Cop Daniel Holtzclaw Convicted Of Rape, Sentenced To Life In Prison

Former Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Holtzclaw has been convicted of sexually assaulting 13 women. He will most likely spend the rest of his life in prison.

Over the course of the trial, a horrifying picture emerged of Holtzclaw using his status as a cop to assault and intimidate at least 13 black women living in one of Oklahoma City’s poorest neighborhoods. He chose his victims for their criminal records and counted on the fact that women with open warrants or previous convictions for drugs or prostitution would be too scared to report his crimes.

BuzzFeed has the full testimony of the victims, and it’s truly sickening to read. Here is one such story from a 17-year-old girl identified solely as “A”:

They were on A.’s mom’s porch when Holtzclaw allegedly told her he had to search her. He allegedly groped her underneath her clothes and inserted his fingers into her genitalia.

I was in shock. I was thinking like ‘What’s going on? Why would he be doing this?’ He said, ‘You got warrants. I don’t want to have to take you to jail. I don’t want to make this any harder than it has to be.’ Something like that. I don’t remember exactly.

I was in trouble. Like this was bad.

‘This is what you’re going to have to do.’ That’s what he said.

She testified that Holtzclaw then exposed his penis through his fly and raped her.

I told him I didn’t even want to do it before he pulled my drawers down, but it was too late.

Afterward Holtzclaw allegedly told A., “I might be back to see you later.”

Holtzclaw’s reign of terror came to an end after a 57-year-old grandmother he assaulted in June of 2014 bravely reported him to the very same police force that employed him. Sex crimes detective Kim Davis began to investigate and discovered a systematic pattern of abuse of women ranging in age from 17 to 57. Both DNA evidence and GPS logs from Holtzclaw’s police vehicle backed up many of the victims’ claims.

Like many had successfully done before him, Holtzclaw’s attorney tried to impugn the credibility of the victims and rely on unspoken race and class biases in the all-white jury, a bias he hoped would predispose them to believe one half-white, half-Japanese police officer over a number of economically disadvantaged black women. Unlike others before him, he did not succeed. The jury convicted Holtzclaw of 18 of the 36 charges and recommended a total of 263 years of prison time. “We’re going to ask the judge to make sure that this defendant never sees the light of day,” said District Attorney David Prater. “And we’re going to ask him to run consecutive, every count.”

Of course, it bears mentioning that for every Daniel Holtzclaw who gets convicted and locked up for life, an uncounted number of police officers get away with similar crimes. Locking up a single abuser does little to change the widespread pattern of racism, misogyny, and police violence in this country. Still, it’s delightful to watch Holtzclaw break down in tears as the verdict is read out loud. Even more so when you find out it was his birthday.
