Satanists In Fetish Gear Stage Counter-Protest To Anti-Choice Demonstration

As the #ProtestPP movement shook its fists at women’s health clinics around the nation Saturday to express their disapproval of legal abortion, the dependably hilarious Satanic Temple of Detroit staged a colorful counter-protest in favor of a woman’s right to choose.

As has been breathlessly reported by numerous conservative news outlets, some Satanists crashed a protest outside the Detroit branch of Planned Parenthood, where people seeking to impose their religious views on others were spreading false information like “Planned Parenthood sells baby parts.” Clad in baby heads, fetish gear, and other sacrilegious apparel, the counter-protesters writhed around, whipped each other, and brandished their milk bottles. A “priest” worshipped a “baby” that had been painted gold. Some people held up signs saying “”your fetish is not my command” and “no more lives sacrificed to fetal idolatry.” A similar counter-protest went down in Ferndale, Michigan.

In a press release, the Satanic Temple explained they intended to satirically expose the way the anti-choice movement uses misinformation and grotesque imagery in an attempt to impose their religious beliefs on others:

The action was intended to expose fetal idolatry and the perpetuation of fictional, coercive propaganda against the reproductive health organization [Planned Parenthood]. The Satanic Temple (TST) believes that the anti-choice movement’s obsession with, and mischaracterization of the fetus obscures medical reality and a woman’s constitutional right to choice. Enlarged images of fetuses which are no larger than an inch and the personalization of mindless, senseless human embryos elevates the fetus to the status of a demigod. The Satanic organization believes that all people are entitled to make informed decisions about their health, family and future without coercion. The philosophical and religious opinions of some should not be used legislate morality. The attempt to do so violates American foundational values of freedom and liberty.

The Temple employs grotesque, fetishized visuals to draw parallels to the approach of the anti-choice movement with a focus on bodies, eroticism and powerful imagery as a tool to communicate complex ideas.

That’s right: Those freak-a-leeks are standing up for good, old fashioned American values.

In addition to staging these types of actions, the Satanic Temple is involved in efforts to protect women’s reproductive rights around the country, “including a current state and federal lawsuit over Missouri’s mandatory 72-hour pre-abortion waiting period.” Go here to learn more about those, and here to donate to Planned Parenthood.
