STARBUCKS STRIKES AGAIN – DENIES BATHROOM TO BLACK MAN WHILE ALLOWING A WHITE MAN

In a ridiculously blatant show of racism, a Los Angeles Starbucks gave the bathroom code to a white guy (who hadn’t yet made a purchase) but not to a black guy (who also hadn’t yet made a purchase). The black man, Brandon Ward, recorded the whole thing on his phone so he’d have proof, and activist Shaun King tweeted out the video and the story.

After being denied the code to the bathroom, Ward started recording. The man who came out of the bathroom, a young white guy named Weston, explains that he got into the bathroom when the people at the register gave him the code. He hadn’t even made a purchase yet, either.

So Ward walked up to the service counter, recording all the while, and politely tried to ask why Weston was given the code when he wasn’t. He mentioned that he thinks it might have something to do with the color of his skin. Seems like a pretty fair guess.

The woman who identified herself as the manager of the Starbucks repeatedly told Ward that he wasn’t allowed to film in Starbucks, but he had already made his point and got the footage needed to show, very clearly, that the Starbucks employee(s) chose to give the bathroom code to one man and not another, the only difference between the men being race.

People sounded off in the responses to the tweet.

Some people pointed out how awful the manager was at dealing with the situation (all she kept saying was that Ward wasn’t allowed to film).

One person said she was becoming uncomfortable patronizing Starbucks given that they didn’t seem like much of a progressive company at all. Someone else pointed out that, sadly, this happens in establishments all over the country.

Some people called for a boycott of Starbucks. This certainly isn’t the first time they’ve behaved in a racist way — recently two black men were actually arrested for waiting for a friend without ordering anything in a Philadelphia Starbucks. (Starbucks issued an apology for that.)
