Clinton Says She ‘Short-Circuited’ Answering Email Questions

The ongoing he-said-she-said-the-FBI-said situation surrounding Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server has gotten pretty confusing, perhaps no more so than for the candidate herself. Last Sunday, Clinton claimed FBI director James Comey “said my answers were truthful and what I’ve said is consistent with what I have told the American people,” CBS News reports. She reiterated that claim Wednesday. Since then, multiple fact-checkers have called her claim an outright lie. Comey has only said the FBI has no proof Clinton lied to them; he said he couldn’t say if she lied to the public about possibly sending classified information through her private email.

On Friday, Clinton tried to explain her claim, saying she may have “short-circuited” during her answers to questions on Sunday and Wednesday, Politico reports. Fox News called it a “difficult-to-follow” attempt to clarify things. “I have said … that what I told the FBI, which he said was truthful, is consistent with what I have said publicly,” Clinton said, adding: “Having him say that my answers to the FBI were truthful—and then I should quickly add what I said was consistent with what I had said publicly, and that’s really in my view trying to tie both ends together.” Basically, she said she meant that the things Comey said were true from her talk with the FBI were what she told the public. Republicans weren’t having it, with the Trump campaign calling her explanation “pretzel-like.”
