The thigh gap is increasingly becoming one of the most worrying body aspirations for young women.

And now a jewellery website appears to be catering to the trend, selling bespoke gold chains designed to hang in the space created by two concave thighs.

The pieces created by Soo Kyung Bae, a designer from Singapore for company TGAP, retail between $175 (£124) and $195 (£138).

The 18k gold plated pieces are designed as chains that loop around the tops of the thighs, dangling a gold tassel between the thighs.

The bizarre jewellery seems to be created with scrawny-thighed women in mind – rather than the vast majority of women whose legs touch above the knee.

Encouraging this kind of body shape may seem extremely concerning but TGAP is not all that it appears to be.

The jewellery on the site is not actually available to buy. Customers can browse the collection and even add pieces to their bag but once they hit check out they are redirected to page explaining that the site is all a hoax.

The page reads: ‘TGap Jewellery is a fictional company that sells jewelleries designed for thigh gaps.

‘It is launched to catalyse a debate on unrealistic body image social media portrays.’

Soo Kyung explains that she created the disturbing trend in a bid to cause a reaction to the worrying trend promoted by social media.

Bae told Dazeen: ‘The jewellery pieces take the thigh-gap trend to another level, the pieces are created in hopes of sparking questions.

‘If we let the media keep popularising such unrealistic body ideal, will this eventually become reality?

‘By using outrageous products, I hope to bring a provocative jolt that leads us to ponder and reflect upon what we are like as a society and the absurd things we value and obsess over – as well as how this creates unnecessary pressure for women and girls.’

Some Twitter users expressed anger and puzzlement about the jewellery. User @leahxleach said: ‘So someone has invented thigh gap jewellery lol awks when your thighs don’t have a gap’.

User @_RocketQueen tweeted: ‘Thigh. Gap. Jewellery. Are you actually for real’.

And Twitter use @BexxGlitter was angry, tweeting: ‘Thigh gap jewellery?! You’ve got to be having a f****** laugh!!’.

“the vast majority of women whose legs touch above the knee.”

Not where I live. Here that is the norm for any non-obese woman.
