11 Stories From People Who Were Catfished To Scare You Off Online Dating For Good

If you were born before 1980, a catfish is a fish with whiskers. But for everyone else, the dictionary definition of catfish (yes, it’s in the dictionary) is “a person who sets up a false personal profile on a social networking site for fraudulent or deceptive purposes.” Verb: to catfish.

If you’ve ever dated online, you’ve probably experienced a low level of catfishing—someone lying about their height, or age, or strategically choosing photos that obscure their hideous personality.

Or maybe you’ve experienced the real deal, and found yourself thoroughly duped by someone online claiming to be someone completely different. These 11 people shared their stories of being catfished (or even doing the catfishing!) on Reddit. Yikes.

1. lincunguns:

My ex-girlfriend tried catfishing me to test me. It took me about 30 seconds of looking through the profile before I realized that the name was her name backwards. The craziest thing is that she really thought it would work. That girl was bonkers.

Edit: Eillah

2. Hoggiebearz:

Not me but my older brothers best friend. He had been talking to this girl online for a really long time. He was planning on driving to Texas (we live in north Georgia) to visit her. When he told her that he was going to drive over to see her she confessed that she was actually an overweight 43 year old lady. He was 23 at the time. He doesn’t like to talk about it…

3. Actual_Lady_Killer :

Friend and I frequent dating sites. He was catfished once. Her name was Alexis Mc.Nally. She was the head RN at a hospital a half hour away making $150,000 a year and was in love with my friend. She was going to fly him to Vegas after 3 weeks of knowing him and they were going to get married. He was happy as hell and thinking of pretty much nothing but the money and the hot pictures she was sending him. She said she bought him all this stuff and his kids Ipads and computers and that she had a multimillion dollar house she was going to live in with him. He didn’t think anything was odd but I did so I did some research. First I called the hospital and they said they never heard of her. Then looked up her phone number which the area code was from Ohio. After a while he wised up and started calling her out on stuff. She ended up sending him a box filled with new American Eagle clothes for him and that was pretty much the end of it.
TL;DR friend got catfished, ended up with a box of free clothes.

4. mishmash27:

I started chatting with an army guy who was a peace keeper in DRC. We just started chatting casually, I was 21-22 when we started and he said he was 27.

I really don’t remember what we spoke about. But I developed a huge crush on him. He said he loved me. I said it back. He said that he’d use his break to fly to see me. He represented himself as a 27 year old single guy. And he came across as having very high morals and being an absolute toughie.

I started to almost worship him and I placed him way above me. I one day told him (and short while before he was supposed to fly to see me) about my drunken 21 year party where I told me 2 best guy friends that I loved them.

He got all quiet and became jealous and something changed after that. We couldn’t talk as usual. At this point we had never even spoken to each other. Everything was on chat. One day we were just having a normal conversation and he suddenly threw it in my face that I had gotten drunk… like that was supposed to make me feel bad.

What I didn’t like was that he used a thing like that to try and hurt me, like he was waiting for the chance. Anyway, suddenly he was no longer in touch and I was completely devastated. I couldn’t reach him. I thought he had told me his real name so I kept looking for his name online and found nothing. I tried over and over again and found nothing. I was broken hearted.

Then I finally had brain wave and googled his id and found that he had lied about his name. He was 40 something. He really was a peace keeper. I also found taht he was known to catfish otehr people, he even created fake dating profiles as a woman. Someone posted a comment on one of his profiles revealing his real name and position. I eventually created a fake Facebook profile and added him as a friend. I found out he is divorced and has a young daughter and his statuses show that he’s a total douchebag.

He really was a lieutenant colonel though and has been mentioned in a UN web page. I got over it all real fast.

5. Jamus19 and their Catfish are still friends:

Yes, I have been catfished but not in a romantic sense.

About thirteen years ago, I met a girl named Amber on a Harry Potter board. We became friends and talked every day. She lived in England. As time went on, we became closer and she told me all about her family. She had an older brother, a twin sister, and a younger brother. After about 3 years of knowing her, she ended up telling me she and her sister had found out they were adopted and were actually named Alayna and Anouska. Around age 15, her sister Anouska became pregnant…and had triplets.

I had always had an inkling that the stuff she was telling me wasn’t true, but it didn’t really sink in until she sent me a picture of her and her twin. It was obviously photo shopped. She took it down after I called her out on it. Eventually, she started emailing me from an account that had an odd last name. I asked her about it and she said it was her cousin’s. She sent me a song on iTunes that had the same last name, and I asked her about it. She told me it was a fake name her father used. When Deathly Hallows was released, she sent me a package with the British version, and again that last name was on it.

I’d known this girl since she was about 11. Finally, at age 18, I asked her if she was really Alayna. She told me no, that her name was Emma. She didn’t have a twin or a younger brother, and that when she was little, her parents forbade her from using her real name and that she’d just made up a whole life to escape from her real one.

We are still friends and even though she lied to me for the majority of our friendship, we are still close.

6. Mistress_Auri never got answers:

About 10 years ago I started chatting with a guy in one of the Yahoo chatrooms. We had only been chatting for a few weeks when suddenly he disappeared offline for about 2 weeks. I was so worried but then his “sister” contacted me and told me he’d been in a terrible motorcycle accident. He was in ICU, but “she” kept in touch with me to let me know how he was. After about a month, he got back online and we talked every day. We traded pics and eventually I got on webcam to say hi. He couldn’t do the same because of some issues with his computer. We talked like this for nearly 3 years. It was around this time that I realized his “sister” was actually him. It didn’t matter though. I was besotted with him and I mean totally head over heels. Then one day he just disappeared. His profile was deleted, all his accounts were gone and I have not heard a single word from him since. I still have absolutely no idea who he/she really was and it messed up for a long time. I still think about at times. I would do anything to know the truth.

7. Jux_ learned Catfishing can be a two-way street:

It was when I was a teenager, not too long after the birth of ICQ. I had met this one person in a chat room, and things started to get more and more personal. Not too long later, they eventually broke down and admitted that they had been lying, and that they weren’t a young hot girl but instead a man.

The guy seemed really remorseful, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that I actually wasn’t a young hot lesbian either.

8. ReasonOVERFaith:

I had a friend back in highschool who was, told us this story a week after it happened at a graduation party.

So he had been chatting with this girl from Florida for 3 years. Decides to finally go and visit her for a week after our highschool graduation.

So he takes a plane down and she was going to pick him up at the airport. He arrives and instead is greeted by her mother who says her daughter is waiting for him back at the house. So he gets his bags and heads for the car with her. Notices a guy sitting in the backseat around his age, funny he didnt remember anything about her having a brother. he starts getting a little weirded out at this point.

They finally arrive at the house. No girl in sight. He gets angry and has the “mother” spill the beans. Turns out this lady was using her nieces pictures to talk with him. How he didnt realize sooner I dont know. Maybe they never talked on the phone or maybe her voice sounded young.

Anyways, he immediately left this lady and her son and spent the night at a hotel and had his parents pay for a plane ticket back home the next day.

9. mn88mn:

I talked to this guy, Sean, for months, probably close to a year. Then poof, gone. It sucked but oh well.

Six months later start talking to another guy with the same unusual middle name. He turns out to be Seans ex-boyfriend and about 80% of the stuff I knew about Sean was actually about him. He broke up with Sean six months before and took his phone back and thats why he dissappeared.

TL:DR Met the real-life inspiration for the persona I was catfished with.

10. frustrated_pen “unintentionally” catfished someone:

I was playing league of legends and this guy added me after we played a game. His english was broken, but i didn’t think much of it and we started to duo together. we did really well, but strangely he kept referring to me as a “she”. Again, didn’t think twice about it and I just kept playing with him but eventually he started to get reaaaal creepy and told me all these things about him. we found out that there was a significant time difference between us but he would log on at the most ridiculous times for him jsut to play with him and started to become a “white knight”. Whenver anyone would trash talk me, (pretty normal) he would vehemently defend me and start fights with other team members, opposing players, and whatever.

Shortly after that, he would start saying “goodnight bb” which i thought was bye bye. so I would say “haha goodnight bb” back to him. then he’d send me hearts like “<3” and I thought we were guys being guys so I would jokingly message that heart back to him.

Eventually he started calling me his gf when he was defending me and I realized he full on thought I was a female the entire time. I messaged him after that game and was like “dude I’m a guy” and he went on a raaaaaaaaaaaampage. he started cussing me out and by the end of it, the reason why he thought I was a female, was because of my username and because i used “proper grammar and spelling”. (just because i didn’t use proper grammar here does not mean i suck at it)

11. [Deleted]:

Met someone on OkCupid. He was moving from NYC to my city, said he was a surgeon. That was my first red flag. I wondered why a successful surgeon was on a free dating site.

We chatted for two weeks, but he didn’t want to talk on the phone. Red flag #2. At this point I assume he’s a fake.

He deleted his profile, saying he couldn’t wait to meet me in 3 weeks when he was scheduled to fly in for a weekend to find a condo. I reverse searched his picture and found another profile, same story, but it said he was moving to Phoenix. Red flag #3.

At this point, I know he’s fake but now I’m having fun making him think I’m totally hooked. He gave me bad med advice when I sprained my ankle, then told me he had a foot fetish and he would be making sure I would get daily pedicures when I quit my job and move in with him.

The weekend he was supposed to fly in, his current almost former boss “died” and he couldn’t make it. I sent him screenshots of his other profile and told him I knew all along and had just been fucking with him.

Good times.

In conclusion: never go online again (except to visit and check the weather).

I got catfish by a pimp. Not the girl I thought I was getting when I ordered online. 8/10 would recommend.
