Roanoke didn’t seem like a mystery after you get more details. They wrote on a nearby tree Croatoan, which was a name of an island south of the settlement. The tribe there had an alliance with the colony, even the leader of the tribe being set in charge of the colony. The only reason it is still considered a mystery is that the returning supply ship never got the chance to go back to the island to see if they were there with the tribe of Croatoans. It was later discovered lots of the same gear the colonist had from the Roanoke colony on the island of Croatoa by archaeologist.
