Video footage has emerged of the moment a crowd of people in Walthamstow, London, lifted a double-decker bus off a trapped unicyclist.
Up to 100 people rushed to help the man, who has been left in a serious condition in hospital, following the accident in Hoe Street on Thursday evening, the Evening Standard reported.
The crowd managed to slightly lift the 12-tonne bus and move it off the man before he was treated by the emergency services, Sky News reported.
Off-duty paramedic manager Stephen Hines was the first medic on scene, the Independent reported. He told the newspaper the unicyclist had already been removed by the time he arrived.
“When I got there the patient was already out from under the bus and members of public said they had freed him by lifting the bus. It was definitely a great help to me as it meant I could start treating him straight away,” he said.
Eyewitness Kyra Sam also told the Standard: “I’m really amazed at the strength of Walthamstow – no one hesitated to push the bus off, I was in shock.”
“Everyone really came together to help – it was really nice to see that in the face of something so awful.”
Police said no arrests had been made following the collision.
“Police were called at 5.50pm to a bus in collision with a unicyclist in Hoe Street, E17,” the Metropolitan police said in a statement.
“The male unicyclist was taken by ambulance to an east London hospital where his condition is believed to be serious.”

okay- start by saying it is nice people helped, and I hope the poor man is okay. A bystander said his leg and his dreads were caught and he was in a horrible state. Which meant that one Guardian comment made me laugh- ‘Dreads, Unicycle- are we SURE this was an accident?’
