Drunk Driver In China Attempts To Trick Cops Into Thinking Breathalyzer Is Broken

A Chinese man is gaining fans for all the wrong reasons after a video of him trying to game a breathalyzer test made its way onto YouTube.

A 33-year-old driver named Xu was pulled over at a sobriety checkpoint in Shenzhen City in China’s Guangdong Province. That evening, he’d had three glasses of wine “at a reunion dinner with his schoolmates” and was afraid he’d be over the legal limit. So he did what any drunk would do in his situation: He tried to outsmart the cops by pretending to blow into the breathalyzer, then acting all confused when it failed to produce a reading.

As the video shows, Xu pretended many times to blow into the cops’ booze-o-meter, throwing up his hands each time as if to say, “It’s not this totally sober man’s fault if your equipment’s not working.” “Do you know how to blow a balloon?” asked a police officer. “It’s [blowing into breathalyzer] similar to that. I don’t believe you have blown a balloon so hard.”

Eventually, the jig was up. He blew a reading of “190 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milligrams of blood, higher than the country’s legal limit,” at which point he was detained. He is likely to be penalized with a fine, jail time, and eternal viral infamy.
