The former treasurer of an Ohio church was sentenced to five years in prison after confessing that he had stolen some $800,000 from the church and spent the money on drugs, pornography, and “high-end escorts.”
Garry Meyer admitted that he embezzled the congregation’s money over the course of 14 years working as the treasurer of the Tri-County Baptist Church in West Chester Township, Ohio. Meyer allegedly confessed once his wife discovered the crime. Before that, he spent over a decade taking lavish trips to Florida and blowing through the church’s money by exercising a majority of the seven deadly sins all at once.
The theft came to light last fall, although at the time, the sum Meyer made off with was thought to be roughly $400,000. Now it seems it was twice that amount.
At his sentencing, Meyer said “There is no excuse for my actions,” and apologized for the pain he caused his family.
The real tragedy, however, is not the theft itself, but the horrible lack of further, lurid details.
