There’s something about the rush of fear one gets when subjecting their minds to cinematic horror that turns morbid curiosity into a sense of being reminded that you’re alive, especially when you’re experiencing something that takes you for a ride down the darkest parallels of your imagination through the eyes of characters being haunted by malevolent spirits, possessed by a demon, or just simply being chased by a serial killer.
It scares the hell out of us, yet we keep coming back for more because it tugs away at our heart strings in all the wrong places. So for those addicted to pulse-pounding moments of terror to get the blood pumping for that instant shock felt between life and death on the big screen, here are the 10 most anticipated horror movies of 2016!
Originally called The Ring 3D, Rings is the latest supernatural psychological horror film in the infamous Japanese horrorRing series about a group of high school students who find themselves caught in a terrifying situation involving the haunted video tape that kills whoever watches it seven days later. It is set for release on April 1st, 2016, and directed by F. Javier Gutierrez, who made his first film debut back in 2008 with the dramatic thriller, Before the Fall.
9. The Purge 3
Writer and director James DeMonaco returns to his social-science fiction action horror series to bring us the third and possibly final installment of The Purge franchise. Set to be released on July of this year, the film will bring back actors Frank Grillo to reprise his role as Sergeant Leo Barnes from The Purge: Anarchy and of course, Edwin Hodge as he comes back for a third time as the notorious Dwayne “The Stranger” in this twisted universe where a new, anarchic US government helps control the human populace, as well as the crime and unemployment rate, by having a one-night-a-year event in which all crime is legal for 12 hours. Despite its mixed reviews, The Purge series has proven its success in the box office time and again with every new telling, and fans everywhere can expect the same results for its latest installment!
8. Underworld: Next Generation
Returning to the big screen of action horror, English actress Kate Beckinsale reprises her role as the beautifully dangerous vampire death dealer, Selene, in the latest installment of the Underworld series entitled Underworld: Next Generation. The series portrays a gothic modern world in which werewolves, vampires, and hybrids collide in a heated conflict that dates back centuries. Scheduled for release on October 14th, 2016 by Screen Gems, this film will also mark the directing debut of Anna Forester, a cinematographer and visual effects artist best known for her work on Alien: Resurrection andIndependence Day.
7. Phantasm: Ravager
In memory of the late Angus Scrimm, the next entry on the list is the fifth and final installment of Don Coscarelli’s cult classic fantasy/horror franchise Phantasm. This film reunites all of its original cast and crew to take on the iconic “Tall Man” in their last confrontation of good versus evil. Now in the post-production stages, Phantasm: Ravager is set to be released late this year instead of its earlier initial release due to the unfortunate passing of its main villain, Angus Scrimm, who put “The Tall Man” on the map of horror history with his towering height, menacing gaze, and strong vocals. Rest assured though that fans of the series everywhere can rejoice when they finally see that infamous little spiked sphere of death drill another hole in some poor dude’s head!
6. Trick ‘r Treat 2
Having been announced since late of 2015, Michael Dougherty, director and writer of the first horror anthology of interwoven Halloween stories, as well as the 2015 Christmas themed horror movie, Krampus, has promised to finish what he started by expanding the universe of this wonderfully funny, yet scary franchise. While no exact release date has been officially confirmed, it is currently in the works behind the scenes of Michael’s more recent project, X-men: Apocalypse, which is now in its post-production stages, and he will be working diligently towards bringing Trick ‘r Treat 2 to life for us to enjoy on Halloween this year!
His films can be hit or miss in the box office, but for fans of horror everywhere, there’s no questioning the stylistic direction of shock rocker Rob Zombie when it comes to bringing terror to the bring screen with unique visuals and downright gruesome storytelling. After writing and directing the remake of John Carpenter’s legendary Halloween as well as its sequel, Rob Zombie returns to the festive spirit of the Halloween tradition once again in his new film, simply titled31, a crowdfunded and independent horror film taking place in the 70s about five carnival workers who are held hostage in a place where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of evil clowns. 31 is set to be released on January 23rd, 2016.
4. A Monster Calls
Based on the 2011 novel of the same name, this live-action adaptation directed by J.A. Bayona, known for his work on the 2007 horror film The Orphanage, will be released on October 14th, 2016, and will star Sigourney Weaver from the Alienseries, and Liam Neeson as The Monster in this film about a young boy, played by Lewis MacDougall, who escapes into a fantasy world of monsters and fairy tales as a way to cope with his mother’s illness and the bullies he deals with at school.
3. Lights Out
From producer James Wan, most famously known for the Insidious franchise and The Conjuring, comes another supernatural horror film called Lights Out. It is directed and written by David F. Sandberg, based on Sandberg’s 2013 short film of the same name about a shadowy evil entity that appears to terrorize a family whenever the lights go out. Starring Australian actress and model Teresa Palmer, who also starred in The Grudge 2, this film is set for release on July 22nd, 2016.
2. Patient Zero
This upcoming fantasy-horror thriller about a pandemic outbreak of a new form of rabies that mutates its victim into a whole new species, simply dubbed “The Infected” will push the remaining human survivors to their absolute limit as they attempt to find an antidote by tracking down the mysterious patient zero. The movie is set for release on September 2nd, 2016, directed by Australian director and screen writer, Stefan Ruzowitzky, who is most notably known for directing and writing the critically acclaimed 2007 drama, The Counterfeiters.
1. The Conjuring 2
Once again, director James Wan returns to the cinematic world of horror, as well as making our “top ten list” twice as our number one most anticipated film of the year, in this sequel to one of the terrifying cases of the infamous demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren and their ghost hunting investigations, The Conjuring. Also known as The Enfield Poltergeist, this supernatural flick brings back the talents of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as the Warrens as they desperately try to ward off one of the darkest spirits they’ve yet to face. The Conjuring 2 is scheduled for release on June 10th, 2016, and if you haven’t seen the trailer yet for this upcoming bad boy, it’s sure to get your blood pumping!
