Kanye West Threatens To Boycott The Grammys If Frank Ocean Isn’t Nominated

Kanye West stopped his performance in Oakland on Saturday night to talk about a number of topics,  and his speech included a threat to skip the next Grammy Awards if Frank Ocean’s “Blonde” doesn’t receive any nominations.

Due to some bureaucratic nonsense, Ocean’s newest album is ineligible to be nominated because somebody didn’t file the paperwork on time. It’s nonsense, because being able to submit paperwork really doesn’t have an affect on the overall quality of the art. Kanye had a thing or two to say about that.

“So, you know they didn’t but his album in the Grammy nominations, right?” West asks the crowd. He talks about how a number of years ago Lady Gaga was asked to perform at the Grammys even though she wasn’t nominated, “so the Grammys secretly changed something about the nominations so in order to nominate her, in order for her to perform at the show.”

Kanye laments that nobody seems to be doing anything about Ocean’s pleas to let him slide.

“The album that I listen to the most this year is Frank Ocean’s album,” West said. “And I’ll tell you what, I’ll tell you this right now: If his album is not nominated in no categories, I’m not showing up to the Grammys.”

The crowd seems to like this deal, so now it’s just a matter of whether or not The Recording Academy is willing to see one of music’s most recognizable names and personalities skip out on their big night because they care too much about timely filing. Considering the academy has always had nonsensical rules about nominations — leading to artists winning “Best New Artist” awards years after their debut — it seems like a good idea to let this one go.
