Bubba the Love Sponge won’t tell Howard Stern why he taped Hulk Hogan Screwing His Wife

Bubba the Love Sponge Clem, formerly Todd Alan Clem, the radio shock jock behind the Hulk Hogan sex tape, has been largely quiet on the subject over the course of the last month or so. While the shock jock would discuss it on his morning show to a point, there was a lot that he couldn’t say. That played into him asserting his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination and getting out of testifying — ostensibly because he could face facing charges for giving conflicting statements to the FBI and under oath in a deposition.

On Monday morning, Bubba’s friend and one of the tangential figures to the Hulk Hogan vs. Gawker Media trial, Howard Stern, decided to call up Bubba on the air while they were both doing their morning shows. The Tampa Bay Times, arguably the newspaper of record with regards to the lawsuit, picked up the story on Tuesday, and as it has since seemingly the beginning of time,Stern fan site MarksFriggin.com has the most detailed recap humanly possible.

The reason that this didn’t come up on Stern’s show until this week was that he had been on vacation when the trial concluded. A central part of the discussion was how Stern could have easily been in Hogan’s position since, like Hogan, Bubba and his wife Heather had also propositioned Stern about having sex with her. “Oh, I would die if there was a sex tape of me,” said Stern. “I would be humiliated.” At the time, he thought Bubba was just joking.

Obviously, the Hogan case changed his point of view. Once the discussion was out of the way, they tried to get Bubba on the phone. About an hour into the show, he was on hold and ready to go. As Stern and his staff prepared questions, Bubba told producer Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate that he couldn’t answer questions about why there was a camera in the bedroom in the first place. That’s an interesting ground rule to set, as the statute of limitations expired on the actual crime of recording Hogan without consent.

Probably the most newsworthy portion of the interview involved Bubba’s accounting of how he thought the video got leaked to Gawker. It’s been known since the November release of a Tampa PD police report that a former employee of Bubba’s, Matt “Spiceboy” Loyd, had allegedly stolen the DVDs, but it’s believed that his alleged accomplices ostensibly had nothing to do with the Gawker leak.

Bubba explained that he believes Loyd stole the DVDs and gave a copy of one of them to Mike “Cowhead” Calta, who leaked it to Gawker to try to get him fired so he could take over the prized morning drive time slot at their radio station. It was Calta’s agent, Tony Burton, who interfaced with Gawker editor A.J. Daulerio, but Calta and Burton’s official story is that a listener called the radio station anonymously asking for Gawker’s address to send the video. Bubba added that, to quote the MarksFriggin.com summary, “Heather and other people had threatened to use the tapes.”

As far as the big three questions that Stern and company came up with, “Do you still love Hulk Hogan?” was the one that got the most revealing answer from Bubba.

“I still would like to be his friend,” Bubba explained. “I did something that I’ll pay for for the rest of my life … I don’t necessarily know that I would expect him to ever forgive me and what I did, but I own it, I did it … It’s tough to know that I made that decision in life, for whatever reason and there’s a lot more than I can’t talk about.”

Bubba wouldn’t answer why he made the video (“Two wrongs don’t make a right, Howard.”) Stern’s third question was about who else there were videos of, which Bubba refused to answer, giving a cryptic answer about how “if I give you the data and I clamp down on it, it’s going to ruin lives.”

Some would argue it already has.

Bubba, Hulk, Heather, the lawyers… all of them are sleazy scumbags. Most especially Bubba.
