Domestic Violence Victim Shares Brutal Pics to Spread Awareness
Kelsie Skillen is sharing her domestic abuse story online, including pictures after the attack, after her ex-boyfriend beat the living hell out of her for not giving him a cigarette.
James McCourt asked Skillen for a cigarette when they were hanging out in their flat. When Skillen refused McCourt took her keys and cell phone before locking the front door. He told her “You’re going to have a bruised face tomorrow so I better do it right,” before he spit on her and started attacking her. He punched and bit Skillen as she fell in and out of consciousness.
Skillen was able to finally contact her mother between beatings and was able to get the police to show up to arrest McCourt.
Skillen shared her story “During the incident I kept saying ‘Is it worth going to jail?’ and he said ‘I don’t care if I go to jail as long as you’re dead’.”
Their fight started after a night out at the bar, McCourt had accidentally left his jacket behind with his cigarettes. After realizing what had happened he blamed Skillen.
“He said it was my fault, I had left his jacket, then he just flipped and grabbed me and attacked me,” She said.
“He had his knees oh my chest so I couldn’t get up and was punching me.”
McCourt had hid all the phones and computers in the house before the beating, but when he went to the bathroom Skillen was able to find an iPad and contact her mother. She said “My iPad only had two per cent battery so I had to be quick, I was panicking and managed to get in touch with my mum.”
It didn’t take much longer for the police to arrive on the scene.
According to a study by Living Without Abuse (LWA.org) as many as one in four women will experience some form of domestic abuse in their lifetime, and one in six men. Domestic abuse accounts for approximately 16 per cent of all violent crime globally. Add to that the fact that most cases of domestic violence go unreported, and it feels like the problem is an insurmountable one, a vicious cycle of pain and apathy that makes needless victims out of innocent people.
McCourt plead guilty to prolonged assault and detaining someone against their will. He was also charged with threatening behavior during their taxi drive away from the bar that day. McCourt was sentenced to 21 months of jail and 8 months of probation after release. He also granted a life long restraining order for Skillen.
After posting all these pictures on Facebook Skillen wrote
“Sorry for the graphic pictures but as alot of you may know that in june my ex boyfriend JAMES MCCOURT basically locked me in our house for 4 hours and battered me repeatedly to the extent i was hospitalized. As u can see mostly kept hitting my face , today was the court case and he was found guilty for everything he done to me , i am also now left with a scar .. I’m purely just puttin this out there so everyone knows what hes like considering some people are still tryin to defend him and others are believing he is being sentenced for something else as that’s what he’s obviously going to tell people , and I would never be able to forgive myself if I didn’t tell people about this and another poor girl ended up in my situation , so thanks to everyone who came to support me today and who has supported me this full way it means alot , and just to clear it up on this for some twisted people I never touched him ????!!! People clearly can’t just accept that he’s guilty.”
