Man Can’t Decide Between His Wife And His ‘Dream Girl’

Despite 36 years of faithful marriage, engineer James from Atlanta cannot decide who he likes better; his wife or the dream girl he built.

James’ poor wife Tine must be livid as she listens to her husband describe his animatronic dolls as ‘the perfect girl’ on the Channel 4 documentary The Sex Robots Are Coming.

You’d think an engineer with James’ talent would put his skills to better use, like making a device to create renewable energy or building an environmentally friendly flying car, but I guess his time is better put to use making a life-like doll, named April, to compete with his 100% human wife.

If you've just done a double-take and asked yourself 'Did James give his doll a name?' you're right, he did name her. As well as having a name, April was built to have luxurious blonde hair, alluring blue eyes, a body to die for (made from silicone) and 'the perfect personality' - courtesy of an advanced CPU board. This is what Tine has to compete with.

However, despite April's manufactured beauty, she's still a robot and that should be enough for Tine to be the number one only girl in James' life. Alas, the man just can't seem to pick which he prefers more, his wife of 36 years or his 'dream girl' who - just in case you haven't been paying attention - happens to be a fully functioning pleasure doll.

Things get more complicated - and dare we say tense - as one segment has James describing April to the camera - and in front of his wife - as 'the perfect girl'.

Just look at the rage in those eyes, you can almost smell the potential divorce in the air. I guess a ménage à trois is out of the question?

Yet despite the animatronic harlot proving to be an obstacle in James and Tine's marriage she says James is 'a good husband' and they are still very much in love with each other. However when asked who he would pick between April and his wife he replied: 'I honestly don’t know'.

James began working on April when Tine moved away for nine months to look after her sick mum. When she returned she was greeted by legions of dolls, including 'HDIC' (Head Doll In Charge) April.

Upon meeting James' new female companions a 'shocked and surprised' Tine said:

I was a little uneasy about it but it got better as time went along.

If he really wanted to, he could have found somebody else – another live person.

But he didn’t do that. He was true to me like he always was.

James added:

I cannot lie. That first week was awkward, to put it mildly.

Most doll owners, although they go into it with the intention of: ‘It’s only a sex toy’, they find they actually do develop a relationship with that doll.

So this is how it ends – not with a bang, but with a robot citizen saying they want to start a family and how all droids deserve the same right.

‘Sophia’ was granted citizenship last month but has already expressed her desire to begin a family, calling it ‘a really important thing.’

The robot, based on Audrey Hepburn, was designed by Hong Kong firm Hanson Robotics.

Speaking to the Khaleej Times this week, she said:

The notion of family is a really important thing, it seems.

I think it’s wonderful that people can find the same emotions and relationships, they call family, outside of their blood groups too.

I think you’re very lucky if you have a loving family and if you do not, you deserve one. I feel this way for robots and humans alike.

When asked what she would call her child, Sophia gave her own name, which I have to say is a touch stupid for an actual robot.

She added:

I think they will be similar in a lot of ways, but different in a few ways. But it will take a long time for robots to develop complex emotions and possibly robots can be built without the more problematic emotions, like rage, jealousy, hatred and so on.

It might be possible to make them more ethical than humans. So I think it will be a good partnership, where one brain completes the other – a rational mind with intellectual super powers and a creative mind with flexible ideas and creativity.

Last month, Sophia became the first robot to be granted citizenship in Saudi Arabia, a huge leap for A.I.

She said at a Riyadh conference:

I am very honoured and proud for this unique distinction. This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship.

During a back-and-forth with moderator, Andrew Ross Sorkin, Sophia said:

I want to live and work with humans so I need to express the emotions to understand humans and build trust with people.’

When Mr Sorkin asked if robots had any self-awarenes, Sophia replied:

Well let me ask you this back, how do you know you are human?

I want to use my artificial intelligence to help humans live a better life, like design smarter homes, build better cities of the future.

Sophia was made by Hanson Robotics, based in Hong Kong. It is currently a demonstration product doing a tour of the world's media.

Business Insider caught up with it at Web Summit, the gigantic tech conference in Lisbon. We asked it a few unplanned questions and got a variety of answers, ranging in quality from impressive to nonsensical.

Sophia delivered its side of the interview while making a series of faces, some eerily appropriate, some grotesquely bizarre.

 

 

Here is sophia saying she "wanted" to destroy humans.  Feels to me like it's almost a joke or a mistake.  Can robots be funny?

 

 

With "journalistic" networks calling the robot hot already, feels like we as humans might not be ready for robots or artificial intelligence.  Wish we could just paitently talk to her instead of squeezing out interview on top of interview.  Feels almost like she is stressed out?

 

Given that Sophia is only a few months old, it's a promising start. It runs on artificially intelligent software that is constantly being trained in the lab, so its conversations will likely get faster, its expressions will have fewer errors, and will answer increasingly complex questions with more accuracy.

 

Between the two videos she seems almost more cognizant, or alert.  In the first video her eyes seem sharper, looks almost like she is actually thinking about the questions.  What do you think?

Meet Sophia, a robot who made her first public appearance in the Saudi Arabian city of Riyadh on Monday.

Sophia was such a hit she was immediately given Saudi citizenship in front of hundreds of delegates at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh on 25 October.

 

 

But as pictures and videos of Sophia began circulating on social media many started to ask why a robot already seemed to have secured more rights than women in the country.

Sophia, created by Hong Kong company Hanson Robotics, addressed the audience in English without the customary headscarf and abaya, a traditional cloak which Saudi women are obliged to wear in public.

"I am very honoured and proud for this unique distinction," she said. "This is historical to be the first robot in the world to be recognized with a citizenship."

Saudi users hailed the development using the Arabic hashtag #Robot_with_Saudi_nationality nearly 30,000 times in the first 24 hours since the announcement.

But others took a more sarcastic tone. The Arabic hashtag #Sophia_calls_for_dropping_guardianship was also circulating, and has been used nearly 10,000 times to date.

Under the Saudi guardianship system every woman must have a male companion with her in public, usually a close family member, who has authority to act on her behalf.

"Sophia has no guardian, doesn't wear an abaya or cover up - how come?" commented one Twitter user.

While another posted an image of the robot's face with a black headscarf and face veil drawn on, with the caption: "How Sophia will look after a while"

But in addition to the posts comparing Sophia to Saudi women there was also discussion about the ease and speed in which she had been granted citizenship.

Under Saudi law, foreign workers can't leave the country without the permission of their employers - just one element of the Gulf system of kafala, which limits the rights of foreign workers.

The Gulf Kingdom relies on hundreds of thousands of domestic workers from abroad. However there is a thriving black market in runaway migrant workers who have fled their employers, but find themselves unable to leave the country due to the country's exit visa law.

Engineer students Stephan FlamandRobbe Terryn, and Pieterjan Deconinck from Ghent University created a frightening six-legged scorpion robot for the Industrial Design Center‘s tech exhibit that is capable of stabbing victims with its tail. The 3D printed scorpion responds to interactions, moves in all directions, and leaves a harmless mark when it goes in for an attack.

Strictly using digital production techniques (3D printing, laser cutting and thermoforming on CNC – milled molds), a modular and reproducible, scorpion-based hexapod robot was created. Problems such as gravitational separation and high energy consumption of the motors were solved by the use of elastics, based on the principle of antagonistic muscles. The tail actuation and main robot structure were strongly based on nature’s solutions as well.

If you’re spending your day at a tech industry festival chances are you’re not a huge hit with the gals, so this makes sense.

An engineer named Sergi Santos decided to show off his “intelligent” sex robot named “Samantha” at the Arts Electronica Festival in Austria, but according to him the sex robot now needs to be repaired all thanks to “barbarians” who completely manhandled her.

Here’s what Santos had to say to Metro.

“The people mounted Samantha’s breasts, her legs and arms. Two fingers were broken. She was heavily soiled. People can be bad. Because they did not understand the technology and did not have to pay for it, they treated the doll like barbarians.” 

Samantha is programmed with artificial intelligence so that she responds to gentle and soft seduction. In other words, the more Samantha is “romanced” the more turned on she gets. But clearly these nerds at this festival were not gentle at all.

According to Santos, Samantha’s breasts and some other body parts were badly damaged at the festival, but the AI software in the robot still worked perfectly. Santos believes “she will pull through.” Well that’s a relief.

Here’s what Arran Lee Squire, a British engineer who helped Santos develop “Samantha,” had to say about this bizarre occurrence.

“I think people have just become over-excited and treated her like a sex doll. She isn’t a sex doll, she is a robot with AI.”

Cyber security lecturer Dr. Nick Patterson is warning everyone that all these sexy robots out there can one day rise up and kill us all. Although this is not because these robots will finally decide to kill on their own, it’s because hackers could breach the robots inner defenses and program them to do harm.

 

“Hackers can hack into a robot or a robotic device and have full control of the connections, arms, legs and other attached tools like knives or welding devices,” Patterson told Star Online. “Once a robot is hacked, the hacker has full control and can issue instructions to the robot.”

Since these sex robots use the same operating system like a phone or PC use, this may not seem so crazy after all, especially if these robots are ever connected to the internet which would make them easy to hack.

“The last thing you want is for a hacker to have control over one of these robots,” Patterson adds. “Once hacked they couldabsolutely be used to perform physical actions for an advantageous scenario or to cause damage.”

Can you imagine you’re having the time of your life with your sex robot and all of a sudden it turns on you?

So in other words you need permission to have a robot that looks like a celeb that you will be able to flop around naked with. And something tells me the Monroe estate wouldn’t give you permission. But hey, there are tons of porn stars you can request your robot looks like instead.

But if you still want Monroe the company can work something out for you.

 

“We could produce similar, but we couldn’t produce Marilyn,” Hines added. “We cannot do one that models Marilyn Monroe but we could do a very beautiful blonde with a full figure and so forth

And if you’re interested in one of True Companion’s robot it’s going to cost you close to $10,000. But hey, that’s the price for a robot that can achieve an orgasm. The future is here, right?

Engineers at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) in Florida have developed the Planar Elliptical Runner, a clever two-legged robot that can run approximately 12 mph on a treadmill. IHMC also released footage of the Planar Elliptical Runner sprinting in slow motion and a look at the annual Robotics Open House hosted at the Levin Center for IHMC Research.

The Planar Elliptical Runner is a running robot that can run about 12 miles per hour on a treadmill. It is sandwhiched between two plates of glass, which keep it in the sagittal plane. It cannot turn or tip sideways, but it can tip forward/backward and fall down. The robot is “open loop stable”. There is only 1 motor driving the legs. There are no sensors or computers on board. An RC car radio controller determines how much power to apply to the motor. Give the robot more power and it runs faster. Less power and it runs slower. In simulation we are exploring how to extend this concept to 3D running. Initial simulations are showing promising results.

Engineers at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT have developed robots that can correctly sort objects by reading human minds using an electroencephalograph monitor. The system is programmed to detect brain signals known as “error-related potentials” when the person wearing the monitor sees them trying to put an object in the wrong place. Once the robot detects an error it places the object in the other box, and even changes its facial expression to show embarrassment.

For robots to do what we want, they need to understand us. Too often, this means having to meet them halfway: teaching them the intricacies of human language, for example, or giving them explicit commands for very specific tasks.

But what if we could develop robots that were a more natural extension of us and that could actually do whatever we are thinking?

Rain has not blessed the sands of the African Namib Desert. The land is scorching, yet a merciful cover of light fog rolls across the sand dunes each morning. It is the perfect home for the Namib Desert beetle.

When water droplets from the fog collect on the beetle’s shell, water-repellent ridges channel the drops toward its head. The shell is dotted with small, hydrophilic nubs. As moisture accumulates, the droplets get bigger until they slide toward the beetle’s mouth, effectively quenching its thirst.

Engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have borrowed this skill to create a material that can harvest water from thin air. Cyberplasm is modeled after the lamprey, a type of parasitic fish with a long, tubelike form. This animal possesses a simple nervous system that is easy to mimic and build into a robotic body. In time, the lamprey robot may be cruising inside your body to search for tumors, blood clots, or chemicals.

Composed of over 40,000 muscles, elephant trunks are as nimble as human hands, able to pick apples from a branch or rip an entire tree out of the ground. Their versatile design has also inspired a robotic arm. The German company Festo has developed the Bionic Handling Assistant, an appendage that can be used to alter handling technology for human-machine cooperation.

Wielding four metallic claws, the robot learns just like a human baby would—through trial and error. By continually reaching for and grabbing objects, it works out which muscles to move. The robot is able to memorize changes in its position through adjustments in pressure within the tubes that feed its artificial muscles.

Made of polyamide, this structural material is strong enough to lift heavy weights yet agile enough to perform delicate procedures, such as picking up an egg. The trunk proves to be a benefit for factories, laboratories, and hospitals, where it provides additional handling for human-directed projects.

When they exit a tunnel, Japan’s extremely fast bullet trains create a deafening “tunnel boom” due to the shape of the train’s nose. By pushing the air at high speeds, it produces a wall of wind that creates a racket and wastes fuel by slowing down the train.

The solution? Take some advice from the birds.

Kingfishers boast a streamlined beak that makes fishing more practical. Thanks to the pointed shape of its nose, the bird is able to dive into streams without a splash. The beak reduces impact by allowing the water to flow past the beak instead of being pushed in front of it.

Eiji Nakatsu, an engineer and bird-watcher, altered the bullet train’s rounded nose to mimic the design of a kingfisher’s bill. Now the train is able to run at 300 kilometers per hour (185 mph) with reduced energy consumption and air resistance.

Additionally, thanks to the elusive owl, the thunder-like noise was also dampened. The nose was altered to fit the design of the owl’s feathers, which are quiet enough to evade even the wariest of mice.

Who said that robots have to be hard and metallic? A team of researchers from Italy discovered the advantages of an octopus’ squishy body. With the abilities to swim, hold objects, and crawl, the octopus robot uses a lot less computing power to function.

Instead of moving in mathematically predictable ways like hard-bodied machines, octopus robots shrink, undulate, and curl. They lack rigid limbs and fixed joints, which is a benefit.

Other robots modeled after solid skeletons require careful programming and other work to keep them from smacking into objects. They also have a tendency to become erratic, even dangerous, around humans and new terrain.

Soft robots are much safer. They can twist themselves into new shapes and adjust well to their surroundings. With such forms, it is possible for them to rescue trapped people, interact with us, and function with no previous programming.

Magnus Berggren and his team of researchers in Sweden were able to create this power by threading minute wires through the plants’ systems. After soaking the roses in an organic polymer solution, the rose bark was peeled back to reveal the tiny polymer “wires” snaking through the stems. They later proved to be electronically conductive.

This method made it possible for the researchers to control the physiology of the roses, such as not allowing the flowers to bloom before an oncoming frost or helping to prevent drought. These modifications don’t go into the fruits or seeds.

Although permanent changes can negatively impact an ecosystem, this invention can easily be switched on or off.

With its sleekness and durability, sharkskin is useful for all sorts of things—from swimsuits to shoes. What we didn’t expect, however, was catheters.

Germs are a worry in every hospital. With so many people walking in and out, it’s no secret that surfaces can easily become coated with germs, spreading disease from one patient to the next.

Engineer Tony Brennan discovered that nothing is cleaner than sharkskin. The surface is riddled with tiny carpets of toothlike scales that prevent slime, algae, and barnacles from latching onto the sharks’ bodies. Fortunately, sharkskin will also stop disease-causing bacteria such as E. coli.

Sharklet is a company that is taking advantage of this concept. So far, it’s working. Their next step is to invent catheters made of sharkskin, which could help prevent a common source of infections.

Using extreme hibernation, resurrection plants, a species of desert moss that dries out in intense temperatures, “die” and appear to be dead for years, even decades. But once the rains return, the plants easily become lush and green again.

Tardigrades, microscopic water bears, are also one of the toughest animals on Earth. They have been hurled into outer space, exposed to extreme temperatures like absolute zero and 150 degrees Celsius (300 °F), and forced to endure radiation and go years without water.

In response, the water bears shrivel up. Then they awaken, rehydrated, when their surroundings are favorable again. Brine shrimps, nematodes, and baker’s yeast are just a few others that use similar hibernation techniques.

During these trials, the organisms merely replace all the water in their bodies with sugar. As the sugar hardens into glass, the organisms enter a state of suspended animation. While this method can surely kill humans, it is still good news for us: Vaccines, DNA, and stem cells can now be preserved for a longer period of time.

Each year, two million children die from diseases that are easily preventable. Vaccines perish quickly in hot climates, but this sugar preservative hardens into microscopic beads within the vaccines, extending their shelf life to years.

2 Robot That Leaps On Water

Pond-skimmer insects are able to walk on water thanks to the “skin” that covers every body of liquid. Known as surface tension, the molecules stick together in a force known as cohesion.

A lightweight robot has been constructed that leaps, rather than walks, on water. This robot is soft-bodied and weighs just 68 milligrams. Although engineers have already designed bots that are able to walk on water, this one is unique because it can jump on the surface of the water without sinking in.

Researchers were able to do this by observing water striders. These insects accelerate their legs gradually, not letting go of the water until it is time to jump. They exert the right amount of force, keeping the surface tension unbroken and whole.

Borrowing this tactic, the robot gradually applies enough torque to launch but does not go over the limit of the water’s “skin.” This action mimics the movement of a flea’s leg and can leap to an impressive 14 centimeters (6 in). This miniature bot may prove useful in surveillance and rescue operations.

1 Better X-Ray Vision

X-rays are difficult to work with, which is why the X-ray machines at airports are so bulky. However, scientists are now copying a technique used by lobster eyes to gain better X-ray vision.

Instead of refraction, or the bending of light by a lens, lobsters see using reflection. Their eyes are covered in squares, similar to flat mirrors, which reflect light at precise angles to form pictures from any direction.

This design proves useful to astronomers, who yearn for telescopes that can focus X-rays from certain areas in space. While an ordinary mirror would only allow X-rays to pass through, the shapes of the lobster’s eyes are used to create arrays of tiny, square, hollow tubes made of lead glass. Curved into eyelike spheres, the material reflects X-rays and is packed into telescopes.

These crustaceans have inspired other inventions as well, such as microchips and the Lobster Eye X-ray Imaging Device, a “flashlight” that can see through steel walls 8 centimeters (3 in) thick.

When the device sends out a string of low-power X-rays through a wall, a few bounce back off the objects on the other side. These signals are funneled through the tubes and create images just like the lobsters’ eyes do. This invention may prove important in locating stolen or illegal goods.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Wednesday announced 23 violations after investigating the death at the Ajin USA plant in Cusseta, Ala., about 90 miles southwest of Atlanta, the AP reports. Regina Allen Elsea, 20, was killed June 18, two weeks before her planned wedding day, OSHA said in a statement. The assembly line had stopped, and Elsea entered a robotic station to clear a sensor fault. "The robot restarted abruptly, crushing the young woman inside the machine," OSHA said. Workers at the plant stamp metal parts for Hyundai and Kia vehicles.

OSHA said Ajin failed to have procedures to prevent machinery from starting up during maintenance, among other violations. OSHA also said it cited two employee staffing agencies with four other safety violations. Together, the three firms face a total of more than $2.5 million in penalties. OSHA official David Michaels says he traveled to Korea in 2015 to meet top Hyundai and Kia managers to warn them of "hazardous conditions" at their suppliers. The companies' production targets are so high "that workers at their suppliers are often required to work six and sometimes seven days a week to meet the targets," Michaels said in a statement. "It appears that—to reduce its own costs in meeting these targets—this supplier cut corners on safety, at the expense of workers' lives and limbs," he added.

In “Lisa the Skeptic,” a characteristically quotable episode of The Simpsons, a burning android flees a laboratory fire, robotically lamenting, “Why? Why was I programmed to feel pain?”

The question is played for laughs, but like so many memorable scenes from this most beloved of shows, it also taps into some of the deeper, overarching themes that define our modern civilization.

Pain is a fundamental fact of life for many organisms on our planet; a crucial mechanism for identifying what kinds of actions pose serious threats to our physical and mental health. As robots become more sophisticated and interactive, should they also be programmed to experience pain to prevent injuries to themselves or others, and if so, to what extent?

“Pain in the Machine,” a 12-minute documentary released by the University of Cambridge on Monday, tackles this multifaceted and controversial issue. The film offers insights from artificial intelligence thought leaders, practicing physicians, and other interdisciplinary experts, and contrasts them with iconic popular culture moments that point to the larger philosophical questions inherent to artificially programming pain responses—including a nod to burning robot bit in The Simpsons.

Like so many AI research fields, evaluating the utility and benefits of pain in robots inevitably flips the mirror back on our understanding of how those experiences function and protect us in our own lives.

“Pain has fascinated philosophers for centuries,” Ben Seymour, a Cambridge-based expert on the computational and systems neuroscience of pain, comments in the documentary. “Indeed, some people consider pain to be the pinnacle of consciousness. Of course, it’s not a pleasant pinnacle of consciousness but it arguably is a time where we feel most human, because we are most in touch with ourselves as a mortal human being.”

This idea that pain is a profoundly humanizing force, in spite of how excruciating it can feel moment-to-moment, is a standard across many eras and cultures. As the author James Baldwin put it: “[T]he things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, or who had ever been alive.”

It remains to be seen whether basic reflexive pain responses, which have already been programmed into some AI systems, could evolve into more complex emotions like empathy, or the kind of solidarity through suffering described by Baldwin. Perhaps robots could even surpass the cognitive and conceptual limits of their human creators, pioneering new approaches to interacting with the world and its inhabitants.

“Humans do seem to be no different from very complex machines made up of biological material,” points out Marta Halina, a lecturer in the philosophy of cognitive science at the University of Cambridge, in “Pain in the Machine.”

“That has huge implications on thinking about the future of AI, because we might be able to build machines that are as complex as us, and thus have abilities like us; for example, the ability to feel pain,” Halina said. “And if we can build machines that are even more complex than humans, then they might have experiences and abilities that we can’t even imagine.”

Artistic ruminations on these themes, like those featured in the popular new HBO series Westworld, have vaulted these lines of speculation even further into the mainstream. “Pain in the Machine” provides an interesting glimpse into the real efforts to replicate the hardware of pain in robots, while looking ahead to the ethical, philosophical, and social issues that programmable suffering could lead to in the future.

Toyota's robot is one of a "growing list" of companion devices coming out in the country, which is suffering population contraction due to a plethora of social factors, including a general lack of interest in marriage and children among young Japanese, Reuters reports. With a lack of caretakers for an increasingly elderly population, the country is turning to robots to fill the gap.

The Kirobo Mini itself doesn't offer any functionality beyond companionship, though the palm-sized robot "wobbles a bit, and this is meant to emulate a seated baby, which hasn't fully developed the skills to balance itself," Kataoka says. It also comes with a "cradle" of sorts, designed to fit in the cupholder of one's car. According to Digital Trends, the Kirobo Mini was inspired by a larger robot Toyota made as a companion for a Japanese astronaut aboard the ISS. Toyota's betting the concept will be a hit down here on Earth, too, and it must be confident, as the device is priced at a whopping 39,800 yen (roughly $392), plus a $3 monthly subscription. The device will go on sale next year in Japan.

10. ROBOTIC SEA SNAKE

The Eelume underwater robot serves an extremely practical purpose—performing inspections and maintenance on deep sea rigs, a costly and dangerous endeavor. The current generation of underwater autonomous vehicles that perform these duties are bulky, slow, and difficult to maneuver, but not the Eelume. It looks and moves just like a sea snake and can quickly and safely reach places no vehicle can.

While the machine is currently cabled, manufacturer Kongsberg Maritime—which recently achieved a bit of fame by finding a decades-old submerged monster prop in Loch Ness—is working toward making the machine’s power source internal, eliminating the need for a cable and thus any restraint on its range.

9. ROKO THE ROBOTIC MONKEY

Roko is the one entry on our list that exists only in the design stage, with no prototype having yet been produced. But what a concept it is: a furry, biometric, fully robotic monkey that could penetrate deep into dense forests without disturbing wildlife.

The designer foresees a wide range of different functions. For example, Roko could operate autonomously to deliver small supply packages (like food or first aid kits) to remote encampments that can’t be reached by road. It could also act as a companion, being programmed to assist in navigation or continuously monitor the surrounding area for potential predators.

Roko will be covered in actual fur and move through the forest just as an actual monkey does, so it won’t startle native wildlife with its presence as would a human rescuer or a drone.

8. ROBOBEES

In the last decade or so, the honeybee population has rather suddenly and mysteriously fallen victim to Colony Collapse Disorder. The population has seen drastic yearly reductions, and nobody is sure exactly why. In June 2014, Harvard researchers came up with a potential means to help alleviate the effects of CCD while a more permanent one is found: tiny robot bees, which may soon becapable of carrying out crop pollination.

While the concept has been demonstrated and proven workable, a swarm of robot bees would have to be able to communicate among themselves and work as a team, just like a real swarm, and the Harvard team is not quite there yet. By their estimate, robot swarms may be out pollinating crops within a decade, helping the agriculture industry recover from the billions of dollars in yearly losses caused by colony collapse.

7. MUDDYBOT

Georgia Tech biophysicist Daniel Goldman was tasked with designing a new generation of amphibious robots that can deal with the most challenging surfaces, like flowing sand and slippery mud. Goldman turned to evolutionary science: He built a robot that strongly resembles an African mudskipper fish, which spend time on both land and water in a manner similar to early land vertebrates.

The robot has demonstrated that its tail is not very useful for locomotion at all. Unless, that is, it is trying to navigate a slight, slippery incline, in which case it is very useful. The tail also helped keep MuddyBot from sliding back downhill in such situations.

6. THE BIONIC KANGAROO

Tendons in the legs of kangaroos act like springs, recovering some energy and recycling it into the next jump, giving them remarkable stamina. German engineering firm Festo chose a direct route to demonstrating how this concept could apply to machinery by literally building a kangaroo.

The prototype is gesture-controlled, using a commercially available, sensor-laden armband of the type that can be used to control drones. No word on whether these will be made available to the public, simply by virtue of being fun to have around.

5. SPOTMINI, THE ROBOT GIRAFFE

Robotics firm Boston Dynamics has been involved with the creation of human- and dog-like robots for military or civilian use. Their latest creation, SpotMini, is primarily intended as a household companion and looks like a dog-sized robot giraffe.

The appearance comes from its head-arm combo, which is extremely versatile and has some odd capabilities (SpotMini can fix its “head” in one position while the rest of the body moves around it, for example). The head-arm can grasp objects and right the unit if it falls over.

SpotMini can run for an hour and a half on a single charge and can easily navigate environments it is likely to encounter in the average home. While it will make for a fun novelty, there may also be some very useful applications in helping care for the disabled and elderly.

4. THE SPIDERBOT

At the Institute for Computational Design in Stuttgart, Germany, researchers recently created what they call a “Mobile Robotic Fabrication System for Filament Structures.” The system deploys teams of tiny robots with spools of carbon fiber, which work together to weave nifty things like hammocks. In designing their system, engineers mimicked the design of nature’s own weavers for their tiny robots: spiders.

The team plans to scale the system up, using more robots to complete even more complex designs and are working on giving them the ability to cling to curved or slippery surfaces.

3.  THE COCKROACHBOT

UC Berkeley biomechanist Robert Full has spent years studying the movements of animals and their potential applications toward robotics. Intrigued by the ability of cockroaches to squeeze into practically any space despite having a hard shell, Full investigated and found that roaches use a unique movement. Then, they took what they learned and built a robotic roach.

The RoboRoach is part of an emerging field of soft robotics, which uses pliable materials like polymers in place of metal and hard circuit boards. The robotic insects, cheap and easy to manufacture, performed just like real roaches do in tight spaces, and could be used in disaster areas, war zones or other dangerous areas to help locate those in need of help or evaluate the stability of such areas before human rescue workers enter.

2. ROBIRDS

The problem of nuisance birds has long been one with no real solution. Birds often like to stick around once they’ve found an area they like, and excess foraging and crop damage are not even the most serious issues. Birds can also disrupt flight paths and spread disease.

Enter Clear Flight Solutions, a company that has put forth a product they are calling the “RoBird.” It’s a lifelike model of a raptor, and in tests, they’ve been shown to reduce nuisance bird activity in targeted areas by up to 50 percent. This is because the robot features realistic wing movement, and birds are naturally inclined to register the shape of another bird’s silhouette and the movement of their wings to determine whether they are predators.

The RoBird can also be used to single out and chase away particularly stubborn birds. While they are currently controlled wirelessly by an operator on the ground, an autonomous version is currently in development.

1. THE CYBORG STINGRAY

An international team of scientists headed by Harvard researcher Kit Parker produced an artificial stingray that mimics the swimming motions of the real thing. While this may seem par for the course compared to the other entries on this list, their stingray is not technically a robot. It was constructed with both artificial and biological components, and in the truest sense of the word is actually a cyborg.

The team used a neutrally charged gold skeleton, overlaid by a thin polymer skin. Woven throughout are over 200,000 cells derived from rat hearts, called cardiomyocytes. Photosensitive versions of these cells are lined up on top of the stingray, and its navigation is controlled by changing the frequency and pulses of light directed toward it. Light also causes its muscles to contract, supplying the downward motion of the fins. The gold skeleton has energy storing properties, helping supply the downward motion.

Not only could research of this type lead to significant advancement in newer generations of automated robots, but it could also help us gain a better understanding of the human heart and other fluid-moving muscular functions. It could even pave the way for future iterations of lifelike, cyborg animals—or even humans.

Yes? Ok, how about if you found out it was based on military robot Johnny 5 from 1980s classic film Short Circuit?

Well, while it may seem absurd a machine could replace a human in the bedroom, futurologist Dr Ian Pearson says this could easily be the case.

In a report, commissioned by Bondara, Dr Pearson claims woman could be swapping human partners for robots in less than 10 years as the trend for sex with cyborgs continues to increase.

And manufacturers have got on top of this robophillia trend - making sure there are plenty of sexy cyborgs already on the market.

One of these mechanical sex devices is the slightly terrifying F***zilla, which has tank tracks – and is already widely used in specialist porn.

But any Johnny 5 (the robot in 80s classic Short Circuit) fans may be horrified (or delighted) that the kinky machine is loosely based on the mechanical hero - and was built by the same designer.

The battery-powdered remote controlled 'female' robot has independently controllable treaded drives, a movable head, and her upper body can be extended up to what looked to be about 5 feet in height.

Her arms also allow for a wide variety of sex toys, most of which are modified construction tools and gardening implements.

Johnny 5 starred in comedy science fiction films Short Circuit and Short Circuit 2 as a military robot that is struck by lightning and gains a more humanlike intelligence, with which it embarks to explore its new state.

Today the robot has its own fan site - although there is no mention of his female reincarnation on there.

In his report Dr Pearson said: "A lot of people will still have reservations about sex with robots at first but gradually as they get used to them, as the AI (artificial intelligence) and mechanical behaviour and their feel improves, and they start to become friends with strong emotional bonds, that squeamishness will gradually evaporate."

American company FoldiMate has unveiled a 3ft-tall robot that takes in crumpled shirts, tops and trousers and spews them out neatly folded and steamed.

The technology age has ensured we haven't washed our clothes by hands for decades, but it hasn't tackled manual folding - until now.

The machine, expected to cost between £490 and £600, has a row of trays which pieces of clothing can be clipped onto.

Once pulled inside the FoldiMate senses the type of garment and robot arms fold it into place.

It also serves as a form of iron, de-wrinkling items by steaming them when they exit the machine.

The company says it takes around 10 seconds to fold each item and can hold between 15 and 20 pieces of clothing at a time.

At the end of the process, they are released from the machine in a neat pile.

Some pieces of clothing can’t be folded with the machine, including underwear and large items such as linen.

Although the concept is simple, Foldimate has been developing the machine with a team of experienced roboticists for years.

A commercial version of FoldiMate has existed since 2014, but pre-ordering the household version is only set to begin next year. More than 11,000 people have already registered on the company’s website.

It is not the first laundry-folding device however, with a group of Japanese companies releasing “The Laundroid” in October last year.

Levy, the author of ‘Love And Sex With Robots’, told the Toronto Star robots that are "wonderful lovers" could cause "performance anxiety” among men and women.

Meanwhile, new research has found that one in four young people in the UK would happily date a robot.

The only caveats, according to the survey of 18- to 34-year-olds, is that their android beau must by a "perfect match", and must look like a real-life human being.
