The US is the only first-world country that commercializes bail. The for-profit industry rakes in more than $2 billion annually in revenue. Most criminal defendants can’t pay the full bail amount and must either stay in jail or pay a 10 percent fee to secure a bond, which they won’t recoup even if found not guilty.

Just as I judge a company by the standard of its staff toilets, I judge a county by the way it treats its poor and downtrodden. America, you are faking your people. It surprises me that your poor aren’t doing more to do whatever it takes to get the heck out of the country. Failing that, why aren’t they taking up arms?
