The Red Shamrock: NFC Playoff Speculation And Week 14 NFL Picks

The Red Shamrock is 8-85-9 (.534)

Four games left in the NFL regular season and it’s time for some speculation to that will be proven wrong, in this case, for the NFC. In case you forgot how the playoff system in the NFL works, here’s the video from last week.

The Red Shamrock knows that everyone was not paying attention last week

Time to look at the NFC division leaders and determine who is going to be the top two seeds and who will be playing on Wild Card Weekend (playoffs start January 7th, 2017). Let’s list the division leaders, any teams that could steal the division lead, and denote the games back the chasing team is. For example, Dallas is the NFC West division leader and the New York Giants -3 (three games back).

NFC East: Dallas Cowboys (11-1), New York Giants -4, Washington Redskins -5
Dallas has locked up their division and is the only NFC team that has locked in a spot in the playoffs. Their path to the one seed in the NFC looks pretty secure while the Giants and Redskins are holding on to Wild Card hopes.

Dallas Cowboys (11-1) Remaining Four Game Schedule
@ Giants
vs Buccaneers
vs Lions
@ Eagles

I think most would agree that the Cowboys are going at least 2-2 down the stretch, if not 3-1. Dallas opened the season with a narrow loss to the Giants in Jerry World, but that was weeks ago and Dallas has been winning ever since while the Giants just snapped a six game win streak. I feel 3-1 is safe for them, but hypothetically, they could slip up against the Giants and Buccaneers (not likely at home). Yep, I’m sticking to 3-1 down the stretch with a 14-2 record and the one seed.

gtm9pcy

No way the Cowboys would of dropped that opener against the Giants if this guy was under center.

New York Giants (8-4) Remaining Four Game Schedule
vs Cowboys
vs Lions
@ Eagles
@ Redskins

Man, the schedule makers did the Giants no favors. Destroyed in Pittsburgh (and not covering the spread, so insert I told you so comment from Drawman here). Losses at the Cowboys and Lions are real possibilities as is a loss at Washington (Redskins defeated the Giants in September at Met Life 29 – 27). I can easily see the Giants going 1-3 down the stretch to finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs.

a7h695m

Nope. Not making the playoffs this year!

Washington Redskins (6-5-1) Remaining Four Game Schedule
@ Eagles
vs Panthers
@ Bears
vs Giants

vzeei7vThe Red Shamrock thinks the schedule favors a Redskins Wild Card berth.

It certainly looks like everything is lining up Washington’s way. The Eagles and Panthers are reeling and the Bears hope to finish 5-11 (hey, at least they aren’t Cleveland). Two winnable road games and two winnable home games and I know I’ll get killed for saying this, but I can see them going 4-0 down the stretch to finish 10-5-1 and grab a Wild Card. I can feel your anger…good!

NFC West Seattle Seahawks (8-3-1)
Yeah, this division race is over and if the playoffs started today, Seattle would be the two seed.

jjvyhpzThere will be none of that this year @ Green Bay

Seattle Seahawks (8-3-1) Remaining Four Game Schedule
@ Packers
vs Rams
vs Cardinals
vs 49ers

You seeing what I’m seeing? Maybe a loss at Green Bay. Let’s give them 3-1 to finish 11-4-1 and a firm lock on the two seed. So many teams with ties this year…its maddening.

NFC North Detroit Lions (8-4), Minnesota Vikings (-2), Green Bay Packers (-2)
This will be the one that all the analysts will be watching and rooting for a Green Bay steal.

Detroit Lions (8-4) Remaining Four Game Schedule
vs Bears
@ New York Giants
@ Cowboys
vs Packers

Not the easiest stretch of games. Let’s give them a win hosting Chicago. I’m giving them a win a New York as well. Do they beat Dallas at home? Probably not. They did beat the Packers in Green Bay back in September 34 – 27. There is a real possibility they sweep them this year, so 3-1 is not out of the question but 2-2 is possibility so they can finish either 11-5 or 10-6. Hold this thought for the conclusion at the bottom

dtkbq The Red Shamrock thinks the Lions can pull out the NFC North for those too lazy to read any further.

Minnesota Vikings (6-6) Remaining Four Game Schedule
@ Jaguars
vs Colts
@ Packers
vs Bears

Let’s give the Vikes wins over the Jags and Bears. The Colts are on a mission and will be a difficult out at home and the Vikings did defend home field back in September with a 17-14 win over the Packers. But do you trust Sam Bradford in December in Green Bay with the Packers fighting for their life? Neither do I. 2-2 down the stretch to finish 8-8.

onr0j So the Vikes miss #28, right?

Green Bay Packers (6-6) Remaining Four Game Schedule
vs Seahawks
@ Bears
vs Vikings
@ Lions

My gut is telling me that Seattle won’t win in Green Bay this week. Since 2012, the Seahawks and Packers have met four times (once in the NFC Championship Game). Three of the games have been in Seattle where the Pack have lost and the lone win was last year at Lambeau. Fawk. 3-1 or 2-2 which are real possibilities. I have to think Detroit gets it done at home against the Packers. I’ll give them 2-2 to finish 8-8 and the Lions 3-1 to finish 11-5 and win the division.

mch0o18

Rodgers just found out that the Red Shamrock does not thing Green Bay will make the playoffs.

NFC Atlanta Falcons (7-5), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (behind on tiebreaker), New Orleans Saints -2
Another race to the finish. The Bucs have won four in a row while Atlanta coughed one up against Kansas City.

Atlanta Falcons (7-5) Remaining Four Game Schedule
@ Rams
vs 49ers
@ Panthers
vs Saints

Could things be lined up more for Atlanta? 4-0, maybe 3-1 if they fall in Carolina. Its there division to lose; let’s go 3-1 and finish 10-6.

u9zb2uv

The Falcons may win the division, but are they built for the playoffs?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-5) Remaining Four Game Schedule
vs Saints
@ Cowboys
@ Saints
vs Panthers

Not going to be easy for the Buccaneers to get it done. We will be generous and say they defend home field against the Saints and Panthers. They would still have to win in New Orleans and Dallas. 2-2 to finish 9-7 and we will give them that second Wild Card.

k40ibec
Jameis Winston has been pretty impressive in his second season and the Red Shamrock would not be surprised if the Bucs lock up the second Wild Card.

New Orleans Saints (5-7) Remaining Four Game Schedule
@ Buccaneers
@ Cardinals
vs Buccaneers
@ Falcons

Ouch. Three road games at the end of the year. We already have them splitting with Tampa Bay. Maybe a win at Arizona but I think Atlanta holds at home. 3-1 to finish 8-8 and miss the playoffs.

Stats are great, but they don’t help you make the playoffs and when they do this to your team as a whole, it might be time to start restructuring that contract to get some help on your defense.

What have we proven with the playoff speculation? Absolutely nothing. I really am excited for the playoffs because these last two columns will mean shit and we start anew. Enjoy this week’s picks!
