It is almost certain that the astronauts survived the initial Challenger explosion, and died on impact with the water. At least three of the crew’s emergency oxygen tanks were manually switched on after the crew’s capsule broke apart from the rest of the shuttle. (article)

Most people have never actually seen how the crew sits inside the shuttle. Most people think everyone sits on one deck and has view of the windows- it’s not like that. It’s actually 3 decks tall and the crew sits on the upper and mid decks. (Image)

Because of this set up if you’re seated on the mid deck you have no windows and no view. When Challenger broke apart (it did not explode, it broke apart. If you watch the video of the incident you will actually see the crew cabin shoot out of the debris field before falling down. (Image)

Electricity was immediately severed as was communications. Those sitting on the mid deck were immediately sent in to darkness with no ability to communicate and with no idea what was happening. One second they’re riding a rocket and a spit second later they’re in darkness and tumbling.

The free fall before hitting water was 2 minutes and 45 seconds. When the cabin hit the water it did so at 207 miles per hour and the deceleration exceeded 200g. When the bodies were recovered they had been in the water for nearly 10 weeks and were in an almost completely liquified state. Some body parts were later identified and returned to the families. The vast majority of the remains could not be identified and were buried together at the Challenger Memorial in Arlington.

After stepping on her trainer’s head, Mary the Asian elephant (also known as ‘Murderous Mary”) was hanged from a crane until death. It was later discovered that she had an infected tooth, and the unqualified trainer had prodded it, which caused her to react

The details of the aftermath are confused in a maze of sensationalist newspaper stories and folklore. Most accounts indicate that she calmed down afterward and didn’t charge the onlookers, who began chanting, “Kill the elephant! Let’s kill it.” Within minutes, local blacksmith Hench Cox tried to kill Mary, firing five rounds with little effect. Meanwhile, the leaders of several nearby towns threatened not to allow the circus to visit if Mary was included.

The circus owner, Charlie Sparks, reluctantly decided that the only way to quickly resolve the potentially ruinous situation was to kill the elephant in public. On the following day, a foggy and rainy September 13, 1916, Mary was transported by rail to Unicoi County, Tennessee, where a crowd of over 2,500 people (including most of the town’s children) assembled in the Clinchfield Railroad yard.

The story that inspired ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’

In 1968, when she was 17, Anneliese began to suffer from convulsions. She was sent to the Psychiatric Clinic Wurzburg where she was diagnosed with Grand Mal epilepsy. Soon after, Anneliese started experiencing hallucinations while praying. She also began to hear voices, which told her that she was damned.

Over the months that followed her mental state and unstable behaviour deteriorated. She began to eat flies, spiders and coal; she even bit off the head of a dead bird. In one instance, she crawled under a table and barked like a dog for two days. She could often be heard screaming through the walls for hours. Tearing off her clothes and urinating on the floor became a regular occurrence.

In 1975, convinced that she was possessed, her parents gave up on the doctors from the psychiatric clinic. They chose to rely solely on the church for healing. An exorcist from a nearby town examined Anneliese and concluded that she was indeed demonically possessed. After two failed requests, the rite of exorcism was finally granted.

Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt were assigned to carry out “The Great Exorcism” on Anneliese Michel. The foundation for this ritual was the “Rituale Romanum”, which at the time, was still a valid 17th century Cannon Law. Together, the men carried out 67 rites of exorcism over a 10 month period, with one or two exorcism sessions held each week. Some sessions lasted up to four hours.

Over time, the ligaments in her knees ruptured due to the 600 genuflections (the act of reverence consisting of falling onto one or both knees) that she performed obsessively during each exorcism session. On June 30, 1976, during what would be her last rite of exorcism before her death, too weak and emaciated to perform the genuflections on her own, Anneliese’s parents stood and helped carry her through the motions.

She along with Father Arnold Renz and Pastor Ernst Alt were convinced that she had been possessed by several demons, including Lucifer, Judas Iscariot, Nero, Cain, Hitler, and Fleischmann, a disgraced Frankish Priest from the 16th century. These demons frequently spoke through her, conversing regularly with the priests.
