Most people have wondered what it would be like to be a celebrity for a day. But since being a celebrity is awful, many of those who actually reach the pinnacle of fame also find themselves wondering what it would be like to be somebody else. Of course, that somebody often has their own recording contract and brand management team, but still, it’s nice to know that stars share our dreams. But sometimes, those dream takes some very weird turns, as the following alternate identities show. Here are the strangest alter egos celebrities have ever concocted:

Prince/Camille

The man who once replaced his name with an unpronounceable symbol had planned an entire singing career for his female alter ego named Camille. This project would have included an album titled “Camille” that would bear no mention of Prince and feature no photo on the cover. But with just a few weeks to go until its release, the album was canceled. Prince re-recorded one of Camille’s songs, “I Wish I Were Your Girlfriend”, as a single. After that, he said the entire Black Album was Camille’s idea (at which point an alias began to sound more like a possession).

Justin Bieber/Shawty Mane

Some people think that, no matter what Justin Bieber does with his career, he will never garner even the level of respect we give circus freaks. And maybe it was realizing this that lead him to create his rap alter ago Shanty Mane. How good Justin/Shawty is at spitting rhymes is a matter of personal taste, but choosing a name that sounds like the horrible late-’90s UPN sitcom Shasty McNasty did not speak well of his future creative choices.

Lady Gaga/Jo Calderone

While Prince was constantly announcing then canceling his plans to introduce his feminine split personality, Lady Gaga just went on stage as an Andrew Dice Clay/ David Schwimmer mash-up. Gaga remained in character throughout the 2011 VMAs and, of course, managed to make the performance into a statement about being true to yourself and your ambitions. That’s always nice to hear, even through a fake New Jersey accent.

Garth Brooks/Chris Gaines

In the ’90s, Garth Brooks was arguably the biggest recording artist, so he could do whatever he wanted and not have anyone tell him his ideas were idiotic. And so, Brooks unleashed upon the world his Australian (yes, you read that right) rock star alter ego “Chris Gaines”, staring in a fake Behind the Music episode and recording an entire album under the name. Fans and critics alike were confused by the release, wondering why the country star didn’t just release a pop album under his own name, like Taylor Swift would do years later. Oddly enough, the album gave Garth his only Top 40 pop single with “Lost in You”, but it wasn’t enough to keep the experiment going. Garth soon returned to wearing flag shirts instead of emo wigs.

Kane/Dr. Isaac Yankem, DDS

Technically, this isn’t so much an alter ego as a previous ego, since pro wrestlers can go through many personas until they find the one that resonates with fans. And so, before Glenn Jacobs won the World Heavyweight Championship as Kane, he appeared as Dr. Isaac Yankem, DDS. Supposedly fellow wrestler Jerry Lawler’s private dentist, the subtly named “Yankem” brought to the ring the fear that only the threat of an impacted molar could. Alas, that didn’t start a new wave of white collar wrestlers like “The Corporate Attorney” or “The Thoracic Surgeon”, and so Jacobs took on his later, eventually more popular persona.
