On Saturday, the deputy chief minister of the state of Sabah told reporter that he believes the earthquake was caused by a group of 10 tourists who stripped naked on the mountain a few weeks ago.

Tan Sri Joseph Pairin said that the earthquake was a “confirmation” that the mountain is sacred, and humanity “cannot take it lightly,” according to the Malay Mail Online.

Pairin said he had a feeling something bad was about to happen after he saw a flock of birds outside his home:

At first I didn’t think anything of it, but after it went on for more than half an hour I knew something was not well. I brought it up with my wife and we bought agreed that something bad was going to happen.

The next day, I was on the way to the airport when the earthquake occurred. To me, when something like this happens, it is a clear connection of the incident to the earthquake that has brought about so much damage and loss of lives.

There is almost certainly a connection. We have to take this as a reminder that local beliefs and customs are not to be disrespected.

Pairin said that he planned to bring charges against the five tourists in the group who authorities have identified for their actions on the mountain.

He said he wanted the perpetrators to be charged in accordance with local customs for their actions, according to The Malay Mail Online. The state’s police commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Hassan said that the group would face gross indecency charges.

Another local official Datuk Masidi Manjun told The Malay Mail Online that none of the identified suspects would be allowed to leave the country until their cases were resolved.

The incident on May 30 has caused outrage locally, with photos purporting to be of the group spreading throughout social media.

The incident on May 30 has caused outrage locally, with photos purporting to be of the group spreading throughout social media.

A Facebook page for the park posted some of the pictures, and also claimed to have posted a police report detailing the incident.

The alleged report says that ten foreign tourists stripped down while descending the mountain. It claims that when a person tried to rebuke them for doing so, the group told him he was “stupid and go to hell.”

Only five of the tourists were identified, according to the alleged report. Those five were identified as Canadians Lindsey and Danielle Peterson, Dutch citizens Dylan Thomas and Eleanor Hawrins, and German citizen Stephan Pohlner.

Malaysian authorities also identified Lindsey and Danielle Petersen as the two Canadians accused in the incident, according to The Canadian Press.

Lindsey Peterson, who is from Saskatchewan, posted frequently on social media about his travels with his sister through Asia. His last post was on May 26.

The siblings’ father, Floyd Peterson, told The Canadian Press that he had no idea his children were in trouble.

“Would you tell your parents you did this?” he said. “I don’t have anything to say, I’m just absorbing this.”

A Canadian Foreign Ministry spokesman told us the ministry is aware of the reports of Canadians being detained.

“Canadian consular officials in Malaysia are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information and are providing consular assistance to the Canadian citizens as required,” Nicolas Doire said.

Doire said the ministry could not comment further due to privacy restrictions.

The group could be charged as early as today, according to The Canadian Press.

This is rubbish. All sane people know that it is gay people that cause earthquakes. (So the imams tell us)

This is how superstitions and religions came to be. Something bad happens. Someone claims to have the inside track on god’s will and links it to something he didn’t like. It sounds backwards and stupid, but a lot of Americans hold Christian religious views built on the same logic.

I strongly suspect that not many people actually think they caused, but that they behaved really really badly and should have the fear of god put into them for being such wankers. what the hell do they think will happen- you go abroad, are told specifically NOT to do something, then do it anyway, how rude is that?
