Russia has initiated a merciless offensive against ISIS militants in Syria. Vladimir Putin has flexed his military muscles for the world to see with aerial assaults by Russian bombers and launched cruise missiles from naval warships.

Su-34 bombers have taken air superiority in Syria, and have whipped out numerous ISIS strongholds with the assistance of Kalibr cruise missiles fired from the Caspian and Mediterranean Seas. “On November 20, warships of the Caspian Flotilla have launched 18 cruise missiles on seven [terrorist] targets in the provinces of Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo. All targets were destroyed,” Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said in a report to president Vladimir Putin. Over the past four days, Russian air forces have conducted 522 sorties, deploying more than 100 cruise missiles and 1,400 tons of bombs of various types, Shoigu stated. He added that one particular cruise missile strike on a target in Deir ez-Zor killed more than 600 militants.

On Friday, Moscow said that they had destroyed 23 jihadists training camps, 19 plants producing explosives, 47 ammunition depots, as well as many other targets. Russia also announced that 15 Syrian oil facilities that were seized by ISIS had been destroyed and 525 of their trucks were obliterated. “We stopped supplies of 60,000 tons of oil per day to the black market and terrorists are losing $1.5 million daily,” Shoigu said.

There are ten warships taking part in the operation, six of which are in the Mediterranean. Moscow has doubled the number of bombers assigned to Syria from 34 two weeks ago to 69 by Saturday, Nov. 21.

Russia has ramped up their of military campaign against Daesh after it was revealed that an Islamic State operative took down a Russian Metrojet airliner and killed 224 people leaving from Egypt on Oct. 31. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack that destroyed the plane with a bomb that was allegedly hidden in a pineapple soda can. “We should pursue them without any statute of limitations and should know all of them by name. We will be looking for them wherever they would try to hide. We will find them in any part of the world and punish them,” Putin said.

The Russian defense ministry shared photos of Russian technicians loading bombs on the Tupolev 95 bombers and they wrote “For our people,” and “That’s for Paris” on them.
