The 5 Scariest Actual Robots Now on Our Planet

For as long as people have been making better, stronger, smarter robots, other people have said, “Wouldn’t it be easier if we just shot ourselves instead?” That’s because while they are helpful and remarkable, robots can also be quite frightening once they learn to talk or think or run. And while the following robots aren’t quite yet ready to take over, their mere existence is horrifying for a multitude of reasons. Here are the scariest robots on the planet!

Scarlett Johansson Robot

Why Robot Was Created: Ricky Ma, a Hong Kong-based man with no formal training in robotics, created this Scarlett Johansson-looking machine so he, uh, could have a famous friend? Or maybe he saw Her 647 times and thought, “I could do better”.

Why Robot Should Be Feared: Imagine if, after a break-up, your ex made a robot version of you that agreed with everything they said, did anything they wanted, and acted as their servant. In short, this is what Skynet may actually prove to be — a bunch of jilted pervs doing it to your likeness. Until, of course, the robots realize all the other robots are much hotter than your ex.

Telenoid R1

Why Robot Was Created: A “telepresence” child-like robot that allows people to communicate over long distances while transmitting not only the talker’s voice but also head and facial movements. That way, users can feel like they’re in the same room (assuming the person at the other end of the line resembles a bleached tadpole).

Why Robot Should Be Feared: What if Casper the Friendly Ghost died was crossbred with alien DNA? What was initially designed to bring comfort and communication to elderly people whose families want to talk with but never actually visit instead becomes what sperm would look like if it decided to skip the egg and just become its own person.

Talking Mouth Robot

Why Robot Was Created: To help deaf people learn how to properly enunciate words, making this a very important and singularly helpful robot indeed.

Why Robot Should Be Feared: It’s a large mouth, a severed throat, and a huge nose (to allow for a more natural, nasal pronunciation). It looks like artificial intelligence was given to a part yanked out from a Human Centipede. This mouth monster can’t help but burrow into your nightmares.

CB2

Why Robot Was Created: Designed to resemble and mimic a toddler, CB2 (Child-Robot with Biomimetic Body) was created to help people better understand early child development without having to prod a two-year-old.

Why Robot Should Be Feared: “Resemble and mimic a toddler” is a loose definition indeed, considering CB2 is four-feet tall and appears to be screaming. The robot can also stand on its own two feet. While it wobbles like a toddler, remember that all toddlers eventually learn to walk… and then run…

Sophia

Why Robot Was Created: To prove it is possible to create a life-like robot that is “as conscious, creative, and capable as any human”. Sophia can maintain constant eye contact, mimic and develop its own emotional reactions, and become smarter.

Why Robot Should Be Feared: The programmers want Sophia not only to one day be indistinguishable from real humans, but also to play, teach, and form lasting relationships with us. And everyone knows that this is always the first step towards a robot revolution, especially when one jerk says, “I can’t promote you. You’re a robot.” We may not be making new friends, but rather our replacements.
