Chicago K-9 Praised After Making $10 Million Pot Bust

Chicago police are praising a very good dog, after a K-9 from south suburban Matteson helped officers make a $10 million pot bust last week.

Officers with the CPD narcotics unit pulled over a vehicle Thursday night in Midlothian, as part of an ongoing organized crime investigation.

Jayda, a police dog from Matteson, smelled drugs in a vehicle and trailer, and investigators ended up seizing more than 1,500 pounds of marijuana. Police also recovered other cannabis products and paraphernalia from the vehicle. Police said the vehicle had just arrived in the area from California.

Police posted pictures of the dog and its bounty on Facebook, and the post has been shared more than 5,000 times.

The photos show bags of marijuana piled high in an evidence room.

The driver, 42-year-old Jason Tanner of Lakehead, Calif., was charged with possession of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana.

Tanner’s bail was set at $50,000 on Friday. He was being held at Cook County Jail on Monday, and was due back in court on July 10.

Chicago police said they are still investigating the case with the help of DEA agents in California.
