People On Instagram Have Started Eating Chalk… So That’s A Thing Now

If you’ve spent any time online in the past couple of years, you’ve most likely come across this type of video without even realizing what it really is. The ASMR videos are trying to trigger an autonomous sensory meridian response, which is a tingly feeling that’s provoked by some sensory inputs or certain noises. These videos are extremely popular on Instagram, with over 5.4 million posts tagged with #ASMR, while on YouTube they are even more popular. There are people who eat in front of very sensitive microphones, the ones that cut up soap and people who play with slime.

The newest popular genre when it comes to ASMR videos is a trend where people are chewing, and sometimes even swallowing chalk. And according to some research, women tend to be the main perpetrators of this Instagram trend, with the hashtag #chalkeating being in the description of over 74,000 posts on Instagram, while the hashtag #chalkasmr has more than 36,000 posts on the same social media platform.

As any sensible person knows, chalk isn’t really made to be used and consumed in such a manner. Even though it’s not toxic, eating a lot of chalk means encountering at least some digestion issues, which range from abdominal pain and constipation to shortness of breath and coughing.

Thankfully, not everyone has caught on to the trend and made a video of their own, as some people are smarter than following the simple herd mentality. Although there is a medical condition which involves people craving materials that aren’t food, like paper, glue or even clay, for lengthy periods of time. This condition is called pica, and it’s an eating disorder triggered by either stress, nutrient deficiency, obsessive-compulsive disorder or pregnancy. And the people who are eating chalk for Instagram videos are claiming to be suffering from this condition. One Instagram user said that they started chewing chalk when they were only three years old, while another one says they only do it for the stress relief. And another user says that although these types of ASMR videos are very addicting and satisfying, actually eating the chalk is a terrible experience due to the taste and the texture of it. And of course, the possibility of injuring your teeth, during a time when dental work tends to have quite steep prices.
