Space Elevator – Science Fiction or the Future of Mankind?

So. Space elevators. Are they are thing that we should talk about?  Are they the next step in space exploration?

Good luck with the electrostatic discharge. A space elevator counterweight rises through various plasma fields. The only materials potentially strong enough for the tether are electrically conductive. Even short tethers burn from the super high voltage and currents generated by ESD. TL;DR: Zap, pow, “OH, THE HUMANITY!!!”

This idea may work, but only if the the world is flat…

Seeing as ODO has brought this up again, I’m trying to do the physics in my head.

Things in orbit stay in orbit unless they are subject to drag, then the orbit decays. Surely the drag of the tether will cause orbital decay? Someone please explain this to me because I am too lazy to do an internet search.
