Countless comedies end up being dumber than they are funny — I’m looking at you, Jack and Jill — and sometimes you can’t tell the difference between a stupidly funny movie and a stupidly stupid movie from the trailers alone. But I have watched every stupid comedy released during my lifetime and I don’t want you to miss out on the hidden gems. This is a list of movies you may have not seen because you assumed they would be too idiotic. These movies are certainly dumb, but they are also hilarious, and very worth your viewing time. You’re welcome.

1) Scary Movie 3

While the other Scary Movies aren’t very good (especially Scary Movie 2. Ughhh), Scary Movie 3 is brilliant. It’s hardly even about scary movies, and is instead mostly a mashup of 8 Mile and Signs. It’s hard to choose the best part of this movie — the rap battle; he funeral; Yahtzee!; the cop using tacos and hot dogs to explain to Charlie Sheen what happened to his wife during a car accident; everything Regina Hall says — it’s all gold. On top of all that, Scary Movie 3 was Leslie Nielsen’s last great role. I am so f*cking serious, this movie is legitimately and completely unironically amazing.

2) The House Bunny

My best friend Kate insisted I include The House Bunny on this list. Honestly, I’ve only seen it once and I don’t remember it very well but it’s hard to go wrong with Anna Faris, Emma Stone, and Kat Dennings. Plus, I trust Kate.

3) Dude, Where’s My Car

The scene where they can’t explain to each other what their tattoos say is so perfect. Dude, Where’s My Car? is also largely about aliens!

4) Beerfest

What are ZJs? “If you have to ask, you can’t afford it.” The highlights of this movie are innumerable — Donald Sutherland in a German outfit; when (spoiler alert) one of the main characters dies and is quickly replaced with his twin brother, and then never mentioned again; Das Boot. This movie is incredible.

5) Super Troopers

Luckily, Super Troopers has gotten plenty of attention, and it’s all well deserved. It’s probably too successful a movie to be on this list but I had to include it just in case anyone hasn’t seen it yet. Don’t be that guy.

6) Not Another Teen Movie

Not Another Teen Movie has Chris Evans before he got famous, perfect parodies of She’s All That and 10 Things I Hate About You (and I’m someone who loves those movies), and never goes three minutes without a laugh-out-loud joke. The scene where Chris Evans tries to sing “Janie’s Got a Gun” to a girl as a romantic gesture and instead causes a panic because people think she has a gun is funny beyond belief.

7) MacGruber

Just watch this scene. If you don’t laugh, you’re not the kind of person I’m writing to anyway. Get out of here.

8) Undercover Brother

Mayonnaise jokes and Dave Chappelle as a conspiracy theorist who believes George Washington Carver made the first computer out of a peanut make this movie a motherf*cking gem.

9) The Ladies’ Man

I loved The Ladies’ Man when it came out and am only now realizing that half the jokes went right over my head.

10) Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Jay and Silent Bob find out what the internet is, and then go on a mission to beat up everyone who is using it to talk sh*t about them. Don’t watch this clip in front of your parents.

11) Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

I’ve seen Harold and Kumar Go to White Caste upwards of 50 times. Don’t watch the sequels though, just watch this one four times in a row.

12) Hot Rod

Hot Rod is the movie I watch when I’m sad and nothing else can make me happy. There’s a scene where Andy Samberg falls down a hill for a full minute and nothing else in life can bring me so much joy.

13) The Hot Chick

A before-she-was-famous Rachel McAdams and Rob Schneider switch places. I can’t explain why The Hot Chick isn’t terrible — it has every reason to be — but it’s funny! Don’t take my word for it!

14) Wet Hot American Summer

Watch Wet Hot American Summer and then watch the entire Netflix series, which was filmed 15 years after the movie and yet takes place 6 weeks earlier. It’s a gag that never gets old. Like Super TroopersWet Hot American Summer has achieved significant cult status so if you don’t like it, you’re the stupid one.

15) She’s The Man

She’s the Man features Channing Tatum before he was famous and Amanda Bynes before she was weird! Amanda, watch this movie. See how hilarious and talented you are and come back to us.
