HAND-CRANKED INSTRUMENT USES 2,000 MARBLES TO MAKE AWESOME MUSIC – THE WINTERGATAN MARBLE MACHINE

sd[1]

The Wintergartan Marble Machine, built by Swedish musician Martin Molin, is a hand-made music box that powers a kick drum, bass, vibraphone and other instruments using a hand crank and 2,000 marbles. The machine has to be seen to be appreciated: with dozens of beautifully carved wooden parts, tracks, pulleys and funnels for collecting and rerouting spent marble.

An awesome and mezmerising machine. I can’t fathom how long it took to design and build, much less how it works.

It’s a xylophone controlled by a music box type drum that’s made of a lego belt with studs. There’s a marble return system on a belt.

The motive section has a flywheel. and brake.

The grate under the xylophone probably agitates the marbles.

Cymbals are real. Most of the rest of the percussion set if digital/synthesised.

The base is struck by marbles, but the chords are set by hand.
