Over the weekend, 20-year-old Michael Steven Sandford was arrested at a Donald Trump event in Las Vegas after attempting to grab a police officer’s gun and assassinate the candidate. Sandford, now in custody, is facing up to 10 years in prison and is due back in court July 5.

The Mirror spoke to Sandford’s parents, who said their son “has never shown any violent tendencies before” and has “never been a bad person.”

“He’s a nice kid and literally wouldn’t hurt a fly,” they added. “He used to tell us not to use fly spray because he didn’t want any flies to die.”

Sandford’s parents believe their son, who has Asperger’s and obsessive compulsive disorder, may have been blackmailed or “put up to it.” They said they’d had trouble contacting him over the last few months, and had been trying to convince him to come back to England.

“He has no interest in politics, the world, geography or anything,” they said. “He’s not a typical teenager because he doesn’t drink or smoke or do drugs. He’s never had any interest in that.”

While Sandford told police he had been living out of his car, Facebook photos of his bedroom back home in Britain show walls decked out in camouflage and fake foliage cover, with nearly a dozen replica assault weapons hanging from the wall. Opposing walls are plastered with photos and posters of action movies like “Van Helsing” and “Underworld, “as well as video games like “Tomb Raider.”
