When a group of geniuses including Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, Noam Chomsky, and Steve Wozniak band together to tell us anything, we should probably pay attention. When they’re warning us about the inevitability of human obsolescence in war, and the rise AI-powered machines, we should probably either run for the hills or go back to fighting with sticks and stones to avoid the takeover of our malevolent robot overlords.

The Future of Life Institute (FLI) just released an open letter, urging the UN to ban “offensive autonomous weapons”—and the future scenario they point to looks pretty much just like every Terminator/Neil Blomkamp movie we’ve ever seen. Which is a pretty scary thought.

The group is most concerned about an “AI arms race,” which could lead to cheap robot weapons falling into the wrong hands and an increase of conflicts between nations because of the “lower threshold for going to battle,” if human lives aren’t at stake. All the while, by 2030 it’s predicted that humans will be the “weakest component in a wide array of systems,” setting us up for total domination by the machines.

Let’s get this straight. Robot weapons used by bad guys, wars where only robots die (giving them a reason to hate us), and super-smart, incredibly powerful robot armies roaming the globe? Are they trying to make Skynet? Because this is how you get Skynet, guys. Personally, I’m going to get a phone book, and start looking up everyone named “Sarah Connor,” right now.

ELON MUSK AND STEPHEN HAWKING ARE TERRIFIED THAT AI ROBOT WARS WILL ACTUALLY HAPPEN
