The Picture That Proves Why You Should Always Cover Your Webcam

There have been many cyber warnings about covering your webcam.

Hackers have already targeted these tiny cameras which can then be used to spy on unsuspecting tech users.

Now a picture, posted on Facebook, may prove why everyone should cover up those web cams.

Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg has just released a snap of himself at the firm’s HQ and it appears he is a little paranoid about people keeping tabs on him.

The image shows the tech founder’s computer in the background and both the camera and headphone port appear to be covered with tape.

The 32-year-old multi-billionaire shared the photo to celebrate Instagram reaching 500 million monthly active users.

And thousands of eagle-eyed social media users were quick to spot the MacBook sitting on his desk with one Twitter user joking “tinfoil hat in the drawer.”

It is possible for sophisticated hackers to secretly take control of a laptop camera and quietly spy on the user, so it makes sense Mark Zuckerberg might be concerned about his privacy.

Former assistant director of the FBI, Marcus Thomas, previously revealed to the Washington Post that the FBI has long been able to activate a computer’s camera without triggering the indicator LED light to spy on users.

To take control of a person’s webcam, FBI agents must trick the target into infecting their machine with malware.

Once the software is installed, the FBI can take control of the webcam at any time.

Back in April, FBI Director James Comey revealed that he also places tape over his laptop webcam, because he saw “somebody smarter” use the technique.

“I saw something in the news, so I copied it. I put a piece of tape — I have obviously a laptop, personal laptop — I put a piece of tape over the camera,” he said during a Q&A session at Kenyon College.

“Because I saw somebody smarter than I am had a piece of tape over their camera.”

No person in the history of the world is more deserving of a righteous privacy hack.
