Facebook Is SO Sorry It Let People Sell Guns, Drugs, Baby Hedghogs

Facebook has issued an apology after a new feature called “Marketplace” resulted in a burst of illegal and/or hilarious listings.

As reported by a number of tech publications, Facebook launched “Marketplace” as a Craigslist-esque forum to buy and sell things, bolstered by the ability to search for items locally and see how many friends you have in common with the seller. Of course, the internet being what it is, it wasn’t long before it was invaded by people claiming to sell drugs, guns, sex, live animals, human beings, and imaginary things like their souls. Because what’s the point of having technocratic overlords if you can’t use their own inventions to clown them?

It wasn’t long before Facebook issued a statement, blaming the posts on a “technical issue” and saying they’re working to get a better system of vetting the listings before letting any more people use the service.

Via Quartz:

Facebook’s director of product management, Mary Ku, told Quartz in a statement that Marketplace initially encountered a technical issue which prevented its automated reviewing system from flagging posts that violated their commerce policies.

“We are working to fix the problem and will be closely monitoring our systems to ensure we are properly identifying and removing violations before giving more people access to Marketplace,” she explained. “We apologize for this issue.”

Of course, people have long sold illicit items on Facebook, from unlicensed guns to all the drugs people have been dumb enough to buy/sell using the social media network; at least this problem is more centralized. It’s tough to regulate what everyone on a social channel is doing when a billion people sign in every day.

Let this be a lesson to anyone who still didn’t get it after trolls turned Microsoft’s Twitter bot into a Hitler-loving sex slave in just 24 hours: Whatever can happen on the internet, will happen on the internet.
