20 Movie Plot Holes You Won’t Be Able To Unsee

1

OCEAN’S ELEVEN

Switching the money for flyers of a lovely Las Vegas night lady was an important part of the heist. But how could they have gotten the ‘fake money’ into the vault? Yen smuggles his way inside in a tiny cart, while Ocean and Linus rappel themselves down a shaft laced with lasers. Even the director admitted on the commentary that he was stumped on how it was done.

2

ARMAGEDDON

We’ve all thought it, and Ben Affleck even said it on set, “I asked [the director] ‘wouldn’t it be easier to train astronauts to drill than to teach drillers how to be astronauts?’ To which he replied ‘shut the f— up, Ben.”

3

HARRY POTTER

In The Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry and Hermione successfully travel back in time using the time turner device. So, why don’t those use it to go back in time and save their countless other friends who die, or even stop Voldemort from murdering his parents altogether.

4

PANDORUM

The ship has reached destination and been there for 800 years. How or why most of its systems are still functioning and why there’s still edible food on board is never explained.

5

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Throughout the films, we see Bruce Wayne, billionaire playboy bachelor, in newspapers and on covers of magazines. So what made him think that, in a world where picture-sharing technology is rampant, he could disappear at the end without anyone recognizing him?

6

THE KARATE KID

It is said multiple times throughout the film that kicking your opponent in the face will result in disqualification. But how does Daniel win the final fight? By crane kicking Billy Zabka in the face.

7

THE MAZE RUNNER

During the “we’ve tried everything” speech in the beginning, Newt says that they can’t climb to the top because the ivy doesn’t go all the way up. In multiple shots of the maze wall, it is clearly visible that the Ivy does go all the way to the top. Not to mention they surely could’ve built a ladder with all the supplies they had.

8

MR. NOBODY

The young Nemo, having ran into the forest and thus did not follow his mother to Canada, blows a leaf which leads to the adult him and Anna being reunited again at the lighthouse. However, this scenario is impossible because he only meets and falls in love with Anna if he moves to Canada with his mother.

9

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS

The elaborate ice sculptures in the film may be beautiful, but where the hell did Edward get all that ice?

10

28 DAYS LATER

Usually in zombie films, the undead don’t eat each other because they are crazing brains (or human flesh). But in 28 Days Later, the rage virus just turns people into violently aggressive killers. So, in their uncontrollable states, why do they only attack the “normal” people and never each other?

11

LORD OF THE RINGS

This is a common complaint in Lord Of The Rings: why doesn’t Gandalf just get his giant eagle mates to fly into Mordor and drop Frodo/ the ring-bearer off at Mount Doom. Some say because it’s not the Eagles’ war, and that would be asking too much.

12

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION

If you can get past the fact that Andy never changed cells once in 19 years, many people still wonder how he could’ve put the poster back on the wall once he had crawled inside the tunnel.

Well, some people have actually explained that he could’ve left the tape on the top part of the poster and let the rest come down naturally, never having to tape the bottom back on.

13

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

Evan proves his story to his cellmate by going back to kindergarten and harming himself badly enough to still have scars when he’s in prison. But, within the reality of the movie, Evan’s “gift/curse” doesn’t work that way. After harming himself, he would’ve had those scars long before he arrived at prison, and his cell mate wouldn’t have remembered him going back scarless.

14

CINDERELLA

After midnight, all of Cinderellas’s enchanted items lose their power, just like the fairy said they would. There is no reason why the magic shoes would’ve remained in their enchanted state of glass.

15

INDEPENDENCE DAY

The human race is saved when Jeff Goldblum’s computer wizard creates a virus that will destroy the aliens’ technology. Firstly, they’re using a Mac, and anyone who owns a Mac knows that they aren’t compatible with anything. Secondly, if the aliens are as advanced as they appear to be, how is it plausible that a human-made virus would be able to take down their far superior system.

16

LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER

Lara’s whole goal in the film is to destroy the triangle so the Illuminati can’t use its evil power. However, after successfully getting the first half, she spends the test of the film trying to acquire the second half in order to destroy them both. The problem is that she has one piece already and one half can not work without joining it with the other. So, why doesn’t she just destroy the one she has, rendering the second piece useless?

17

E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL

The iconic bike scene proves E.T. is basically magic and can levitate objects. So, why doesn’t he just levitate himself right at the beginning of the film and get back onto his spaceship? He’s so close to it!

18

THE HANGOVER

Every square inch of a Nevada casino is covered by surveillance cameras (minus restrooms, guest rooms, and employee locker rooms). There’s simply no way that Doug could’ve been on the roof for two days without someone seeing him and sending security to make sure that he wasn’t up to no good or even trying to commit suicide.

19

TOY STORY

If Buzz Lightyear doesn’t believe he’s a toy, and does in fact think he’s a real space ranger, then why would he freeze around humans like the other toys do?

20

JURRASIC WORLD

In the end, they save the day by luring the T-Rex to fight the Indominus Rex. However, the idea that Claire could outrun a T-Rex (and in heels) is outrageous.
