15 Remakes You Didn’t Know Were Coming In 2018

15 Remakes You Didn’t Know Were Coming In 2018

Why would Hollywood want original ideas when they can recreate the same film over and over again?

Numerous remakes are currently in the works, and some actually look promising, while (most) others look like the easy cash grabs that they are. But there’s something so entertaining when it comes to talking about some of the more interesting and surprising films that will be coming out soon to a theater near you. Some may have been expected, but maybe not so soon!

Below are 15 films that will all be coming out in 2018, which may surprise you. Most seem on solid ground but a few are on shaky legs and may surprise us all by not coming out in 2018.

Disney continues to roll out its line of live-action films (and why not, when films like Beauty and the Beast have been doing so well at the box office). Universal Studios continues its attempts to further their monster movie universe with remakes of their classic films. There will even be a Dr. Seuss classic starring a strange doctor with an even stranger name. Then there are other film classics that have escaped the remake machine until now (and some that are being remade for the fourth time).

Given Disney’s success with Beauty and the Beast (2016), Cinderella (2015), and some of their other live-action re-tellings, it’s the perfect time to remake the classic Disney film Mulan (1998).

In the movie, a young woman pretends to be a man in order to take her father’s place as a warrior in the army. Despite the film having several classic Disney songs like “Reflection” and “I’ll Make a Man Out of You”, it is still up in the air whether or not this new Mulan will be a musical or not. The remake’s director, Niki Caro, has said the following: “The live-action is based on that inspirational Chinese ballad and on the animated Disney classic. We’re still exploring the role that music’s going to play in it, but for sure there will be music.”

Niki Caro (The Zookeeper’s WifeMcFarlane, USA) is working with four screenwriters: Lauren Hynek, Rick Jaffa, Elizabeth Martin, and Amanda Silver. These female filmmakers have emphasized that they want the film to be empowering for women.

We’ll see just how empowering (and musical) the film is when it comes out on November 2nd, 2018, just months after the original Mulan celebrates its 20th anniversary.

UPDATE: News out of D23 has announced Mulan will be delayed until 2019.

A video game series about an archaeologist who hunts for ancient relics, there have been two previous Tomb Raider films in the early 2000s that starred Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. The new film stars Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina).

Directed by Roar Uthaug (The Wave) and written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet (who is currently working on the new Dungeons & Dragons film), Tomb Raider follows a 21-year-old Lara Croft as she explores an island off the coast of Japan where her father disappeared seven years ago. Other members of the cast include Hannah John-Kamen(Killjoys) as Sophia, Walton Goggins (Django Unchained) as Mathias Vogel, and Dominic West (The Wire) as Lara’s father, Lord Richard Croft.

In response to GQ commenting that video game movies have a tendency to disappoint fans, Uthaug said that Tomb Raider would be different because they “drew a lot of inspiration and reference from the game and the entire Tomb Raider canon to develop our world…. At the same time, this is a completely different theatrical approach to Lara Croft.”

We’ll see if Lara can earn her title as Tomb Raider when the remake is released on March 16th, 2018.

The 1983 movie Scarface starred Al Pacino (The Godfather) as Tony Montana, a Cuban immigrant who takes over a drug cartel. The film was nominated for three Golden Globes and is remembered fondly, so Hollywood finally decided to remake it.

Based on the novel by Armitage Trail, the screenplay is being written by the Coen Brothers, Jonathan Herman, and Terence Winter. The only actor listed for the movie so far is Diego Luna (Rogue One) as Tony Montana. Weirdly enough there were rumors stating Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception) would be playing Tony Montana and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family) would be playing his wife Gina Montana, but this was proven to be false.

David Ayer (Suicide Squad) was attached to direct but left the project, which draws the film’s August 10, 2018 release into question.

The Crow (1994) was based on a comic book series about a man who is murdered but comes back to life in order to get revenge for his own death and the murder of his fiancée. This film is remembered for its star, Brandon Bruce Lee (Rapid Fire), who sadly died on set after a fatal gun shot wound during filming.

Several actors were set to star in the lead role, including Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast), who was cast but pulled out, and Jack Huston (American Hustle), who left because of a scheduling conflict. It’s currently rumored that Jason Mamoa (Justice League) will be playing the main character.

The director for the new film is Corin Hardy (The Hallow). Several writers have taken turns writing the script, with earlier screenplays being written by Jesse Wigutow, Alex Tse, and Kevin Cornish. Newer writers include Nick Cave and Cliff Dorman.

It’s still tentative thanks to all the changing of hands, but The Crow should be coming out in 2018, despite it not having an official date.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is being made into another animated film. Hopefully this remake will be remembered much more fondly than the live-action Jim Carrey film.

Illumination Entertainment and Universal have been trying to remake this film for years and originally scheduled it for a November 2017 release. However, the film was delayed a year, and no reason was given– but not before it was announced that Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange) had been cast as The Grinch.

The film is being directed by newcomer Peter Candeland and produced by Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri (producer of Horton Hears a Who! and The Lorax). Audrey Geisel, the widow of Dr. Seuss, will be an executive producer on the film, as she has been with other Dr. Seuss productions. The writer adapting the Dr. Seuss book is Michael LeSieur (Keeping Up with the Joneses).

The hopefully final release date is November 9th, 2018.

Universal has been attempting to reboot their monster universe for years now. The studio tried setting up what it dubbed the “Dark Universe” with Dracula Untold (2014) with little success. Then the hope was that Tom Cruise in The Mummy (2017) would be the move that put the universe on the map. But in the end, Marvel still has the world pretty occupied with its superhero universe.

Universal is far from giving up, though, and one ofits next attempts will be The Wolfman… even though it was already remade the movie back in 2010, based on the original film from 1941.

The Wolf Man follows the legend of the werewolf; a man who turns into a wolf-like creature under the full moon who’s capable of tearing people limb from limb. Coming out only a year after The Mummy, the film will tie-into the Cruise film as another addition to Universal’s Dark Universe.

Not much info about the film is available yet, which isn’t a very good sign, but JoBlo indicates The Wolf Man will be howling once again in theaters starting (tentatively) March 30, 2018.

A star is reborn in this remake of the musical romantic drama from 1937. A Star is Born was originally about a North Dakota farm girl by the name of Esther Victoria Blodgett, who went to Hollywood to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. The film follows the trials and tribulations of Esther’s time in Hollywood.

This marks the third time A Star is Born has been remade. The first was in 1954 and starred Judy Garland and James Mason while the second was released in 1976 and starred Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. This new remake stars Bradley Cooper as Jackson Maine, Stefani Germanotta (better known to the world as Lady Gaga) as Ally, Sam Elliott as Jackson and Ally’s manager Bobby, and Dave Chappelle as Noodles.

In this version of the film, a movie star helps a younger singer/actress find fame, despite his own troubles with age and alcoholism. Prepare for a musical experience when A Star is Born comes to theaters on September 28, 2018.

The new All Quiet on the Western Front remake has been in the works for several years. At one point, Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) was attached to the project. This remake has a lot to live up to, being the third take on this story. The other two films were the Academy Award winning Best Picture version from 1930 and the oft forgotten Delbert Mann’s movie from 1979.

The film is a war story that takes us back to World War II and follows young German soldiers’ experiences while they’re on the western front. Previously, Roger Donaldson (The November Man) was set to direct and Radcliffe was going to star in the film. Now, Radcliffe is no longer involved with the project, and instead the film is supposed to star Travis Fimmel (Warcraft).

The only date suggested for the film has been 2018, but given the lack of information, there is a strong possibility it will be delayed.

Yes, once again, Disney is remaking Peter Pan. This time, rather than creating an origin story, Disney is recreating the J.M. Barrie’s classic about a boy who does’t grow up who brings three young siblings from London with him on a journey filled with magic on the enchanted island of Neverland that we got to see in cartoon form back in the 1950s.

Peter Pan will be directed by David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), who is familiar with remaking Disney live-action movies after helming Pete’s Dragon (2016). He will be writing the screenplay, along with Toby Halbrooks, who also worked on Pete’s Dragon. No one has been cast yet, but fans are hoping Tom Hiddleston (Thor), who has voiced Captain Hook before, will play the nefarious one-handed pirate.

The film is set to be released in 2018 but does not have an official release date.

Overboard (1987) was a romantic comedy starring Goldie Hawn (The First Wives Club) and Kurt Russell (The Thing). Hawn played a beautiful but vicious heiress who cheats her carpenter, played by Russell. When she gets amnesia, Russell gets back at her by pretending she is his wife and having her experience a working-class life style.

The remake of Overboard follows a similar plot but has characters with completely different names. Anna Faris (Mom) is playing Kate, Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) plays Theresa, John Hannah (The Mummy) plays Colin, and Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included) plays Leonardo. The film is being directed by Bob Fisher (We’re the Millers) and Rob Greenberg (How I Met Your Mother), who are also writing the script.

Hopefully we won’t be forgetting this remake when it comes out at an as-yet undetermined date in 2018.

Another addition to Universal’s Dark Universe, The Invisible Man remakes the 1933 movie of the same name.  Based on an H.G. Wells novel, the story follows Dr. Jack Griffin; a scientist who becomes invisible. He ends up going insane because of the drug he used to achieve his invisibility and begins murdering people in order to regain his visibility.

This film is much more likely to happen in 2018 than The Wolf Man. It will star Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) as the mad Dr. Griffin. There is also a rumor that Tom Cruise will appear as his character from The Mummy in the film. The screenplay is written by Ed Solomon (Now You See Me).

Despite not having an official release date, it’s likely that The Invisible Man will be released sometime in 2018.

The first time we got Robert Englund as the child murderer who came back from the dead to kill people in their dreams, slicing and dicing for several sequels, a television show and even crossing over with Jason from Friday the 13th. Then there was the unsuccessful remake in 2010 starring Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), which landed on a lot of worst remakes lists, despite Haley’s attempts at salvaging the film. Now, New Line is attempting to revive the franchise one more time.

The new A Nightmare on Elm Street film is in good hands, with New Line bringing David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2) in to write the remake. He is also currently adapting Dungeons & Dragons to film.

The film is being overseen by Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, and Dave Neustadter. It is scheduled for 2018 but does not have an exact date.

A hit comedy about three parapsychology professors capturing ghosts, Ghostbusters (1984) is fondly remembered and was remade in 2016 with a mostly female cast that underwhelmed in theaters. Ivan Reitman and his team did not give up, though, instead deciding to take Ghostbusters across multiple platforms.

Reitman has stated that an animated film followed by live-action films are currently in the works. He told i09, while promoting Ghostbusters VR,”I want to bring all these stories together as a universe that makes sense within itself. Part of my job right now is to do that.” Regarding the story, Jake Zim, the SVP of VR for Sony Pictures Entertainment teased the question: “…what happens when you’re not a Ghostbuster? If you’re on the paranormal side?”

Previously believed to be coming out in 2019 or 2020, there have been articles stating the new animated Ghostbusters film will be out as early as 2018. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that this franchise can bring us new scares and laughs in 2018!

Full of comedic horrors, Little Shop of Horrors (1986) starred a nerdy florist who tries to find romance while dealing with a talking plant that hungers for humans. This was a mature horror comedy with musical numbers, violence, and plenty of camp.

Warner Brothers is remaking the film as a musical. The new Little Shop of Horrors movie will be directed by WGA, DGA and Golden Globe nominated writer, director, and producer Greg Berlanti (Arrow). He has been the man behind the “Arrowverse” of DC Comics TV series that have done wonders for The CW. Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying) is writing the screenplay.

Hopefully this new take on Little Shop of Horrors will have some surprising cameos, since the original had Bill Murray and Steve Martin. It has been rumored to be coming out in 2018.

Untouchables is a remake of the French biography, comedy and drama called The Intouchables (2011). The film was about a quadriplegic, Philip, who hires a caregiver from the projects to assist him. Although the caretaker’s name is Driss in the movie and he is a West-African man, in real-life the man was Algerian and named Abdel. The film was extremely well-received and became the top grossing foreign film of 2012 in North America. It was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Foreign Language film category and is the second highest-grossing film in France.

In the new film, renamed Untouchables,  the main character’s name has again been changed, this time to Dell. He will be played by Kevin Hart (Jumanji). Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) will be playing Philip. Other actors in the film include Nicole Kidman (Aquaman) as Yvonne, Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) as Lily, and Aja Naomi King (How to Get Away With Murder) as Latrice. The film is directed by Neil Burger (Limitless) and the screenplay is by Jon Hartmere and Paul Feig (the director of Bridesmaids).

This comedy based on real-life events will be in theaters starting on March 9, 2018.

I heard they were going to remake Scarface with a female lead.

The original Little Shop of Horrors was made in 1960. The remake in 1986 was a musical.
