Billy Connolly Has Been Knighted At Buckingham Palace

Comedian Billy Connolly has been knighted at Buckingham Palace for his services to the entertainment industry and his charity work.

The Duke of Cambridge knighted Billy today, ahead of the comedian and actor’s 75thbirthday in a few weeks.

The Glaswegian was listed in the Queen’s birthday honours list and told the BBC he was ‘a little embarrassed’ but ‘very pleased’.

He added: “I wish my sister was here. My sister Flo died last year and she would have loved that, and my parents are both dead, so I wish they were here to see it.”

But he couldn’t resist making a joke about his new title, saying: “I feel as if I should be called Lancelot or something. Sir Lancelot, that would be nice. Sir Billy doesn’t quite have the same ring.”

I don’t know, I quite like it.

Billy has had a long and varied career, starting out in comedy and stand up, he’s also had a successful acting career staring in A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies and lending his voice to Disney smash-hit Brave.

In 2013, he announced that he was undergoing treatment for the initial symptoms of Parkinson’s, after he said he struggled to remember his lines while performing.

He recently visited Number 10 to commemorate 200 years since the publication of Dr James Parkinson’s Essay on the Shaking Palsy.

He attended today’s ceremony with his wife, Pamela Stephenson.

Still alive, long career in show-biz, sucked up to the Royals for decades, no major scandals, bit of charity work, generally well liked … bingo. The bar is not set terribly high. There are a lot iffier knighthoods than this one.
