Nine People Were Robbed By Criminals Luring Them Via Pokémon Go

As we’ve explained many times before, new technology will be the death of us all, be it hoverboards, self-driving cars, or Pokémon Go. While the new augmented reality game doesn’t pose any direct risk to humans, it’s clearly becoming a problem by leading them into less-than-ideal situations. For example, nine people have been robbed at gunpoint in the last few days by people using Pokémon Go as bait.

The O’Fallon Police Department in Missouri released a statement informing people that four men had been arrested at around 2 am on Sunday for armed robbery, and it is believed they were using Pokémon Go to lure unsuspecting players. From the statement:

The way we believe it was used is you can add a beacon to a pokestop to lure more players. Apparently they were using the app to locate ppl standing around in the middle of a parking lot or whatever other location they were in.

The O’Fallon Police department told Gizmodo that all four suspects are between the ages of 16 and 18 and they robbed eight or nine people over the course of the last few days.

I don’t really understand all the excitement around Pokémon Go, anyway. From what I understand, to really get the full benefit of the game you have to go outside and interact with other people. No thank you.

Stay safe. Never leave the house.
