Elon Musk Makes Potentially Costly April Fools’ Day Joke

Yesterday was 1 April and there was the usual gang of people and, increasingly, companies attempting to catch people out with an April Fools’ joke.

However, Elon Musk’s Tesla banter may have backfired and left him out of pocket.

Musk took to Twitter to say that his car company had gone bust – maybe a bit of a risky joke to make given that the company has actually lost almost a quarter of its value in the past month.

In a post, Musk wrote that the company was ‘so bankrupt, you can’t believe it’.

Before a follow-up post added: “There are many chapters of bankruptcy and, as critics so rightly pointed out, Tesla has them *all*, including Chapter 14 and a half (the worst one).”

He eventually let everyone in on the joke, by posting a photo of himself looking worse for wear holding a sign saying ‘bankwupt’ and writing, ‘Happy New Month!’

All a bit of harmless first of April fun, right? Except, according to the Metro, following the post pre-trading shares dropped by 2.5 percent. So, maybe not so funny after all?

Tesla has had such a rough time of late that many social media users wondered if this was, in fact, Musk’s way of breaking the news that the company had gone bust.

Just last week, Moody’s Investors Service downgraded the company’s credit rating, based on a number of production issues which have plagued the car manufacturer, and said that the company may need to raise more than $2billion to avoid running out of cash.

It’s also currently under investigation by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) after a fatal accident involved one of its vehicles in California last month.

On Saturday, Tesla confirmed that the car’s autopilot feature was on during the accident on 23 March, but that the driver had ‘ignored repeated visual and audio warnings’ and that his hands had not been detected on the wheel for six seconds before the crash.
