Right this second, take a look at your right hand. Is your index finger shorter than your ring finger?

For those of you who are not sure which finger is which, here’s a handy photo.

For those of you who have a longer ring finger than index finger, congratulations you big-dicked stud! A study published in the Asian Journal of Andrology from 2011 suggested that men with shorter index fingers in relation to their ring fingers were more likely to have a larger penis. The study was carried out on 144 men aged 20 years and older who underwent urological surgery at Gachon University Hospital in Incheon, South Korea.

Longer ring finger length compared to the index finger is known to scientists as the 2D:4D ratio and has also been linked to fertility, sexuality, promiscuity and attractiveness.

Men who have a shorter index finger than ring finger are said to have more attractive face. A 2011 study published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B alleges that the testosterone in the fetus can affect how the individual’s face develops, and how attractive that face is.

Longer ring fingers may even help men become wealthy. Academics at Canada’s Concordia University measured finger lengths and personality differences among 415 men and women for the journal Personality and Individual Differences. Their findings suggested that men with longer ring fingers were more likely to be alpha males who subscribed to the “Work hard, play hard” mantra. They were more likely to take risks and had more potential to amass wealth. They were also more likely to be fit, rich and assertive, thus more appealing to women who covet those characteristics.

“What’s interesting is this tendency is influenced by testosterone exposure – more testosterone in the womb can lead to more risks in the rink, the bar and the trading floor in later in life,” said researcher Eric Stenstrom.

The finger differential can even be a factor in a man’s libido, from the International Business Times:

A new study reported sex hormone exposure in the womb determines finger length. Published in this week’s issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers studied digit length in mice, which are considered to have similar digit ratios as human males and females.

After exposing the mouse embryo to more male hormones, the mouse had a significantly longer fourth digit. More estrogen resulted in a smaller fourth digit. Almost all of the male mice in this group had genital defects.

Professor Martin Cohn and Dr. Zhengui Zheng, biologists at the University of Florida, say the fourth finger is packed with receptors for sex hormones.

Sex hormones affect finger length, and the ratio is fixed before the bone has even developed, Cohn said. This happens during a narrow window of development, but it stays fixed throughout life.

For you gentlemen with a longer index finger don’t despair because there is one huge benefit, you have a much lower chance of developing prostate cancer. Dr. Denise Brooks McQuade, professor of biology at Skidmore College in N.Y, found that the more testosterone a fetus is exposed to in the womb, they will be subjected to an increased risk for hormone-driven diseases like prostate cancer. “Digit ratio is non-invasive and easy to measure, yet may provide clues about an individual’s prenatal history.” McQuade told Reuters. “Combined with other information, digit ratio offers the potential for clinical usefulness.”

And penis size, wealth and attractiveness is overrated anyways. Right?
