Man Distracted By Electronic Device Falls To His Death From Cliff

A 33-year-old fell to his death from a San Diego cliff Christmas day because he was too busy looking at his phone or camera to watch where he was going.

According to NBC 7 San Diego, Joshua M. Burwell, who surely had a worse Christmas than you, took a stroll along Sunset Cliffs a little before 5 p.m. to watch the sunset. Unfortunately, he was so focused on getting the Instagram filter just right on his #sunsetselfie that he accidentally walked off the edge of a cliff, plunging some 60 feet. Via NBC 7:

“Witnesses stated seeing someone distracted by an electronic device and he just fell over the edge,” said San Diego Lifeguard Bill Bender. “(He) wasn’t watching where he was walking, he was looking down at the device in his hands.”

Some good Samaritans who’d seen him fall sprang into action, climbing down the cliff themselves to perform CPR on the man. Unfortunately, their efforts were fruitless and Burwell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bender was quick to warn others not to let the same fate befall them:

“Just like driving and using a cell phone, you don’t want to be walking and using a cell phone or be distracted or anything,” Bender said.

Let this be a lesson to the rest of you: If you fall off a cliff and die with an electronic device in your hand in San Diego, Lifeguard Bill Bender will be quick to turn your tragic death into a cautionary tale on the dangers of texting and twilight cliff strolling. Which will be fair.
