Sacha Baron Cohen Pays Fines For Guys Dressed In Borat Mankinis

Actor Sacha Baron Cohen has paid the fines dished out to a group of six guys who were arrested wearing Borat mankinis in Kazakhstan.

The group of lads had stopped to pose for photos in the capital city of the country where character Borat comes from.

On November 14, local media said the group of Czech tourists had been fined 22,500 tenge (£51; $67) each for their ‘indecent’ appearance.

On Facebook, Baron Cohen wrote:

To my Czech mates who were arrested. Send me your details and proof that it was you, and I’ll pay your fine.

He then included an email address which had been clearly created especially for the occasion – [email protected]

Baron Cohen received a Golden Globe award for the film but it also attracted controversy.

Kazakhstan actually banned the film and its following sales on DVD and authorities threatened to sue him.

However, the Kazakh foreign minister Yerzhan Kazykhanov publicly thanked the actor for ‘boosting tourism’ in the country in 2012, the BBC reported.

Kazykhanov said with the release of the film, the number of visas issued by Kazakhstan grew tenfold.

He added:

I am grateful to ‘Borat’ for helping attract tourists to Kazakhstan.

It is hard to believe it’s been eleven years since the film was released which saw Borat’s bizarre behaviour and dramatic stunts cause great commotion among unsuspecting Americans.

It turns out that while convincingly entering into the character of Borat, Cohen actually attracted unwanted attention from the FBI, he revealed when speaking to WTF with Marc Maron.

He said:

[The FBI] got so many complaints there was a terrorist travelling in an ice cream van… that they started compiling a little file on us and eventually they came to visit us at the hotel.

I obviously went missing when I heard because they were like ‘FBI’s downstairs’.

The actor admitted he actually had to hire a man to protect him, the crew and even his wife, Isla Fisher, after Kansas police said they’d arrest him if he carried on with his antics.

Who’d have thought a comedy film could have caused so much drama?
