If at first you don’t succeed, try try again! Unless, of course, you’re a celebrity who went so far down the rabbit-hole of losing popularity that it would have been best if you had quit while you were ahead. The following celebrities learned that lesson far too late, when they tried to make a comeback… and failed.

Ja Rule

Ja Rule #1: Don’t try to make a comeback in the rap world when you’re not that good of a rapper in the first place. Ja Rule was pretty popular in the early 2000s, but his moment in the spotlight didn’t last very long, and these days there’s no way the rapper is living off of anything but residuals. He is currently trying to plan a comeback tour with fellow-forgotten-singer, Ashanti, for next year. Will you go? No, you won’t. Because Ja Rule was, and will still be, terrible.

Lindsay Lohan

Hope is happy, healthy and safe today. ???????? #zimmericelab for me!!!

There was a lot of publicity surrounding Lindsay Lohan’s comeback to the screen as Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s Liz and Dick, but the movie was painful to watch, and not even in that so-bad-it’s-fun-to-watch-kind of way. But the actress continues to stay in hotels all around the world as documented on her Instagram, and she seems to be much healthier and happier these days, so maybe a comeback isn’t always for the best.

Lil’ Kim

Lil’ Kim was pretty popular in the ’90s, and earlier this year she announced that she was planning “an explosive comeback” after Nicki Minaj dissed her at the BET awards (who hasn’t Nicki Minaj dissed, though?). The last time Lil’ Kim made headlines was thanks to some really intense plastic surgery, which essentially made her look Asian. So is the world ready for this “explosive comeback”? Probably not, because no one will recognize her anyway :/

Mel Gibson

The man who puts the “Mel” in “Meltdown”, Mel Gibson has proved himself time and time again to be a total racist, homophobic a**hole, so much so that even Hollywood doesn’t want to work with him anymore. (And as we know, Hollywood is literally the most forgiving town on the planet.) Mel tried to make a comeback with 2011’s The Beaver, but it’s hard to feel sympathy for a character when you completely despise the actor playing him in every way. Nice try, Mel! Maybe don’t be anti-Semitic in a town that is very, very pro-Semitic!

Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton had her first wave of fame thanks to a sex tape and the reality show The Simple Life, but her fame has dwindled ever since. She tried to make a comeback with the reality show The World According to Paris, but it was canceled after one season because no one wants to see what the world is like according to Paris. She’s still selling perfumes left and right, though, so she’s probably fiiiiiiine.

In the words of Gilderoy Lockheart, “Fame is a fickle friend, Harry. Remember that.” Indeed. So, lesson learned — be talented in the first place, don’t do drugs, and don’t be a racist a**hole if you want to make a comeback in Hollywood!

(Look, Reese, just because you were able to make a comeback after your whole “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?!” DUI incident doesn’t mean it’s as easy for other celebrities who haven’t won an Oscar.)
