Man Tries To Snort Cocaine During Traffic Stop

A driver who was pulled over by police Tuesday night only made matters worse — a lot worse — by trying to snort cocaine during the traffic stop, Seattle police said.

The 73-year-old man was pulled over about 8:30 p.m. near Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Massachusetts Street after Officer Nic Abts-Olsen spotted him driving without his lights on, police said.

After checking the man’s license and registration, Abts-Olsen walked back to the man’s Toyota just in time to see him pouring cocaine from a small glass vial, according to police.

Abts-Olsen knocked on the driver’s window, startling the man and causing him to spill cocaine on his hands and the floor of the Toyota, police said.

“Are you kidding?” Abts-Olsen asked the man, who initially denied having cocaine, police said. The man claimed he had only “vitamins,” according to police.

The man eventually admitted that he had been snorting cocaine in the middle of the traffic stop, police said.

Abts-Olsen told the man he had planned to only issue him a warning because of his otherwise clean driving record. But the cocaine changed the complexion of things, police said.

Officers arrested the man and booked him into the King County Jail for investigation of drug possession.

The encounter was captured on the officer’s in-car video.
