What does it sound like when the sun is having a bad day? Astronomers have turned the aurora borealis — the phenomenon that occurs when solar winds hit Earth’s magnetosphere — into a song. Listen to the surprisingly creepy sci-fi soundtrack, recorded during a solar storm.

“We always expected a change in frequency but not the level of complexity in the wave,” said Dr. Lucile Turc, of the University of Helsinki. The study is based on data collected from the European Space Agency’s Cluster mission.
