A man is accused of breaking one of the Ten Commandments in a North Lauderdale church after deputies say he stole a purse from a woman who was deep in prayer.
On the Sunday before Christmas, the 84-year-old woman was in the chapel at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Roman Catholic Church with other worshippers when a man briefly sat in chairs behind her.
In video released by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, the man can be seen leaning over a row of chairs before he takes the woman’s Coach bag and runs away.
The woman pursues him outside the church at 1400 S. State Road 7, but he got away, the sheriff’s office said.
Two days later, the Coach bag was found in the church’s cemetery. The wallet, money and other valuables were missing, the agency said.
The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information to call Detective Alexander Briz at 954-722-5800 or Broward County Crime Stoppers, at 954-493-8477. The organization will also accept anonymous tips at http://www.browardcrimestoppers.org. A reward of up to $3,000 is available for information that leads to an arrest.
