Has NASA Been Lying To Us? 15 Reasons They Might Be

As long as we have walked the planet, we’ve been fascinated by space. Throughout history, we’ve spent a huge amount of time trying to figure out what we’re actually looking at when we look at the night sky. and thanks to organizations like NASA, we’ve found out quite a lot…or have we? Many people believe that NASA not only hasn’t taught us anything but that they’ve been lying ever since they were founded. The vast majority of people out there don’t believe this for a second. After all, what reason would NASA have to lie about space and the Earth? Believe it or not, many people believe that NASA has every reason to lie and that we’re sheep for having bought into it.

Here, we’re going to explore some of the biggest things NASA has told us that people believe to be lies. Some of these events might have occurred a bit before our time, while others are ongoing things that affect us every day. Still, others are milestone events in history that everyone knows about. While there are some things NASA says or does that make even the most rational people raise an eyebrow or two, other things are rightfully called baseless conspiracy theories. These claims by NASA might all be true (and science as we know it dictates that they are), but many people find that something’s fishy about them. Here’s what you need to know.

15. The Moon Landing

Ever since we were kids, we’ve been fascinated by the moon and Neil Armstrong stepping onto its surface. However, conspiracy theorists believe that that first moon landing wasn’t real and that NASA purposefully misled us to think that it was. Among other things, they think that the moon landing was actually done on a set on Earth, and the lowered gravity of the moon was simulated by wires. This is actually a common belief too: 6%-20% of Americans believe that the moon landing was faked. The television network Fox even aired a documentary on the subject entitled Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon? According to them, NASA faked the moon landing so America could win the space race. This theory has been thoroughly debunked thanks to photos of the moon capturing the landing sites and even the tracks left by the astronauts. That would be impossible to see unless someone had actually been on the moon.

14. All The New Planets

Even the most rational, science-minded people have a hard time getting behind the idea of NASA discovering all sorts of new, uninhabitable planets. For example, news broke not too long ago about a batch of Earth-sized planets, three of which might actually be able to support life. “This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.” These planets, called the TRAPPIST-1 planets, might be a good way to find out more about what makes planets inhabitable and what doesn’t. However, some people believe that discoveries like these are just works of fiction.

13. Flat-Earthers

While it’s been established for centuries that the Earth is round, there’s a vocal minority that believes that Galileo was wrong. According to the flat earth theory, what we think is a sphere is actually a flat, circular disk, making Antartica a thin ice border around the circle rather than a small island at the bottom of the sphere. Day and night work differently under this theory, as does gravity. According to these people, NASA has been faking the whole “spherical Earth” thing, and that all photos of the globe are photoshopped for some unknown financial gain. “In a nutshell, it would logically cost much less to fake a space program than to actually have one, so those in on the Conspiracy profit from the funding NASA and other space agencies receive from the government,” the flat-earther website’s FAQ page explains.

12. The International Space Station

Some conspiracy theories involve the International Space Station. The Sun got into it, exploring the mysterious video stream outages that have happened over the last few months. The first time was in July 2016, when a bright spot that looked a little like a spacecraft was seen hurtling towards Earth. Renowned UFOlogist Streetcap1 commented: “NASA cut the camera feed so quickly even though this was very distant.” It happened again at the beginning of 2017. Tyler, a Secure Team spokesperson, said: “We not only see a UFO fly overhead but we are also going to see the astronaut attempt to hide this activity by putting his hand in front of the camera.” NASA hasn’t said anything about it, but it hasn’t stopped people from theorizing that the International Space Station is cutting off the feed at specific times to avoid showing the world that aliens are out there.

11. Climate Change

Many people, even those in the highest positions of power, believe that climate change is a hoax. While many international organizations, including NASA, have published real, concrete evidence of climate change, it hasn’t stopped a group of people from believing otherwise, and that group grows every day. They believe that people are only pushing the idea of global warming because they want a weaker economy. We’ve been coming across this more and more since the current American president took a big stand against the idea of climate change and said that it was a hoax several dozen times on his social media accounts, where he has a huge following. Despite that, 97% of climate scientists say that it’s real, and most scientific organizations and even major businesses have taken a stand to combat it.

10. The Sun

Many people believe that the Sun doesn’t work the way we think it does. Some people believe this because of the flat-earth theory, while others believe it because they think there’s no way NASA can understand how the sun actually works. This theory gets into the different ways conspiracy theorists believe that the Sun is actually much closer and smaller than NASA tells us it is.

“We’ve been told all our lives that the sun is 92.96 million miles away with a circumference of 2,713,406 miles. We are told millions of Earths could fit inside the sun, and that our sun is just a close star that we orbit around. But if you look closely and observe the Sun’s light and rays, you will see that our reality is much different than what we’ve been told. We have been indoctrinated into a massive lie. All you have to do is look and see the truth with your eyes.” the article says.

Another source believes that it’s impossible for us to take anything about the Sun as actual fact. “Clear photographs of the sun used in textbooks are always produced with modern telescopes, containing the necessary devices used to view (read: fabricate) the sun properly. The telescope manufacturers along with the organizations which use the telescopes, those very organizations which propagate the moon-hoax, have an interest in their being a sun, and so their evidence cannot be accepted as authentic.”

9. Measurements

A lot of people think that it’s a pretty big coincidence that the sun and the moon appear the exact same size in the sky. One conspiracy blog broke down their reasoning, saying that if the sun and the moon are the same sizes, the earth would be consumed by the sun in about three billion years. According to Revisionism, our idea of what goes on in space is constantly being rewritten, so we have no idea what’s true and what isn’t.

“Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomological establishment’s big hero, later argued that the earth revolves around the sun. Needless to say, Copernicus’ ideas have also been substantially revised by modern science, which describes in vivid detail how the sun too and its solar system traipse about the universe. New models of the universe, however, are also constantly being conjured, and it seems as if the subject of dispute, the sun, hangs in even more suspect environs.” They believe that there’s no way that the sun and the moon could be the same size in the sky and not be the same distance away from the Earth.

8. The Earth’s Rotation

Some conspiracy theorists believe that there’s no way that the Earth is moving as fast as science says it is. A 2013 blog post purported to present evidence on this.

“Before Copernican heliocentric indoctrination, any child will look up at the sky and notice that the sun, moon, and stars all revolve around a stationary Earth. All empirical evidence from our perspective clearly shows that we are fixed and everything rotates around us. We feel motionless and experience the sun, moon, stars, and planets spinning around us. To suspend this common sense geocentric perspective and assume that it’s actually the Earth revolving beneath us daily while rotating around the sun yearly is quite a theoretical leap.”

The thing they’re not getting is that just because we experience something in a certain way doesn’t mean that we have the perspective to see what’s actually happening. We might not feel the earth moving under our feet, but that doesn’t stop the heliocentric theory from being true.

7. Freemasons And NASA

Some people believe that NASA has ties to the Freemasons. According to some people, Freemasons have been influencing NASA since the inception of the agency. Buzz Aldrin has ties to the Freemasons, as do Edgar Mitchell of Apollo 14 and Don Eisele of Apollo 7. James Irwin, the most recent man on the moon, also has ties to the Freemasons.

“The amount of astronauts known to be Freemasons or from Freemasonic families is astonishing. It is likely that more astronauts and people of key importance in NASA are affiliated with the Brotherhood as well, but not so open about their membership. For there to be this many Masons, members of the world’s largest and oldest secret society, involved in the promotion and propagation of this globalist heliocentric doctrine from its outset to today should raise some serious suspicion!” says one conspiracy site.

They even go so far as to say the common symbols for NASA are tied into the Freemasons. For example, the United States is represented by the eagle, and the eagle is a Freemason symbol. Guess which country was first on the moon?

6. The Challenger

Some conspiracy theorists even have something to say about tragedies like what happened to the Challenger. On January 28th, 1986, the NASA Space Shuttle orbiter Challenger (OV-099) (mission STS-51-L) broke apart a minute into its flight, leading to the deaths of seven crew members (five astronauts and two payload specialists). Nearly a fifth of all Americans were watching as they died, and 85% of Americans had heard of the accident within the hour. However, according to some theorists, those people never died. They were tracked down living new lives, even using their names and not aliases to protect the conspiracy. The people on the Columbia accident from February 1st, 2003 were also tracked down, and the people who supposedly died on that flight were found as well.

5. Spacewalking

In space, everything is constantly moving. The ISS travels at something like 17,000 miles an hour in space, taking about an hour and a half to rotate the earth, doing it 15 and a half times in a given day. That means that when astronauts in space are going on untethered spacewalks, they’re doing it in those conditions without any issues caused by that level of speed. At the speeds we’re talking about, tiny objects could literally rip right through a person.

Their theory on this is strengthened by the photos of people doing untethered spacewalks with the Earth looking totally flat behind them. This article gets into the theory behind this in more detail, which is a good thing because a lot of this involves math and measurements being taken wildly out of context. The reason people can spacewalk untethered out there is that the ISS and the astronaut are moving at the same speed. The reason why the earth looks flat in the camera’s view is that we only see a tiny bit of the earth’s surface, which hides the curve from us. Just because we can’t see something doesn’t mean it’s not there.

4. Splashdown

For those who don’t know what splashdown is, it’s when the nose cone on a rocket reenters Earth’s atmosphere with the help of three parachutes to make sure the astronauts inside don’t get hurt when they land. Many conspiracy theorists believe that a successful splashdown would be totally impossible because there are just too many variables.

The impact on the ocean would be hard enough to kill, and there’s always the possibility that parachute lines could get tangled or that the parachute might not open at all. On top of that, the nose cones on spaceships are too small to fit several astronauts and three huge parachutes complete with hundreds of feet of rope. This is putting aside all the life support equipment they’d need to bring back for the ride home. There’s even a rumor that Navy Intelligence expert Bill Cooper spoke about this and was killed for his trouble.

3. The Deaths Of Apollo Astronauts

A lot of people believe that the deaths of Apollo astronauts are mired in a huge conspiracy. One of the people who died in the Apollo 1 fire was Virgil “Gus” Grissom, the man who everyone thought would be the first on the moon. However, he was a critic of the program. Among his last words was a simple question that might have made him a target: “How are we going to get to the moon when we can’t communicate between two buildings?” Moments later, he was stuck inside a burning capsule with a few other astronauts. Even today, his widow and son maintain that he was killed on purpose. Even the investigation revealed that the Apollo program was kind of a mess, enough to jeopardize the US winning the race to the moon. Thomas Ronald Baron, an Apollo 1 safety inspector, testified for Congress saying that, and a week later, his car was struck by an oncoming train, killing him, his wife and his stepdaughter.

2. The Lunar Rover

Lunar rovers are awesome, but according to certain conspiracies, they might be fake. They’re lightweight, so much so that they’d break if someone sat in one on Earth. However, momentum on Earth and momentum on the moon is still momentum, so it doesn’t make sense that you’d be able to jump on one on the moon and be fine. On top of that, the rovers only ran on 1hp, making them remarkably underpowered, especially for a 1,500-pound vehicle. They’re not balanced well, either, making them really hard to drive…except all footage shows that astronauts weren’t too unencumbered by these problems. These were only a few problems with them, too. The issues with the lunar rovers might even be big enough to fly in the face of physics as we know it, even taking the reduced gravity of the moon into consideration.

1. The Missing Day In Time

One of the most famous Bible stories out there has to do with the missing day in time. That’s when Joshua called on God to help him during a battle and God made the sun stand still. “Joshua was concerned because he was surrounded by the enemy and if darkness fell they would overpower them. So Joshua asked the Lord to make the sun stand still! That’s right — “The sun stood still and the moon stayed — and hasted not to go down about a whole day! (Joshua 10:12-13).”

NASA debunked the theory, but many people still believe it. Evidently, scientists who support the theory actually did find a missing day, or rather, a missing 23 hours and 20 minutes. They just needed to find those last forty minutes, which could have shown up in other ways. They found it in a different part of the Bible: the time King Hezekiah asked for the sun to go ahead ten degrees and the shadows to go back ten degrees. Ten degrees accounts for about 40 minutes. It sounds insane, but for many people, this is gospel truth even if NASA refuses to acknowledge it.

Complete bullshit. Many statements made as facts are totally incorrect.
