Jamie Gilt, the gun-loving Florida mom who was shot in the back by her four-year-old son and learned nothing, has been slapped with a second-degree misdemeanor charge for failure to properly secure her gun. She has currently not been arrested as the State Attorney’s Office is deciding whether to file additional charges. If convicted she could face 180 days in jail.

Gilt was shot through the gut by her son on March 8 as he rode unsecured in the back seat of the pickup truck she was driving. Gilt, a vocal proponent of gun rights who frequently wrote about shootin’ stuff on her (since deleted) firearms-focused Facebook page, had only hours before posted that her four-year-old “gets jacked up to target shoot the .22″ — though, the gun he actually shot her with was a .45.

Until now, the circumstances under which the child had accessed the gun were unclear, but according to the sheriff, “it had been placed under the driver’s seat of the pickup truck and was not in a holster.” At some point, the gun slid to the back seat, where the boy picked it up and fired it.

“We verified she’s legal to own the gun, and she possessed a concealed weapons permit,” said Capt. Joe Wells. “The child was looking for a toy he lost. It could be that he found (the gun) by looking for the toy.”

We can’t say for certain why the boy might have thought a gun was a toy, but it might be because his mother referred to her guns as “toys” she got “to play with” according to multiple Twitter and Facebook posts.
