The Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, a luxurious hotel in Dubai, has been voted “best hotel in the world” several times and is the inspiration behind the term “seven-star hotel.”

That’s not luxurious, as much as it is ostentatious. It’s for people for whom spending lots of money has not yet lost its novelty.

The wealthy people I know either stay somewhere comfortable or familiar, where the hotel staff all know you and your preferences and know how to keep your secrets (think of the hotel in Pretty Woman), or they stay with friends. That doesn’t mean dusting off the spare room, it means they give you a villa on their private resort. It won’t be as flash as a “7 star” suite, but you can feel safe amongst friends, and away from the nosy public, like Prince Andrew with Epstein, except without the young ladies.
