Couple Awarded $1.3 Million In Racial Profiling Lawsuit

Couple Awarded $1.3 Million In Racial Profiling Lawsuit

A Charleston jury on Wednesday reached a $1.3 million verdict for a couple who said they were arrested because they accused a white state trooper of racial profiling during a 2012 traffic stop. The judgment ended a three-day trial in the civil rights lawsuit by Catherine and Jerome Newkirk, who were pulled over for speeding by Trooper James Enzor in Florence County. The Newkirks alleged that the trooper had used excessive force in wrongfully arresting them. Both spent more than a day in jail, but neither was permanently injured. Much of their ordeal, though, was captured on the lawman’s in-car camera.

“That was invaluable for the jury to see,” Joe McCulloch, an attorney for the Newkirks, said shortly after the jury’s finding was announced in downtown U.S. District Court. “It was very persuasive. The jury was asked to send a message, and they did.” A request for comment from Enzor’s lawyer, Samuel Arthur III of Florence, was not immediately returned. The S.C. Department of Public Safety, the umbrella agency for the Highway Patrol, also was sued but settled with the Newkirks late last week for $100,000.

The verdict allows the couple’s lawyers to petition for a separate award of attorneys fees. U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel likely will weigh that request in coming weeks, but it could lift the state's financial toll to $2 million, McCulloch said. Enzor was later fired over comments he made to a co-worker about his agency's director. Those words also were caught on video.

'Goodbye Racist!' Passengers Cheer as Man Booted Off Flight

man who reportedly harangued a Pakistani couple was escorted off a United flight Saturday evening, drawing cheers from passengers. "Goodbye racist!" a woman hollered as the man and his companion were escorted off the plane, the Washington Postreports. The incident aboard Flight 1113 from Chicago to Houston began after a Pakistani couple in traditional dress boarded the plane. "That's not a bomb in your bag, is it?" a man asked them twice, a passenger sitting with her Indian-American boyfriend told KHOU. "The person ahead of us turned around and asked where my boyfriend was from; my boyfriend said it’s none of your business,” she says. “At that point he said all illegals and all foreigners need to leave the country.”

Passengers complained, and cellphone video captured a flight attendant approaching the man and asking him to gather his belongings. "I didn't do nothing," he protests. As he gets up to leave, the unidentified man says, "Happy flight home. I hope you stay there." A woman traveling with him flashes her middle finger. "Racists aren't welcome in America. This is not Trump's America!" says the woman filming. "Goodbye racist!" She tells KHOU that passengers cheered as the couple were led away. But in a parting shot, the man says, "Hey, I’ll come back, but you’ll be gone." A United rep tells the Post that removing passengers is rare but "most customers appreciate a place where they feel safe and where they’re not going to be attacked and we want to provide that."

Targets Of Racist Graffiti Now Getting Fined For It

Targets Of Racist Graffiti Now Getting Fined For It

When Heather Lindsay and Lexene Charles discovered the n-word painted across their garage door on the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, their first instinct wasn't to remove it. The interracial couple says their home in Stamford, Conn., has been vandalized several times and three neighbors have called Charles the n-word. In each case, police would "sweep it under the table," Lindsay tells the Stamford Advocate. Not this time. The couple chose to leave the graffiti for the whole neighborhood to see—and they could now go to jail as a result. A police chief tells NBC New York that the couple could face arrest after the city issued a blight citation, meaning Lindsay and Charles face a $100 fine for each day the slur remains visible.

Though officers are investigating the "disgusting" incident on Jan. 14, no witnesses have been found and neighbors are complaining the graffiti is "disturbing the peace," the city's director of public safety says. "There are kids in this neighborhood," says one. "Why do we have to subject them to that?" But Lindsay, 59, says the graffiti won't be removed until police "do their job" and "not just cover it up … as they have done in the past." "I'd like to find out who did it, because this has to stop," Charles, 56, adds, per ABC 7. The couple, who plan to fight any fines in court, are now asking police to investigate certain neighbors. "Act like you give a damn and make sure these people are protected," says a NAACP rep.

White Supremacist Gets Punched In The Face

White Supremacist Gets Punched In The Face

Here is a video of Richard Bertrand Spencer, a prominent figure in America championing white racial supremacy, getting slapped around.

Yep, can't condone it, but can show it.

Take a look here...

Bish bash bosh.

"Do you like black people," someone asks? "Yeah sure" is his reply.

10 seconds later, a man comes in, fists flying.

That said, I'm not sure a placard stating "WHITE LIVES MATTER TOO MUCH" is the best way of winning an argument. That guy, and the one who punched him, are not helping matters.

Luckily for Richard, he can take a punch, as he explains in a tweet.

The alt-right leader came to prominence after the Texan was recently seen shouting "Hail Trump, hail our people, hail victory," which was met with an abundance of Nazi salutes in the audience. Charming. I'm not showing that but you can YouTube it if you feel a compulsion.

He is currently the editor of the Radix Journal, not a particularly pleasant publication, as well as the president of the National Policy Institute, a think-tank for wankers.

He denies being a Neo-Nazi, yet doesn't seem to have much time for Jews or anyone other than white people in his own bubble, it seems.

After getting a big old hook to the face, he also claims he took a few more punches and was also spat on.

Obviously, he is using the assault to further his aims and objectives.

He also claims to have birthed the term 'alt-right' - which has the following definition:

"...an ideological grouping associated with extreme conservative or reactionary viewpoints, characterized by a rejection of mainstream politics and by the use of online media to disseminate deliberately controversial content."

Make up your own minds on him.

Waitress Who Was Left Racist Note By Customer Gets Overwhelming Response

Waitress Who Was Left Racist Note By Customer Gets Overwhelming Response

A waitress who was left a racist note by a customer has had an overwhelming response since the note was posted online.

Kelly Carter, who works at Anita's New Mexicso Style Café in the US, says she served two customers who she believed to be in their mid-20s. They asked for the bill for their meal and paid, but once they left she saw that they had written: "Great service don't tip black people."

A picture of the receipt was posted by Loudoun Couty NAACP on Twitter and has been shared hundreds of times, but it's the response from the local community that has been the most overwhelming.

The owner of the restaurant, Tommy Tellex, told the BBC that the response from regular customers and the rest of the community had been "phenomenal."

A crowd-funding account has raised over $2,828 (£2,325), smashing the original target of $2000; and others have been popping into the restaurant to give her cash.

Kelly told local media that she would happily serve the couple again, who she says complimented her on the breakfast she served them. She said: "One hateful remark cannot stop me.

"My arms are still opened to me. He only hurt himself. He only makes me stronger."

She insisted to that she really would like to see the couple again, saying: "Just me serving them will let them know they did not get the best of me. And I truly mean that."

Well, she's much bigger than me.

Dairy Queen Shuts Down Franchisee After Racist Rant

Dairy Queen Shuts Down Franchisee After Racist Rant

Dairy Queen has given the boot to one of its franchisees after he allegedly unleashed a racist tirade against a customer. Deianeira Ford visited a Zion, Ill., DQ on Wednesday with her two young children and asked for a refund after her order was mixed up. Owner James Crichton gave her one, though she says he also started yelling at her. "He called me and my children n------," Ford tells the Washington Post. "He said I can go back to where I came from." She called 911 and the responding officer spoke to Crichton, who, per the police report, "proudly admitted to calling Ford a n-----" and ranted about his other black customers. But since he hadn't committed a crime, there was nothing police could do. It ended up being Ford's own Facebook post that resulted in big consequences for Crichton.

Her post about the incident went viral, and on Saturday, dozens of demonstrators gathered—initially, they planned to protest the store and call for a boycott, the Lake County News-Sunreports. Instead, the gathering was a celebration, because on Friday Dairy Queen announced it was shutting down the location and terminating Crichton's franchise rights. DQ called Crichton's actions "inexcusable, reprehensible, and unacceptable," and Crichton himself apologized via a DQ statement. (Crichton had previously told the News-Sun Ford's story was "99% lies.") Ford's attorney tells the Post that legal action may still be taken against Dairy Queen, because since Ford came forward, other customers and employees of that location have shared similar stories.

Why JCPenney Shopper Has Been Banned For Life From Mall

Why JCPenney Shopper Has Been Banned for Life From Mall

Last-minute holiday shopping is usually stressful, but for two Hispanic women in Kentucky, a trip to the local mall proved even more so—and now everyone's watching the video of what happened. Per NBC News, a shopper at JCPenney in Louisville's Jefferson Mall laid into the women Tuesday when one of them joined the other at the register with items to pay for, making the third shopper irate. "Go back to wherever the f--- you come from, lady," the white shopper can be heard saying in the video, shot by customer Renee Buckner. "Get in the back of the line like everybody else does. … You’re nobodies." She went on to accuse the pair of being on welfare and told them to "speak English. You're in America. If you don't know it, learn it." Buckner posted the video on her Facebook page Tuesday with a short explanation of what had happened and the hashtag #exposingTheRacism.

"If we ignore it, it will never go away," she wrote. "This is what America has come to." Timothy Findley, a Louisville pastor who spoke to the Courier-Journal on Buckner's behalf, says she's been overwhelmed by response to the video and that "we all shared the same reaction: shock, disappointment, but not surprised." Findley tells NBC that after the camera was turned off, the ranting shopper mentioned how President-elect Trump "is going to 'fix' this." Reaction has come in in support of the two berated customers, with the Jefferson Mall noting on Facebook it will ban the perpetrator for life once she's IDed, and JCPenney looking to ID the two customers to apologize and "reimburse them for their entire purchase." Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer tweeted Wednesday about the incident, writing: "I am sad and disappointed to see conduct like what happened at Jefferson Mall, when one person so dehumanizes another human being."

Teacher Filmed Screaming at Kids - Then Came the N-Word

In the first 30 seconds of the video, the Baltimore teacher grabs a student by the hood of his shirt and screams at him to leave her class. Then things take a turn. The video shows the unidentified white female teacher calling her classroom of mostly black students "idiots," and telling them if they don't get an education, they'll end up being "a punk-ass n----- who's going to get shot." Viewers can see and hear the students' shocked reactions. School officials confirmed that the incident, captured on a video the Baltimore Sun says has been viewed more than a million times, happened on Tuesday at Harlem Park Elementary/Middle School. The teacher, a second-year science teacher who'd come to the school via an alternative certification program, which includes diversity training, has been fired.

The teacher "engaged in verbally abusive behavior and made racially charged comments directed at students," a school system statement notes, with Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Sonja Santelises saying she was personally "appalled." The New York Times reports the video, taken on a cellphone in an eighth-grade class, was sent to New York Daily News columnist Shaun King by a reader; the video went viral after Erica Gales Deminds, mom of a student in the class, posted it online. Deminds tells CNN while she's "utterly disgusted" by the video, she was also surprised, as the teacher was one of her son's favorites whom she'd met several times.

Prince Harry Slams ‘Racism And Abuse’ Of New Girlfriend In Rare Statement

Prince Harry Slams ‘Racism And Abuse’ Of New Girlfriend In Rare Statement

Meghan Markle is a successful actress, activist, UN Women Ambassador, fashion designer and writer. By anyone’s definition, she is famous.

But even with this public persona, Markle cannot have been prepared for the torrent of publicity directed her way when whispers that she is dating Prince Harry emerged from the murky depths of the rumour mill.

While the 35-year-old American actress has stayed dignified and tight-lipped on the matter, Prince Harry has had enough of the bullshit. In a statement confirming the relationship, Prince Harry calls out both the underlying sexism and racism within the mainstream media and the undeniable torrent of abuse Markle has faced from online trolls.

The statement, released this morning by Kensington Palace, reads:

Prince Harry is worried about Ms Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.

It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms Markle should be subjected to such a storm.

He knows commentators will sat this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part off the game’. He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.

The statement detailed the trauma Markle and her family have been put through by commentators and the so-called professionals that give tabloid journalists such a bad name.

It continued:

…The nightly legal battles to keep defamatory stories out of papers; her mother having to struggle past photographers in order to get to her front door; the attempts of reporters and photographers to gain illegal entry to her home and the calls to police that followed; the substantial bribes offered by papers to her ex-boyfriend; the bombardment of nearly every friend, co-worker, and loved one in her life.

The details must serve to put into perspective what this intelligent, talented women has suffered at the hands of the world’s media, who still insist on treating the personal lives of beautiful females like fodder from a trashy romantic novel.

Sexualised images of Markle in character (she plays Rachel Zane in Suits) have been splashed around the web – and even posted to Pornhub – alongside unfounded rumours about her personal and sex life.

Unsuprisingly, many outlets have failed to note Markle’s continual aid work and activism, choosing instead to resort to unflattering hearsay and conjecture about Merkle’s character.

According to Kensington Palace, a ‘line has been crossed’, causing Harry to make this rare public statement about his personal life. It’s good to see the usually tight-lipped monarchy calling out the sexist and misogynistic rubbish some people have been spouting.

Just because celebrities are in the public eye, doesn’t mean they must accept the pitfalls – such as defamation and loss of privacy – that fame in modern society inflicts upon them.

Just because Markle spent her career playing a character, doesn’t mean the recent media storm isn’t real, and doesn’t impact a real person. She’s still human. We should learnt to respect and treat her as thus.

A Professor Circled “Hence” On A Latina Student’s Paper And Wrote “This Is Not Your Word”

A Professor Circled “Hence” On A Latina Student’s Paper And Wrote “This Is Not Your Word”

“How many degrees do I need for someone to believe I am an academic?” Tiffany Martinez wrote in a blog post describing the incident.

A Latina student at a university in Boston said that her professor on Thursday handed back her paper and told her, in front of the class, “This is not your language.”

After looking at more of the comments the professor left on her literature review, Suffolk University sociology major Tiffany Martínez noticed that the professor had circled the word “hence” and had written, “This is not your word,” underlining “not” twice.

And at the top of her paper, the professor had written, “Please go back & indicate where you cut & paste.”

Martínez, an aspiring professor who was born and raised in the Bronx, said that her professor had called her to the front of the senior seminar course on Thursday to receive her graded paper when she made the language comment.

“She spoke loudly enough that students at the back of the room heard and asked if I was OK after class,” Martínez said.

She felt terrified after the incident.

“I spent the rest of the class going back through every single line, every single citation to make sure that nothing had been plagiarized, even though I knew I hadn’t,” she said.

Later that day in a blog post titled “Academia, Love Me Back,” Martínez wrote about her experiences as both a first-generation college student and US citizen at what she calls “an institution extremely populated with high-income white counterparts.”

“My last name and appearance immediately instills a set of biases before I have the chance to open my mouth,” she wrote.

“As a minority in my classrooms, I continuously hear my peers and professors use language that both covertly and overtly oppresses the communities I belong to. Therefore, I do not always feel safe when I attempt to advocate for my people in these spaces,” she added.

Martinez also described how the incident made her doubt her capabilities as a scholar.

In this interaction, my undergraduate career was both challenged and critiqued. It is worth repeating how my professor assumed I could not use the word “hence,” a simple transitory word that connected two relating statements. The professor assumed I could not produce quality research. The professor read a few pages that reflected my comprehension of complex sociological theories and terms and invalidated it all. Their blue pen was the catalyst that opened an ocean of self-doubt that I worked so hard to destroy. In front of my peers, I was criticized by a person who had the academic position I aimed to acquire. I am hurting because my professor assumed that the only way I could produce content as good as this was to “cut and paste.” I am hurting because for a brief moment I believed them.

Martínez said her blog posts usually average 15 views and three shares among her close friends. The one she wrote yesterday has been viewed and shared thousands of times on social media, and has garnered hundreds of comments from other people of color who have experienced similar treatment at school.

Facebook: tiffanycorin

“It’s surreal how overwhelmingly supportive the academic community has been, but they’re also telling me, ‘This isn’t going to end now,’” Martínez said.

She has not spoken with the professor since the incident, but has brought it to the attention of the chair of Suffolk University’s sociology department, who has launched an investigation.

“The head of the department is very familiar with my work and my writing,” Martínez said. “He looked over my paper and had nothing but good things to say.”

She's A Black Doctor. Delta Staff Couldn't Believe It - Tamika Cross Alleges 'Blatant Discrimination'

When Tamika Cross heard a mid-flight call for a doctor to help an unresponsive passenger aboard a Delta flight from Detroit to Minneapolis, she immediately threw her hand in the air. "Oh no, sweetie, put [your] hand down, we are looking for actual physicians or nurses," the OB/GYN, who's black, says she was told by a flight attendant. The "blatant discrimination" didn't end there, Cross wrote in a Sunday Facebook post shared 36,000 times. Once she conveyed that she was in fact a doctor, Cross says the flight attendant bombarded her with questions about her credentials and why she'd been in Detroit before ushering a white male who said he was a physician and "fit the 'description of a doctor'" to the unresponsive passenger.

Cross says the flight attendant later returned to seek her advice on the passenger—who was treated by paramedics in Minneapolis, per MLive—and she assisted "despite the choice words I had saved up for her. The patient and his wife weren't the problem." The flight attendant later apologized and offered to give her Delta SkyMiles, but "I don't want SkyMiles in exchange for blatant discrimination," Cross says. "I'm sure many of my fellow young, corporate America working women of color can all understand my frustration when I say I'm sick of being disrespected." The Washington Post reports her post has inspired other black female doctors to speak out against stereotypes on Twitter using the hashtag#WhatADoctorLooksLike. Delta says it's investigating.

Educator Fired For Calling Michelle Obama 'Gorilla'

An Atlanta-area woman threw away a 27-year career as an educator in the seconds it took her to make ugly comments about Michelle Obama online. Forsyth County Schools says paraprofessional teacher's aide Jane Wood Allen was fired after calling Michelle Obama a gorilla on Facebook, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. "I admire a gorilla more than I admire her. (Wait, I forgot. She is a gorilla)!" Allen wrote, sharing an article about the first lady topping a list of the most admired women in the world. "If she was a real First Lady, she would not have used and abused her title, by thinking that she is entitled to go on all the trips that she takes every other day," Allen wrote.

"This poor Gorilla. How is she going to function in the real world, by not having her luxurious vacations paid for anymore," Allen posted when sharing another article last week. Forsyth County News reports that Allen made anti-Muslim and anti-Hispanic remarks when sharing other stories. She "has been relieved from duty and is no longer an employee of Forsyth County Schools," a spokeswoman for the district said in a statement. "Racism and discrimination are not tolerated in our school district."

Internet Trolls Destroy Yelp Page Of American Fried Chicken, Which Is Owned By Father Of Bomber Ahmad Khan Rahami

Internet Trolls Destroy Yelp Page Of American Fried Chicken, Which Is Owned By Father Of Bomber Ahmad Khan Rahami

This morning, New York and New Jersey bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami was captured after an intense manhunt. Rahami was named as the main suspect in the bombings in Chelsea New York as well as Seaside Park and Elizabeth in New Jersey. Soon after, it was revealed that Rahami’s family owned the First American Fried Chicken restaurant in Elizabeth. Internet trolls tried to exact a strange vigilante justice for the bombings by writing horrible reviews on the Yelp page for the fried chicken joint.

The restaurant had only three reviews with an average rating of 4.67 before Monday morning. However, by Monday afternoon the restaurant had a 1.7 rating on 89 customer reviews.

There was literally the same “joke” throughout the reviews on Yelp.

And there were many photos posted to their Yelp page in the past few hours, some of them very distasteful and aggressive.

There was even one review by “Harambe T.”

Yelp flagged the page and added an “Active Cleanup Alert” warning.

Bomb Suspect Once Sued New Jersey Police Claiming Religious Discrimination

Bomb Suspect Once Sued New Jersey Police Claiming Religious Discrimination

As more is learned about Ahmad Khan Rahami, the 28-year-old apprehended Monday in connection with bombings in New York City and New Jersey, it’s been revealed that the suspect once sued the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey, along with its police department and eight specific members of the force. Rahami, along with his father, Mohammad Sr, 53, and his brother Mohammad, filed a lawsuit in Newark in 2011 alleging religious and racial discrimination, false arrest, and abuse of process by the police.

According to the Daily Mail, Rahami’s family claimed that police tried to shut down their restaurant at 10 p.m. every evening with “baseless tickets and summonses,” even though they were permitted to stay open late. In the lawsuit, the Rahamis claimed officers falsely told them there was “too much crime” in the area around the restaurant and that it was “known for criminal activity.” They argued that they were being subject to “selective enforcement… solely based on an animus against plaintiff’s religion, creed, race and national origin.”

The lawsuit also alleged that a neighbor, one James McDermott, hurled racist insults at the family, telling them “Muslims make too much trouble in this country… Muslims should not have businesses here… Muslims are trouble…” and “Muslims don’t belong here.”

Speaking to the Daily Mail, McDermott denied the accusations:

“Mohammad Rahami was operating in violation of some local ordinances, he operated way beyond closing time and it became a hangout for kids,” he said.

“I made complaints about it and he took offense at that. The city took him to court for his violations and then he sued the city, the police officers that were involved and me as well. We won the case.”

“He was supposed to close at 10pm, he was staying open illegally until four or five o’clock in the morning.”

“He wouldn’t let the kids in there drinking soda use the restroom and tell them to go around the corner so they would come around and use my driveway as a bathroom, that’s what I took the biggest offense at.”

“Other than the lawsuit, I kept away from them.”

The case was thrown out “with prejudice” in 2012, meaning it couldn’t be brought to court again.

Kanye West Draws Backlash After Inviting ‘Multiracial Women Only’ To Audition For His Fashion Show

Kanye West Draws Backlash After Inviting ‘Multiracial Women Only’ To Audition For His Fashion Show

A controversial casting call for Kanye West's next fashion show struck a sour note with some fans.

The often-polarizing rapper mandated that "multiracial women only" show up to Sunday's audition for his upcoming "Yeezy Season 4" event — prompting a wave of disgruntled social media followers to accuse the rapper of only wanting light-skinned females in his show.

"Hmm @ multiracial women only," one user replied to the casting call, which West posted to Twitter. "Does that include the dark skinned multiracial women or just the light skinned ones?"

Another echoed this sentiment, suggesting West wasn't interested in anybody who doesn't have a similar skin tone to his wife Kim Kardashian or his famous ex-girlfriend Amber Rose.

"Multiracial = ethnically ambiguous = Amber Rose-ish = Kardashian-y = mixed = no Black women allowed," they wrote.

Despite the backlash, thousands of women lined up outside the venue on Sunday in hopes of being picked — and many had no problem with West’s divisive racial requirement.

"Multiracial doesn't mean light skinned,” Imogen Cooper, 22, told the Daily News. “You can be multiracial and have dark skin tones or pale skin tones. It doesn't really matter. If you look at people in line, there are people of all skin colors

Cooper’s friend Jordan Rolling, seconded this, saying it’s up to the artist to decide what they want in their production.

"I don't see anything wrong with it because it's his vision,” the 24-year-old opined. "As an artist, if you have a vision, people shouldn't be able to say anything about that vision.”

But the reaction online was decidedly less positive.

"This is a major issue," wrote one particularly irate woman. "In an industry that consistently cuts Black models out, you do this?! You are the absolute worst. Truly."

Some questioned what exactly West meant by the seemingly ambiguous "multiracial" term, while one user simply chalked it up as "no white people."

Under that same breath, another follower asked "so no black women??"

West, 38, is expected to debut his new clothing line on Wednesday, Sept. 7 during New York Fashion Week.

It's not the first time the "Famous" rapper has sparked controversy during the style-focused event. Last year, fellow designer Anne Bowen blasted the artist after he added a runway show to the already congested Fashion Week schedule at the very last minute.

"Kanye knows he is a media sensation and it is just not ethical to do this," she told Women's Wear Daily at the time. "It's like we are David and he is Goliath. We have put our heart and soul into our show, and should not be stepped on like this."

A rep for West did not immediately respond to the Daily News' request for comment following the latest drama.

Teacher Apologizes After Class Picks Racist Nickname

Teacher Apologizes After Class Picks Racist Nickname

School officials are apologizing after a group of sixth-graders in Texas chose a derogatory nickname for their class. Classrooms were allowed to pick nicknames as part of a team-building exercise at Bell Manor Elementary School in Bedford, and one class wanted to be called the "Jighaboos," a name that was then posted on a sign in the classroom. What the teacher didn't realize, until a parent reported the nickname to school administrators, is that the word is a derogatory term for a black person, the Star-Telegram reports.

"The teacher took [the sign] down. She was mortified, and she cried," a spokesperson for the Hurst-Euless-Bedford school district says. An angry father who saw the sign took a picture of it and notes to Fox 4 that it read, "Mrs. ____'s Jighaboos are at school today to achieve our 6th grade goals and prepare for 7th grade." "She makes them recite that out loud," he says. "You put Dream Team and then you have the Jighaboos. Really? Really with that?" Both the teacher and the principal have apologized, as well as district officials. A new process is in place in which administrators will vet nicknames before they're posted.

A North Carolina Church Is Holding ‘Racists Anonymous’ Meetings

A North Carolina Church Is Holding ‘Racists Anonymous’ Meetings

If you’re a self-admitted racist looking to change your ways, look no further than a North Carolina church that is holding “racists anonymous” meetings.

The church in question is Trinity United Church of Christ in Concord, which reportedly borrowed the idea from a California congregation. According to signage that reads “Racism: Ignore it…and it won’t go away” in front of the church, RA meetings are held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Like Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous, RA is run by a licensed therapist and adheres to the 12-step model which allows participants freedom in deciding how much — or little — they’d like to disclose.

The Concord church joins 20 other congregations who have opened their doors to this controversial program, according to WCNC. “It seemed like every week we were coming into worship and we were doing another prayer because someone had been killed in the street,” Trinity United Church of Christ Reverend Nathan King told the station.

Carol Stanley, who runs Trinity United Church’s RA meetings, said some participants flat-out admit they’re racist while others claim they’re not sure.”But we’re becoming clearer and clearer on the unconscious racism that we all carry,” Stanley told WJZY. “It’s a way to address one’s own racism as a spiritual practice and discipline.”

King claimed about a dozen people, young and old, are in attendance each week. Though RA meetings may seem like an unorthodox way to combat racism, the reverend believes churches could be doing more to center themselves on race-based issues. King said, “I think the churches came together on civil rights, I was a product of that, but I think we got complacent and it’s crept back in.”

Hacker Leaks Leslie Jones' Personal Info And Nude Photos

Hacker Leaks Leslie Jones' Personal Info And Nude Photos

Comedian and actress Leslie Jones continues to be the victim of horrific online abuse for the crime of appearing in a Ghostbusters reboot. On Wednesday, Jones' website was hacked, with someone posting nude photos of the Saturday Night Live star, as well as images of her driver's license and passport and video of Harambe the gorilla, reports theNew York Daily News, which calls the cyberattack "explicit and horribly racist." Variety describes it as a "gross invasion of privacy." The photos of Jones appear to have come from her phone or iCloud. Jones' website was quickly taken down, and she hasn't commented.

Last month, Jones suffered a wave of racist and sexist attacks on Twitter, leading her to briefly deactivate her account, the New York Times reports. But she returned in time to live-tweet the Olympics, gaining enough attention that NBC flew her to Rio to cover some of the games in person.

Here's a life lesson: If you're going to have an issue tipping your servers, it's probably best you stay at home and stuff your face with some mac and cheese. And if you're a total racist and idiot, it's best you stay away from people all together. Unfortunately, the idiots in this story didn't do any of those things.

Sadie Elledge, an 18-year-old waitress who works at Jess' Lunch, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, was waiting on a couple who had ordered just two gyros and a salad. And all was fine and non-racist until the $26.11 bill came in and Sadie saw what the couple had left as a tip.

Check out what the tip was thanks to John Elledge's (Sadie's grandfather) Facebook:

John posted a picture of the receipt on his Facebook where it went viral, causing the restaurant to pull surveillance video from the incident, and according to John the police got involved:

"The way I understand it, the woman who signed the receipt is at the restaurant this very second with the police," he told Huffington Post. "She's angry and the police are there. Apparently, she just signed the receipt. She didn't write the comment."

And if you're interested, Sadie is a U.S. Citizen, and her father was born in Honduras, while her mother in Mexico. Sadie also has some words for that couple:

"It doesn't matter whether I'm Hispanic or American or whatever you want to call it. I'm still a person and you should still treat me with respect."

Ellen Insists She's Not Racist After Controversial Bolt Tweet

Ellen Insists She's Not Racist After Controversial Bolt Tweet

Ellen DeGeneres is in hot water after tweeting a photo Monday showing her riding on the back of Usain Bolt. The photo of the Jamaican sprinter grinning back at his competitors as he won gold in the 100-meter dash in the Rio Olympics quickly got turned into quite a few memes. But DeGeneres' version of the meme, which showed her on Bolt's back along with the caption, "This is how I’m running errands from now on," quickly became controversial as some slammed it for being racist.

Ellen DeGeneres has defended herself from accusations of racism after posting on social media an edited photo of herself riding on the back of Jamaican Olympic runner Usain Bolt.

DeGeneres tweeted a Photoshopped version of the viral Bolt meme showing her piggybacking on the athlete's back:

The original picture of Bolt smiling while sprinting went viral after his gold medal win in the 100mdash.

But many users criticised DeGeneres' version, claiming it perpetuates the racist image of a white woman riding a black man as a form of transport:

Others defended the comedian, highlighting that she's often spoken out against all forms of discrimination. Bolt himself retweeted the picture:

DeGeneres replied to the critics on Tuesday afternoon:

The talk show host frequently posts photos of herself edited into topical moments and scenes from popular films and TV shows.

Police Union's 'Black Labs Matter' Photo Is 'Inflammatory'

Police Union's 'Black Labs Matter' Photo Is 'Inflammatory'

In an effort to "tone down the rhetoric" surrounding fatal police shootings, the San Francisco police union published a photo that, in the eyes of mayor Ed Lee, does the exact opposite, KRON reports. The photo published in the August edition of the San Francisco Police Officers Association Journal shows a picture of a black lab with a sign reading "Black Labs Matter" and a white lab with a sign reading "All Labs Matter." The photo didn't go over well. “It’s so inflammatory, and they still don’t get it. They still choose to inflame situations, and it’s just really insulting.” Sgt. Yulanda Williams, president of an organization representing nonwhite San Francisco officers, tells the San Francisco Chronicle.

"It's not a joke we're playing with," Shawn Richard of the San Francisco NAACP tells NBC Bay Area. "We're dealing with a lot of racial issues right now." The San Francisco Police Department is currently being reviewed by both the US Justice Department and a panel of judges following a number of incidents, including racists texts sent between officers. The executive director of the panel of judges tells the Chronicle that publishing the dog photo "shows a severe lack of judgement and empathy" on the part of the union. Richard says the union is joking around while families grieve the loss of their loved ones. The union refused to comment on the photo.

New Miss Teen USA Loves Dropping N-Bombs On Twitter

New Miss Teen USA Loves Dropping N-Bombs On Twitter

2016 Miss Teen USA Competition - Show

The Miss Teen USA pageant looked like a snowstorm in Las Vegas -- that's how a lot of people saw it due to a severe lack of diversity when Miss Texas Karlie Hay was crowned.

Hay was crowned Saturday night ... and viewers couldn't help but notice the top 5 were ALL blonde haired, blue eyed chicks. To be fair, it wasn't only the top 5 who looked like that.

As Chrissy Teigen put it ... "Wow how can we choose from such a diverse bunch."

To make matters worse -- almost immediately after 18-year-old Hay grabbed her tiara and bouquet, a bunch of tweets from 2013 bit her in the ass. Turns out she liked to use the n-word when referring to her friends.

The racial insensitivity had many people on social media calling for Miss Teen USA to dethrone Hay, but the pageant says it's sticking with her -- and she's sort of apologized, saying she's not proud of the language she used in the past, but says she's a "better person today."

Hay, obviously, has publically apologized.

Waitress Fired After Sharing Racist Snapchat About Black Customers

Waitress Fired After Sharing Racist Snapchat About Black Customers

On Sunday, Chelsea Mayes and four of her friends went to a Cheddar’s restaurant in Tennessee after church. At the time, they were pleased with their service and left the seemingly friendly waitress a 25 percent tip.

Later that day, one of Mayes’ friends recognized the waitress on Snapchat and discovered a photo with a startlingly racist caption.

As you can imagine, Mayes and her friends were upset when they discovered that the waitress who smiled to their faces was posting disturbing racist slurs about them on social media. Despite the cruelty of the post, Mayes took the highroad when she called out the server’s racism on Facebook.

The post was eventually picked up by the Daily News Journal, and the waitress was let go.

“We, ourselves, were shocked and offended after learning one of our servers had posted comments on social media that were hurtful and derogatory,” Lee Greer, president of Mint Julep Restaurant Management Group Inc. and owner-operator of Cheddar’s Murfreesboro, said in a statement issued to the Daily News Journal. “This type of behavior will never be tolerated in our restaurants. The server was immediately suspended and ultimately terminated after our internal investigation.”

Mayes told CNN Money that it wasn’t her intention for the waitress to get fired after responding to her Snapchat.

“I would never want to cause a hardship on anyone else,” said the 21-year-old business school student, “but at the same time there needs to be a repercussion for her action.”

It’s clear that Mayes is still understandably a little heartbroken over how someone could be so friendly to her face and so vicious behind her back.

“I’m human, so my feelings were hurt,” said Mayes. “You think that you made a connection with somebody, and to go and see what she really thinks of us was really hurtful.”

Mayes remarkably positive social media post was, in part, inspired by the 2015 death of her infant son. She ultimately decided that “life was too short” to be embroiled in anger.

In an appalling twist, a woman claiming to be the unnamed waitress’ mother contacted Mayes and admonished her for being upset.

“People are being shot by attack rifles and stabbings all over the world,” Mayes said the mother wrote, “and you are this concerned over one comment that was made by a sweet cute little blonde?”

If that cute little blonde was dropping N-bombs, how sweet could she really be?

“My response to her was that last year there were nine people shot down in South Carolina by a sweet little cute blonde,” said Mayes. “Does that make it OK?”

Although Cheddar’s fired the waitress, Mayes told the Washington Post that the place has been soured for her.

“It is my favorite restaurant,” said the cosmetologist and day care worker. “And to be honest, I don’t see myself going back.”

10 Ways You Can Legally Discriminate In The USA

10 Ways You Can Legally Discriminate In The USA

America’s come a long way. The days of keeping slaves and forbidding women from voting have come and gone. Today, the people of the land of the free can take pride in living in a country where all people are created equal, and all people enjoy the same rights.

Almost all the same rights. If you still have a few prejudiced bones in your body, you can act on them all you want—just as long as you know the right circumstances.

10.Companies Can Refuse To Hire LGBT Employees In 28 States

The Civil Rights Act forbids discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin but not sexual orientation—until last year. Which sounds like a victory, but there are conflicting reports on whether that definition trumps religious exemption laws. So, as long as a state claims religious grounds, its citizens might be able to go on firing LGBT employees.

Somebody will have to test this in court to find out which law will win out. Until then, though, a lot of people are playing it safe—so much so that it’s considered common for CEOs to come out at their retirement party.

9.The NYPD Can Discriminate Against Smart People

In 1996, a man named Robert Jordan applied to be a police officer but was rejected because of his scores—which were too high. The NYPD had set a maximum score on their test scores and set a policy of refusing anyone who did too well, worried that smart people would get “bored” with the training.

Jordan spent four years fighting it in court, but as smart as he was, he still lost. The court ruled that the NYPD had the right to refuse intelligent people—and Jordan was stuck with a job as a prison guard.

So just how smart was this super-genius? Jordan had an IQ of 125—only a couple dozen points about average, and not even high enough to get into Mensa.

8.Immigration Can Discriminate Against Children Of Unwed Parents

Having an American parent is usually enough to get a person into the country—but not if you were born out of wedlock.

Section 309 of the immigration code sets out a whole set of special rules for children of unmarried parents. A birth certificate isn’t enough. A bastard child has to get dad to swear under oath that he acknowledges the child as his own.

People have tried to get section 309 overturned, but nobody has succeeded. As far as the government of the United States is concerned, a child just isn’t the same if the parents don’t take the time to tie the knot.

7.The Boy Scouts Can Discriminate Against Atheists

The Boy Scouts are a long-standing group that take care of the welfare of children, but most people don’t realize just how old their values are. This group is deeply rooted in old traditions, a lot of which don’t really fit into today’s society.

Up until recently, the group refused leaders if they were gay. And even now, the Boy Scouts have a charter demanding the “recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe.” Over the years, this has been updated to allow people to acknowledge any god—but you still have to acknowledge one. To this day, atheists can still be excluded from the group.

6.Michigan Adoption Agencies Can Refuse Gay Couples

There’s a chance that the right to gay marriage will do a lot to help orphans. While there are alternatives, a loving couple that can’t conceive children seems a lot more likely to adopt—and so there’s a good chance we might see a lot more children finding homes as gay marriage becomes accepted.

But not in Michigan. Last year, the state passed a law allowing adoption agencies to refuse gay couples on religious grounds. The adoption agencies have to register as faith-based to take advantage of the exemption, but any group that does can turn away any same-sex couple.

5.Playboy Clubs Can Discriminate Against Ugly Women

Employees are protected in discrimination at most jobs, but there are clauses in our employment laws that let companies refuse employees for any reason that can be called a bona fide qualification. As long as they can justify it as integral to the job, they can refuse people.

Playboy’s Clubs won a lawsuit for refusing to hire girls that weren’t pretty enough for precisely this reason. The judge ruled that customers visiting a Playboy Club were expecting to be titillated by the women there, and the company won the right to refuse to hire any girl who’d make you swipe left on Tinder.

4.Teachers In Texas Can Hit Students

In Texas, school boards can give their teachers the legal right to exercise corporal punishment. Teachers in that state are free to beat little boys and girls who misbehave—or, at least, beat them within the confines of the rules set by the school board.

If a parent doesn’t want their child getting hit by an angry educator, they have to handwrite a signed statement asking the school not to hit their children. And not just once—they have to renew it every year. If mom and dad forget to send in the letter at the start of the school year, all bets are off, and the kid might be coming home with a tanned hide.

3.Senior Citizens Can’t Drive Buses

When your child steps onto the school bus each morning in America, you won’t be seeing a kindly grey-haired old retiree greeting them for the new school day. In the United States, school bus drivers are required to retire the second they turn 65.

The logic is that senior seniors are more likely to have an accident, so the government won’t trust them behind the wheel when a child’s welfare is at stake. One senior tried to fight this back in 1992, but he lost his case and was forced to quit sitting behind the wheel on the day of his 65th birthday.

2.Judges In North Carolina Can Refuse To Marry Gay Couples

Today, gay couples are free to lock themselves in the bonds of matrimony anywhere across the 50 states. But in one of those states, there’s nothing saying that the judges have to help them do it.

Shortly after equal marriage rights were introduced, the state of North Carolina ratified Senate Bill 2, which allows judges to refuse to marry gay couples on religious grounds. As long as a judge’s opposition to gay marriage is religious and “sincerely held,” he can step aside.

The law doesn’t leave couples completely in the lurch. If necessary, they will call in a judge from out of state so that the couple can still get married. Still, it’s a bit strange, because judges in the state are still legally required to fulfil every single duty of their office—except for helping gay people get married.

1.Small Companies Can Discriminate As Much As They Want

Some of these rules are pretty specific, but there’s one way you can legally go around discriminating as much as you want: by running a small business. According to US employment laws, any business with fewer than 15 employees is completely free to.

If you apply for a job at a major corporation and they tell you, “Sorry, we don’t hire black lesbian immigrants with dwarfism,” you’re in for a landfall of lawsuit money. But if it’s a small-time operation, there’s nothing you can do. US equal employment laws don’t cover any business with less than 15 people working for them.

So, don’t let that pesky Civil Rights Act stand in your way. As long as you know the right time and place, you can discriminate against anyone you want.

Twitter Isn’t Doing A Damn Thing About Racist Trolls Attacking Leslie Jones

Twitter Isn’t Doing A Damn Thing About Racist Trolls Attacking Leslie Jones

On Monday, “Ghostbusters” star Leslie Jones’ Twitter account was hit with an avalanche of horrifically racist and sexist tweets. Jones spent the better part of the day retweeting the most egregious examples.

According to the Los Angeles Times, after the actress shared the inappropriate tweets, fans reached out to Twitter demanding that the platform update and enforce its harassment policy. In the wake of Twitter’s inaction, fans started the #LoveforLeslieJ in which praise was heaped on the “SNL” comic and star of the successful “Ghostbusters” reboot. “Ghostbusters” director Paul Feig expressed his support of Jones using the hashtag.

Neither Jones nor Dorsey publicly disclosed whether they discussed her situation, but shortly after the Twitter CEO responded to Jones, she posted a distressing series of tweets implying that she was leaving the social network altogether.

On Tuesday night, Twitter finally took action regarding the racist troll campaign against “Ghostbusters” star Leslie Jones and banned Breitbart tech editor, GamerGate shithead, and alt-right troll Milo Yiannopoulos. According to BuzzFeed News, the ban is permanent, so for anyone harassed, annoyed, or disgusted by Yiannopoulos’ hateful antics, this is a “Ding, dong, the witch is dead” moment.

“People should be able to express diverse opinions and beliefs on Twitter,” a Twitter rep said. “But no one deserves to be subjected to targeted abuse online, and our rules prohibit inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others.”

NYPD Officer Releases Audio Of Captain Commanding Him To ‘Target’ Black Men

NYPD Officer Releases Audio Of Captain Commanding Him To ‘Target’ Black Men

Back in January, the New York Daily News ran a story about how NYPD officer Michael Birch was suing his superiors after they punished him for refusing to practice illegal racial profiling tactics and meet illegal quotas. In the story, Birch referenced a number of conversations in which his captain scolded him for not stopping enough black and Hispanic men. Now Birch has provided an audio recording of one of those conversations to Gawker, and it’s as bad as you’d expect.

In the secretly recorded conversation, Birch’s commanding officer can be heard berating him for not stopping enough “male blacks” while working the subway beat and attempting to writer “TABS” and “pop” people. (A tab is a summons for a transit violation; someone gets “popped” if they’re stopped for some petty infraction and it turns out they have a warrant out for their arrest.) The C.O. makes Birch affirm that black and Hispanic men commit the most crimes, then asks him why he’s not “targeting” them. Birch says “I target everybody,” and the captain reacts with disbelief that he only saw “two male blacks” jump the turnstile that year.

Throughout the clip, the captain’s implications are that 1.) black and Hispanic men commit most of the crimes in New York, therefore it’s acceptable for the police to target them, and 2.) any officer with a low proportion of black and Hispanic stops and/or arrests must be practicing some sort of reverse racism.

Commanding Officer: Who commits the crimes in the city?

Birch: Who commits the crimes? Well, it’s mostly teenagers, anywhere between the ages of 15 and 19, mostly male blacks and Hispanics.

OK. Who are you stopping?

Everybody. I stop everybody.

Fifty-four TABs up to 8/20. Twenty-five of those are female. Half.

Like I said, I stop everybody. I’m not targeting anybody.

You just told me who the bad guys are.

Yeah, I know that. But there’s also other people who are committing violations as well. I’m not saying that there’s not violations being made.

The male blacks, that you told me commit the crimes—

Plenty of people that I write summonses to are male blacks and male Hispanics.

You stopped two male blacks.

Not for the whole year. You’re telling me for the whole year I only stopped two male blacks on summonses?

8/20. From January 1st to August 20th. Fifty-four TABs: two male blacks, seven Hispanics, seven other, ten white, three Asian. So where are you targeting the perps that you just told me?

Like I said, if I don’t see a perp jumping over the turnstile, what am I supposed to do to him?

These people are not going to pop.

How do I know that? A female Hispanic that I stopped in Sheepshead Bay did pop, actually, for a warrant, and I arrested her. Female Hispanic. The Hispanics that we’re supposed to be going after. That are committing the crimes. The people that I—

Did you think that she was going to pop?

Did I think she was going to pop? I didn’t put no thought into it. If you come up for a collar, I’m taking you in.

Here’s what I see. You just described to me who’s committing the crimes. You’re fully aware of it. But you’re not targeting those people.

I am. I’m targeting everybody.

Two male blacks.

Whoever is out there. If I—

So you only saw two male blacks jump the turnstile?

If you’re saying that’s what’s in front of you, then yes, that’s all I saw, is two male blacks for the whole year jumping the turnstile. If you’re saying that’s what’s in front of you, I’m not disputing that. If that’s what I got there.

That is what you have. That is not disputed here.

I’m saying, we’re also talking Hispanics as well. I stopped a lot of Hispanics, too.

Seven male Hispanics. But more than half are female.

And like I said, everybody’s committing violations in front of me.

The identity of the commanding officer in the recording has yet to be independently confirmed, but Birch says it’s Constantin Tsachas, then captain of the transit bureau’s 32nd district. Tsachas, who has since been promoted to deputy inspector, is named in Birch’s lawsuit, along with “NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton; former commissioner Ray Kelly, who led the department at the time that Birch made his recording; and Joseph Fox, chief of the NYPD Transit Bureau.”

Of course, the pending lawsuit against Tsachas didn’t do shit to stop his promotion. In June, amid a storm of controversy surrounding said promotion, Bratton said the following about him: “I have full faith and support in him. This department does not engage in quotas and does not push its officers for activity that’s inappropriate.”

Sounds like something a racial profiler would say.

Cop Fired For Facebook Threat To 5-Year-Old Black Girl

Cop Fired For Facebook Threat To 5-Year-Old Black Girl
OP badge

On Thursday night, someone posted a chilling comment on LaNaydra Williams' Facebook page under images of her young daughter. "We'll see how much her life matters soon," the post on the Dallas woman's page read. "Better be careful leaving your info open where she can be found :) Hold her close tonight it'll be the last time." The comment was eventually deleted, but Williams took a picture of it and linked it to its source: a police officer in Overland Park, Kansas, the Kansas City Star reports.

By end of day Friday, the Overland Park PD had investigated the incident and fired the officer, IDed by the New York Daily News as Rodney Lee Wilson, and it says that a criminal investigation is also in progress.

The warning was apparently a Black Lives Matter reference made after last week's Dallas police shooting that left five cops dead. But Williams says she doesn't know anyone in Kansas, let alone Wilson, and she has no clue how he came across her page and decided to threaten 5-year-old India. WDAF did discover the profile picture on her Facebook account had been of a person dressed in black holding a knife to a police officer's throat; Williams concedes Facebook has since deleted her account.

Williams says she appreciates Wilson has been terminated, as well as the apology offered by Chief Francis Donchez when he called her personally to deliver the news—but she says "it's not OK," adding, "She's all I have. India is my heart."

Is Going BatShit Crazy And Screaming At Reporters A Bad Look For Black Lives Matter?

Is Going BatShit Crazy And Screaming At Reporters A Bad Look For Black Lives Matter?

On Saturday night, some 300 Black Lives Matter protesters, responding to the police shooting deaths of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, shut down traffic for hours on Interstate 94, one of the main highways running between St. Paul and Minneapolis. Dozens were arrested around 11:00 pm when police began pushing a wall of protesters off the Interstate after giving the sixteenth order to vacate the area.

Video taken earlier in the evening shows a local reporter (for Fox News affiliate KMSP as identified by Reddit) trying to interview protesters at the scene. Their response isn’t exactly congenial.

Many people’s reaction to this video would be to criticize the protesters. Here you have a reporter asking why protesters are here, giving them the opportunity to spread their message, and their response is to shout him down with a megaphone and demand he leave. How does this help the BLM cause? Why are the protesters responding so angrily?

If you’re asking why they are so angry, ask yourself if you’ve been seriously paying attention to what’s happening to black people in this country. The idea that people who are literally being killed in the street by the state shouldn’t respond with anger or aggression — that their cause and method of protest are only legitimate if they are docile — is at best erroneous and at worst indicatively racist.

Protesters aren’t viewing this reporter as a neutral party looking to signal boost their message, much less an ally. The media doesn’t have the best track record of reporting on police violence or protest movements without a narrative heavily favoring the state and white supremacy. This goes double for Fox News (if this is, in fact, a reporter for KMSP). You can hear this alluded to by protesters when they counter the reporter’s questions with “Why are youhere?” and “You’re with them.”

BLM has become a social and political force in this country because of its own groundwork and organizing. It’s understandably not a top priority for all of its members to work with a mainstream media that often reports on the movement disingenuously. The media is, after all, primarily interested in the story. Black Lives Matter is paramountly interested in the complete and total liberation of black people. The story will be reported on regardless. Protesters may feel they have better things to spend their time and energy on than facilitating a narrative they ultimately will not have any control over. It’s not a novel or terribly misguided position to take. Indeed, KMSP’s eventual coverage of the protest did heavily favor the police perspective. You could argue this is because of protesters’ caustic reactions to the reporter, but if his work was so easily swayed by having his feelings hurt, his commitment to journalistic integrity is tenuous.

There is a true risk with combative tactics that you end up alienating people. Many will look at this young woman screaming in the face of a seemingly calm and innocent reporter and respond with disgust. It will confirm their worst notions and feelings about BLM. You can see as much in the comments accompanying the video on Reddit and YouTube. Instead of focusing on the protesters’ “bad manners,” I focus on the words of the people turned off by them.

Jesse Williams brought down the house at the BET Awards Sunday, with a powerful indictment of police brutality and racism in America.

People Are Very Angry With This Allegedly Racist Red Cross Marketing Poster That Has Since Been Recalled

So the American Red Cross recently distributed a pool safety poster titled ‘Be Cool, Follow the Rules’ that depicts the dos and don’ts of public pool etiquette. It shows children playing in and around the pool with signs pointing saying ‘cool’ and ‘not cool’ in an attempt to distinguish what is acceptable and what is forbidden.

Since being distributed to pools in Colorado, the American Red Cross has recalled the posters after a Twitter storm deemed it racist. They cite that the ‘not cool’ arrows are almost entirely assigned to the actions of the black children, where as the white kids are cool as a cucumber.

While the poster was likely not created with malicious intention or to make a racial statement, Red Cross has to understand that shit can snowball on social media. As a large company, you have to treat everything you do like a game of Operation. You gotta be a Boy Scout.

Whether for better or worse, we’ve reached a day and age where you have to ask yourself ‘Am I being racist?’ ‘Am I being insensitive?’ Which has merit in that it promotes racial empathy and understanding, but this landscape can also be dangerous for people who really aren’t racist. Because even though it’s probable that the illustrator didn’t KNOW he was being racist until Twitter trolls told him he was and even though it’s likely that a humanitarian organization aimed at providing emergency services for all isn’t a racist entity, there are no exceptions in the racial sensitivity game. You’ve got to try not to be racist in order to not be racist. You’ve got to stop and wait for the rest of us. By people calling Red Cross ‘racist’ online, what they’re really saying is ‘we’re not ready for this.’ I hope that in my lifetime we can look at a pool poster for what it is: a fucking pool poster with some kids behaving and others acting like shitheads. Not there yet. Evidently, not even close.

Decently Racist Dude From Tennessee Posted A “Make America White Again” Political Billboard

Politics is a dirty game. Once climb into that ring, there really are no rules. This especially goes when trying to make yourself stand out. When you think about it, politics is mostly full of decently educated, middle-aged white men who probably drink too much whiskey and would rather hit on the cocktail waitress than compliment their wife. If we crunched some numbers, I have a funny feeling we would find that about 98% of politicians fit this description. So, really, if you’re serious about getting into politics, you have to adopt a shock-and-awe campaign to stand out from the crowd. Like this dude in Tennessee who ran on the platform of ‘Make America White Again’.

“A campaign sign in Polk County is stirring up a lot of controversy. The signs were located off Highway 411 near Benton, and said “Make America White Again.” They were posted by Rick Tyler, an independent candidate in the race for Tennessee’s 3rd congressional district seat currently held by Chuck Fleischmann. Another billboard depicted the White House ringed with Confederate flags, with the statement “I Have a Dream” a takeoff from the famous Martin Luther King Jr. speech.

Tyler told Channel 3 he has no hatred in his heart for “people of color.” He says the sign’s message is that America should go back to a “1960s, Ozzie and Harriet, Leave it to Beaver time when there were no break-ins; no violent crime; no mass immigration.”

Several Channel 3 viewers have called or sent messages to our newsroom, saying the signs do not reflect the feelings of the entire county and that they want them down. Tyler said, “I respect their right to have an opinion. I believe the majority of the people in the county like it.”

“I saw people taking pictures beside it right after I posted it,” added Tyler.

Channel 3 asked Tyler if he feared for his safety or backlash from the campaign sign. He said, “I don’t fear it. I welcome it, and I will respond with the application of truth.” Tyler said on Wednesday he had been receiving death threats. Tyler posted a second sign on Highway 64 with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” quote written over a White House surrounded by Confederate Flags. The sign was taken down less than 12 hours after being put up, but not by Tyler. Even so, that was enough time to get the public’s attention and cause some controversy. The owner of the billboard will not confirm if or why his company removed the signage. Tyler wants it to be put back up, he said he paid for the signs to be there until after the November election.

“If I could I’d have hundreds of these billboards up across the 3rd District,” he said.

Party officials and elected officials are speaking out against the signs. Tennessee Republican Party Chairman Ryan Haynes said in a statement, “There’s no room for this type of hateful display in our political discourse. Racism should be rejected in all its heinous forms in the Third Congressional District and around the country.”

Today, Congressman Chuck Fleischmann also released a statement regarding the billboards.

“I totally and unequivocally condemn the billboard and Mr. Tyler’s message and will vigorously fight any form of racism in the 3rd district of Tennessee or anywhere else in the nation,” said Fleischmann.”

Powermove referencing Martin Luther King Jr. on a poster advocating for the White House to hang the Confederate Flags? Maybe, but it’s marketing campaigns like this that are going to get people talking about you when they hit the polls. Sure, it’s really really racist and like you totally can’t say that in public, but everyone’s going to remember this guy. Mostly because he tries to explain that he’s not racist by saying that he yearns for the old days where segregation was still legal, only white people were famous and there was no crime. Which in itself is probably one of the most racist things I’ve ever heard. “I’m not racist but I really miss the old days where only white people were allowed basic human privileges.” Listen, if nothing else, this guy is the only person running under this banner, so he locked down the racist vote in Tennessee. He knows his audience and how to play to the forgotten voter. Those are signs of an excellent politician. No word yet on how many people will just vote for him in the voting booth simply because they forgot everyone else’s name, but I have money on more than you would expect.

Below are a collection of Rick Tyler approved messages, a racist politician starter kit.
