American military officials have confirmed that missiles were fired at a group of U.S. warships as they sailed through the Red Sea last night.

An unknown number of surface-to-surface rockets were shot at the USS Mason, USS Nitze and USS Ponce at around 7.30pm (GMT) last night forcing the ship to take defensive measures.

One defence official explained the situation:

We are aware of the reports and we are assessing the situation. All of our ships and crews are safe and unharmed.

The Daily Star reports that the attacks have come at a time when tensions are running high between the U.S. and Yemen Houthi rebels, although they admit that the rebel’s involvement hasn’t been confirmed.

The attack marks the first time in nearly 30 years that U.S. warships have been attacked by missiles.

America’s keen to not get embroiled in another war in the Middle East after conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq but if the attacks are confirmed it marks a worrying escalation in the unstable region.

The missile attacks come on the back of several high profile incidents which has led to speculation that the world is on the precipice of some kind of global conflict.
