How Porn In The 90s Changed The Way The Internet Got Policed

Thanks to Congress’s reaction to porn on the internet back in the 1990s, we have Section 230, which gives platforms like Google, Facebook and Twitter immunity from responsibility for content posted by others.

Free speech doesn’t mean freedom to lie without consequences. It’s even more tricky when the liars get to determine what the truth is, or when different liars in different jurisdictions have different truths.

230 or not, it will all come down to a combination of (a) sites will have to choose what sets of rules to participate in, and get banned in other countries and (b) advertising aggregators like Google will decide if you get any adrev and their spiders and AIs will police your content.
