Carl’s Jr. CEO opens up about the best and worst models he has hired for his famous commercials

    • The CEO of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s, Andy Puzder, is opening up about the brand’s famous commercials
    • Puzder says the brand does an amazing job using models before they hit it big
    • He also said that Kim Kardashian ate a salad in her spot because she would not be believable eating a hamburger
    • Heidi Klum was unlike the other models the brand has used as she is ‘no spring chicken‘ said Puzder
    • On Monday, the latest ad was released with Sports Illustrated alum model Samantha Hoopes seen below

Andy Puzder says that the key to the success of the fast food brand spots is the ability of the company to pick hot up and coming models and stars to be featured in the ads, and the anticipation that builds as people get excited to learn who will be featured next.

He also revealed what models work for the brand, and the few that were a little underwhelming.

Puzder tells the San Francisco Chronicle that it all began back in 2005 and a man named Jordin Mendelsohn at their advertising agency.

‘He came up with the idea to use Paris Hilton in an ad and make it a very cutting edge ad, where she was washing a Bentley,’ explained Puzder.

From there, countless other reality stars and models followed.

‘We have a history of picking these young women before they hit their peak,’ said Puzder of the brand’s casting eye.

‘We put Kate Upton in an ad a month before she got the cover for Sports Illustrated. At the time we picked her, we just said, “This is a beautiful woman.”‘ Heidi Klum eats a Carl's Jr. burger.

It is not all about young up and coming models either as even Heidi Klum appeared in one spot, despite the fact that, according to Puzder, the model ‘is no spring chicken.’

Almost all the ads feature the women eating the latest burgers being offered by the chain, with recent commercials starring Sports Illustrated stars Hannah Ferguson and Sara Sampaio.

Even some famous foodies have gotten in on the fun too, like Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi.Padma Lakshmi was the first to start in one of Carl's Jr.'s scandalous commercials.

‘Padma actually put in one of her cookbooks how when she was modeling as a teenager, her parents moved to Los Angeles,’ said Puzder.

‘They couldn’t eat meat, right? But she would sneak out to a Carl’s Jr. and get a Western Bacon Cheeseburger, and then lick the barbecue sauce off her fingers when she got home, so her parents couldn’t tell.’

Lakshmi’s manager disputed this statement and said he had never seen this passage in one of her cookbooks.

It seems that one person who was not cut out for burger eating however was Kim Kardashian.

‘Kim really couldn’t eat the burgers. Luckily, we had a salad we were promoting, so we used Kim in the salad ad,’ said Puzder.

‘But if we had not been promoting a salad, we probably never would’ve done an ad with Kim, because she wasn’t good at eating the burger. She’s too tiny. She’s really little.’

Kardashian’s team disputed this claim and said that a salad was selected to fit in with her healthy lifestyle.

He also said the numerous actresses have contacted him asking to be in the commercials, but they aren’t right for the brand. Charlotte McKinney starred in Carl's Jr.'s 2015 Super Bowl commercial.

On Monday, the latest ad was released with yet another Sports Illustrated alum, Samantha Hoopes.

Hoopes will have her work cut out for her too as she digs into the latest Carl’s Jr. creation – The Most American Thickburger.

That is a hamburger patty that is topped with cheese, a hot dog and potato chips.
